magnus only lost cuz he was told tomorow youre gona play an amish girl, he figured she must suck, she doesnt even have electricity! so he went out drinking and was hung over, next time hell be prepared
High hopes for Giri! But the fact is: This was a milestone in his career, and for Carlsen a day where he blundered against a weaker opponent. Hope thy meet many more times down the road when Giri is more experienced with a strength around 2800+. These players could be the next "Kasparov/Karpov"-like rivals at the top.
Yes I agree with Luckystrke Giri comments very well and speeks more than Carlsen do, but I`m suru Magnus do so because he doesn`t want to explain too much variation for his potential opponents and give them know how he analises, his psyhology etc.
Just out of curiosity ... As a 1600 player looking on at much smarter players, can someone help me see why at 12:12 f2xe3 is a bad move? i'm guessing nc4, and although it gains advantage i don't see the game winning line... thanks for the help.
Love Giri's analysis! Fast paced, multi-faceted, and to the point! Too many players like Topalov just stare at the board, mumble one or two variations, and leave. With Giri, I have to actually concentrate and rewind to understand what he's saying! Bravo!
@ chessfan 6: Also Kasparov is the best of all time ( I reject being diplomatically where this is concerned). He has been beaten on several occassions. But it doesnt take away from the fact that taking all things into consideration that he was still the best!
@ chessfan 6: Waht renumeratedfrog was saying is that he would have had it harder if Carlsen had played is usual best. And let's not pretend we don't know what Carsen's best is! Cause frankly speaking you don't become world's number one by blundering a whole lot! So objectively speaking Giri took advantage of Carlsen's mistake, congrats very good. BUT Carlsen is still Carlsen. Carlsen still finished above Giri anyway! Don't get me wrong I really like Giri but one must speak objectively!
@ Blindfoldpoet cont'd: Say for example that Nakamura is more expressive and better at communicating than Giri and it turns out that Nakamura is a serial killer does it mean that Nakamura is still a better role model because his rating is higher and he speaks better English? All I'm saying is that u can't base the fact that Giri speaks English better than Carlsen as a reason for him being a better role model whether or not English is Giri's first language or not!
@ Blindfoldpoet: I am not in total disagreement with you! Anish Giri very fantastic guy, wish him all the best, he's a prodigy etc, acknowledged, but. Anish speaks better English than Carlsen doesn't mean he's a better role model doesn't mean Carlsen is better either. All it means is that Giri knows better English. You could argue that he makes for better English role model maybe. But saying he's a better role model just b/c he speaks better is not good reasoning my friend it's "blind" reasoning
The sound quality of the vieo is very poor. More importantly though, to say Carlsen is number one b/c his opponents blunder all the time is totally unreasonble a statement. He must be Irish and not Norwegian then! With fun and joke aside though, Anish beat Carlsen this time round doesnt mean one should be all sensational and over dramatic. Also b/c Giri speaks better English than Carlsen doesnt mean he is a better role model, English isnt is first language!
English is also not Anish' first language. Yet he can speak it pretty well considering he also speaks Russian and Dutch. And of course its fun that the world number one loses to someone a couple years younger.
@eyeyey14 i think he'd rather be a better player than Magnus than 'role model' - but why dya need a role model anyway? Are you so dissatified w/ yrself that you must take yr cue from others?
it is a common problem when one does not have a chess set at home.Too much of a mouse at home is bad.better to balance computer use and feel the pieces with your fingers
@renumeratedfrog what?? that makes no sense. That's like saying in boxing a fighter only won because his opponent was off balance for a second and got knocked out. It's Carlsen's own fault he blundered.
If on the other hand Giri won on time in a completely drawn position, you may have a case.
OMG I love it when Carlsen loses!

Great game Anish. Left him hanging - literally. A BIG WIN!
mrhowardvalencia 1 year ago
dosen`t matter. Carlsen will win the tournament anyways, He crushed Nakamura in todays session, total dominance
Carlsen usually start tournaments not so very good, but eventually his game improves and he starts winning, only 0.5 behind Anand now
He`s got 3 win out of 4 last matches now, he`s got not so difficult fixtures left, only Kramnik on Friday

A sensational win and what a pity it was hardly featured in the dutch news.

If with sensational you're referring to the out of character blunder, then yes it was.
Anish is indeed very well spoken, and his respect for Magnus is quite evident.

He only won because Carlsen blundered... That's not a good win.

@renumeratedfrog If it wasn't for his opponents making blunders Carlsen would not have anywhere near the rating he has today.
There is no player currently playing who has been the beneficiary of blunders more than Carlsen.
hchoudh1 1 year ago
@renumeratedfrog and why do you think that is ..., maybe because his game is extremly complex and suboptimal
