That was a well known incident for 737 flyers. Reason for this failure: a mechanic stored some wheel chocks inside main wheel well. During flight they were disturbed by turbulence and became trapped between the wheels, locking the left gear in that position. Lesson learned: despite being convenient, wheel well is not a locker...

But a very diligent crew member could discover that a jamming chock was there thru the Ldg Gear scope and shake the plane, perhaps, in order to dislodge it and be able to release the landing gear again. taking flying lessons one day and the wheel strut feel off left side of the plane. we flew around airport for over an hour to burn the fuel. by that time all the local news media were there. the instructor was an old pro and he kept that left wing up in the air long as possible before we landed. lots of sparks, crunching and prop bending and about a ten on the sphincter factor but we landed okay! this video reminds me of that day. looks like a malfunction and the pilot did a great job.

the gear is not up to be exact because there is only 1 lever which opens/closes the gear... so the front wheel gear and one rear wheel gear must have malfunctioned due to technical difficulties.

The fact that he puts the plane down right gear first is all you can do, as soon as you slow down just a bit the left wing will drop. And in case you didn't noticed the plane didn't go up in flames. This is actually a quite famous landing attempt. On the first pass the crew knew only one gear was down. The pilot on the first pass was actually trying to hit the ground hard enough to cause the stuck gear to come down and still not crash. The gear did not come down but the pilot displayed superb flying skills. No one was injured in the subsequent controlled crash landing. Brilliant piloting skills

@Kennymac8251 Exactly right!!! I don't know why so many aircraft that have a stuck gear don't try to bump the asphalt and do a go-around even a couple times to try and get it to extend. If he was able to get it unstuck he would have saved the day and a lot of damage. Too bad... Great landing non the less, although I was kind of surprised how he just slammed the left wing down so hard and fast after touchdown. Seems like it might be better to keep it up and slow it down as much as possible first.

The engines would snap off when it dug into the grass/mud, which would rip the wings and break the plane apart. If you land on grass, you must have landing gear if possible, especially in a 737.

@lazyishardwork 2 gear landing is supposed to be conducted on Tarmac if possible. Quicker response from fire team, smoother surface, prone to less objects whereas in the grass there could be small trees, shrubs, etc which can be sucked up into the engine causing a fire. A 2 gear plane is much able than a single or no gear airplane. Its a safer bet to put this plane down onto a runway. I've taken training as a certified pilot, I retired a while ago. That is what we are told to do.

@nksharpshooter I saw this show and they actually have this cement that holds a lot of air bubbles so its tough but it crumbles away like foam...they have slabs laid out at the ends of runways in 30 or so airports and it is there for exactly what you said, in case the pilot overshoots the landing strip and cant stop the plane before the end of the runway. Should be law for every runway to have it!!
