nice find man, I'm at Scott AFB in IL and we have a bunch of garters that hang out by our work. they stay under the sidewalk and live in the rodent burrows, and are coming out all day when it's sunny the last couple weeks. We also saw a Prairie kingsnake in the same area that sneaked away from me and went under the concrete also.... probably looking for a garter snake meal.

But man, yeah, garter musk is the worst. I have no desire to hold them anymore!

Actually, Garter Snakes ARE poisonous, but there's no way they can kill you. Their poison is very weak, but they have some!

first its venomous second don't worry they are one of the most harmless snakes you can find and yes all snakes will bite if they feel truly threatened sorry if someone already answered your question

the same thing happened to me..my cat was chasing something and i went to see what it was and it was a baby snake then later my dog was barking at the window and it was i think it was about 4 baby snakes and i live it the city so i dont get to see snakes that much then i took them to a forest

You mean like at night?

Yes actually, as summer gets hotter snakes become more nocturnal. In fact most of the stuff I find during the hotter months is at night.

Although, I am not sure how well this applies to Canada. It may not get hot enough there to see this phenomenon.

hello, dear friend. you have very good heart. I have a question. two days ago I found a garter snake. I thought he was gettin sun, I touched him, but he did not move. I don't see any harm on his body, but he is motionless. What is going on? How do I know if he is alive or dead? I worry for him.

I live in Ma, and havn't seen a Garter in ages. I believe the reason to be the large population of coyotes, also hawkes take quite a few of them. Used to find ample numbers of them everywhere in the backyard.

I have seen the red-sided before though. That is a Missouri species and I spend most of my time in Illinois.

There are some places I am planning on going to in MO so maybe Ill see some.
