It is so sad when the devil traps so many good and anointed singers and destroy thier lives. I use to love listen to this song as a teenager. RIP sister.
This was a great recording session @ the Wilshire Ebell Theatre the Voices of Conerstone were a great choir. Under the direction of Stanly Lee. His arrangements and expertise could not be understated or dismissed. Kudos to Stan.
Stumbling through, I found this song & after many, many years, I hear my dear, sweet cousin's voice (Penny Jones). Oh how I miss U & your fantastic voice - such range you had...R.I.P. I know you're singing to MY Momma up there...if it starts to get crowed, save a seat for me. LUV U BEYOND ETERNITY. Darryl
Loved to hear the late Charlotte "Penny" Jones sing. What a God gifted voice she was blessed with.
Not only on this song "Lifted Me" (as she shows her range) but on "A Praying Spirit, Forgive Them and from a song written by Keith Pringle entitled "Suffered, Bled and Died." It was a more beautiful song than any she has sung.
JZ777: Thanks for this post, again bringing back the good old memories of all the Sunday afternoon gospel musicals in Los Angeles, R.I.P., the late Penny Jones left us at such a young age, and what a voice!
Many thanks to Johnzoe777 for posting that absolutely stunning cut from back in the day. It is timeless, the music, the arrangement, the vocalizing stands up to anything produced today. Thank you for posting this gem. Be blessed! Your work is not in vain. It is a ministry.
You must remember while listening to this that there were very few people singing with this kind of stylization control and range at the time of this recording. I was a young teenager in los angeles when I heard Penny sing a year or so before her tragic death. (I won't give the details, but she got involved with the wrong crowd, drugs etc..) I remember watching her and listening in total ah, with my mouth wide open, the first time I heard her. She was amazing in person, an urban legend almost.
As I read the comments here, I wxperience emotions that I haven't felt in years. I sang with Penny and the Voices of Cornerstone. I listen to this song and her voice and just say thank God for the gift that was wrapped in Penelope Jones.
@Sheall323 - hey I was in the VoC @ this time. I even led a song on the first album, called Do You Know The Lord. The age range goes further than what you mentioned. I was 25 @ the time. Penny was older than 16 when we recorded this. I believe she was about 19 or 20. This was recorded in 1980.,,,,,
Penny's voice is like a creme brulee... that raspy crust with that rich, warm, decadent center. I've been trying to put my finger on it, but I think she sounds like a Gospel Lauryn Hill x 1,000, she really should have been a household name.
James R Smith Penny stood on that stage that night on crutches singing like that. You just HAD to be there to experience that night.

Yes Penny was older than 16. She was born in October 1958.
Yes. This recording was by the young adult choir of Rev Cleveland's church. We were very proud of the work on this recording session.

This was our young adult choir. They were about 13 years to 18. Maybe Penny was near 16 at this time.
