Our whole fucking government is messed up I mean you need to wear a seatbelt or you'll go flying out the fucking window but 8 years old really and you have to be 13 to ride in the front I mean I understand small children need to ride in a carseat but this is breeding a whole fucking generation of pussies
Wow if I have kids I think I would sell my car and use public transportation where there is no child safty seat laws. I can't afford both gas and booster seats for 8 years. (Screw you spical interst groups; your plan backfired in your attemp to make people buy your stuff in my case.) Seriously I think the real problem is that adult seat belts are designed for giants and they should just make devices to lower the seat belt required. I am sick of seat belts digging into my neck and I am 5ft tall.
A backless booster seat will set you back $30 and last 6-8 years depending on expiration dates, that is roughly $5 per year. You can buy a Graco Nautilus for $120, which a child can use from the time they no longer fit rearfacing until they no longer need a car seat.
I agree! My kids(7 and 10) ride in booster seats and they buckle and unbuckle themselves. It's not any different unloading or loading them then it would be w/o the seats.
I once thought that I would not be able to afford a HWH seat for my children, but then I looked at the amount of money I was spending on...say...the internet. Two Graco Nautilus seats will set me back $300. That's two months without cable, internet, or eating out. I did it. My child's life? Priceless.
Well, technically she might be better off in a booster since the seat belts are made for taller people, but there aren't any available for her weight (unless she's light). Anyway, I think car makers should make them more adjustable for shorter people.
there aren't a lot of options in 5 point harnesses for kids over 40 pounds and they are expensive. This is a PSA for a new law - how are they going to enforce a law saying 5 point harnesses for everyone under 4'9"? We aren't driving space shuttles here.
There are maybe 10 that have 5 point harnesses for children over 40 lbs. I think the cheapest of these is $150. Not easy to cough up that much cash, especially when I can get a decent booster for under $50.
My son will be four in 2 months and is about 3 pounds away from the 40 pound mark when I will have to stop using his current car seat. Also, both his and his sister's carseats are about to expire as I have had them since she was a baby (now 6). I have had her in a booster seat for 2 years. So, if I replace both seats, plus the ones in our other car (same scenario) with the cheapest 5 point harness, I am looking at $600 in carseats. I personally can't afford that.
For the average family, $600 is a lot of money. Which is better for my kids' well-being - Buying groceries and paying my electric bill or having the 5 point harness? IF you can afford it, it is a better option. But making it a law? Not nice to do to poor people. I spent 3 hours last night researching the options and it's really daunting when you look at your pocketbook, hear all the guilt trips, then see the options.
My kids would be safer if I put them in moonsuits and strapped them into space shuttle seats, if I never let them breathe the dirty city air and never let them play outside. But I don't think it's fair to parents who are making the best decisions they can to say that my kids are UNsafe in a federally approved, crash-tested booster seat. In fact, they are much safer than kids were even five years ago. They are safer than most kids in most parts of the world. They are pretty damn safe.
The law is not requiring all children under 4 ft 9 to be in a harnessed seat, it is requiring them to be in a BOOSTER seat. Booster seats can be purchased for as little as 10.00.

I do not disagree with keeping children safe with booster seats, it's common sense.
However, government believes parents are incompetent (indeed some are) but proceeds to punish and insult everyone who isn't.
All the while forgetting that it's not the government's job to micromanage and tell "free" individuals how to live and conduct their "free" lives.
This is the tip of the iceberg if Government manages healthcare. They will then have an invested interest in health micromanagement.

Booster seats are cheap. If you can't afford one, you can't afford kids.

I purchased backless booster seats for my 2 kids for 10.00 each! 10.00 is a small price to pay for safety.

in michigan, all poeple shorter than 4'9 and under the age of 16 have to be in a booster seat.
yes, can you imagain a mom driving her 4'8 daughter to school, where she has to help her daughter out of her booster seat.
i would almost rather get hit

You don't have to help a child that size get out of her seat unless she has special needs.

The most likely way that a child will die in the U.S. is a car accident. Why do you care if other people want to keep their kids safe?
motherindie 3 years ago
Agreed that a child in any child seat is safer now than a long time ago. But the idea is to get the message out that your kids can be safer.
Have you seen the Kyle Miller video if not check it out.
