people didn't like this movie because it contradicted the tv show
remember the episode with the indians? and the ba'ku were a lot more unreasonable than them. you have to remember that there were millions dying in the war with the dominion and this planet could've acted as a resting place.
For me, the joystick moment along with Riker's "We're through running from these bastards" were just laugh-out-loud dumb. HOWEVER, good music (as always), good scenery, and we get to see Patrick Stewart kicking ass. Story was a bit weak, but what you gonna do. . .
Seen the rebooted Star Trek, still prefer the original Star Trek's though. I really think they could easily do a series in the original universe, set it a bit further in the future. As it'd be unlikely to have any original crews, just bring back characters from the past, like as was done in Voyager and Ds9. Go back to its roots, they would likely be exploring beyond the alpha quadrant now, huge premise for stories. Shorter seasons, bigger budget per episode, especially for music just like this.
I love how the beautiful Ba'ku theme in the middle completely sucks you in, almost to the point where you forget you're listening to a Star Trek score. But then the classic march kicks back in and you're like- OH YEAH! Then you rock out.
Of all the TNG movies they did, Insurrection was probably my favorite. I liked it even more than I liked First Contact though both were great. I cannot express in words how utterly disappointed I was when they made that piece of crap Nemisis after this. After Picard lost his family in Generation they had a perfect set up for him and Anij to start one of their own. So damn disgraceful that they did things the way they did.
I love next generation and every crewmember, all these movies were fantastic, and the music was even better. I had a gripe or two here and there but all the movies were really good.
THis and generations weren't that bad at all. I wouldn't consider them the best of all the movies but it wasn't bad. Movie wise bad, but if you like Star Trek, especially TNG then you should like the movie.
@SchwarzeWitwe2 I respectfully disagree with you about number 5. It may be the weakest of the franchise, but it's still a pretty good movie, the special effects suffered yes, actually they sucked, the previous movies had better, and of course the later ones did, but the relationships within the crew and the theme of the story were very good.
@NevadaWrangler Insurrection was pretty good because it was about protecting a small group of people who couldn't defend themselves. Which is what the military is for. The wonder of this unique little world and it's miracles also made it the most 'Trek'-like of the TNG films. Gene Roddenbery would've like it I think.
@NevadaWrangler Star Trek V: The Final Frontier sucked not only because of effects It sucked for reasons such as the fact that Shatner's big ego got in the way when he directed it, the writers' strike that severely cut preproduction as well as thin out the script. Paramount's insistence for a light hearted movie, the poor attempts on adding comedy in what should have been a mainly dramatic film to begin with and perhaps most importantly, the fact that Spock has a so called half brother in Sybok.
I remember the disappointment I felt seeing Star Trek V The Final Frontier at the cinema. When I saw the shuttle docking sequence I thought damn - these effects suck. It was downhill from then on. In fact I refuse to accept that Final Frontier is in the franchise as it looks just too cheap and cobbled together. Listen out for the James Brown sound effect when Kirk fights that cat creature.

I do love the music, was very different to any of the other movies, very relaxing, and deffinately had some worth while parts with a very strong morale if you thought about it, fav line: - "how many does it take? 10? 100? 1,000,000? well? HOW MANY DOES IT TAKE ADMIRAL??"
That line was dumb, I agreed completely with Starfleet Command and Picard had previously assisted in moving a people off a planet forcefully in a season 7 episode.
@80smusicfanNO1 I think i know the one you're talking about. As I recall it was either that or go to war with Cardassia. They claimed the planet, not us. That's quite a different situation.

I know that it isn't the most flashy, but for me Insurrection ranks among my favorites, if not exclusively, among the Trek films. The setting is beautiful, the music is serene, and the message is true to Star Trek; relevant and powerful. Overall, I appreciate all ten of the ST films. #11 I enjoyed when I saw it in the theater, but I will confess that I was blinded to some of the things which I dislike about it in retrospection at the time by the joy of seeing Trek back on the big screen.
I never understood why Insurrection had bad reviews. Sure there were silly moments, and my first impression seemed too series-like for the big screen, BUT! I still liked the movie. Good music, good humour, good story. I especially loved the beautiful scenery! (obviously to compete with Lord of the Rings release at the time). This film started to imply that the cast is getting old, and we were going back to younger times.
P.S. That joystick Riker uses - its a Logitech joystick and I own one!
your a bit early for lotr. this came out in 1998, but i do agree with you. but it's not just the critics how don't like it. Jonathon Frakes, the director, doesn't like it that much. He blames a poor script.
I'm a trekkie and i dont think Insurrection was a great film. It would of been a brilliant 2 part episode in the series because you are right it is a good trek story but it simply did not translate well to the big screen IMO.
