Yes, wind can be pretty aweful and scary. I took a short self-supported tour this summer and I think that the winds were only a bit better than the hills in Kentucky and Southern Illinois. Did you took the central US route?
It depends on which of the 30 of us you ask...haha. I think most people would agree that whenever there was a lot of wind (much of Illinois, Missouri and Kansas, as well as the eastern part of Colorado...and one really hot, awful, extremely windy day in Idaho). Also, going over the Blue Ridge Mountains in WV lead to a pretty rough day. Trail Ridge in Rocky Mountain NP? Not too bad...who knew?
