is their any other stretching technique to make your rubber gaurd more flexible other than the stretch where your like in a butterfly gaurd and push your knees to the floor if so can you send a vid please
@ditya97 do one leg at a time and put the other to your side and slightly behind you. lean forward onto your bent leg and feel the stretch in your hammies and knees...
I love eddie bravo and his approach to no-gi brazilian jiu jitsu!! There's a 10th planet place in rochester, but im hopin 10th planet will immigrate to Buffalo.
So is he saying its alright to have an overhook in lockdown? What is the gameplan then if you do? The stomp? Also the boa? Why does ohio have to be so far away from 10th planet :'( I make due with you Ari and the books. I haven't picked up the dvd yet.
Thanks for this. I get grief for not doing the underhooks. I ain't hot shit, and I am waaaaaay more comfortable with overhooks, especially against bigger and more experienced guys.
Too say he would get 'killed' in MMA is horribly wrong, because all he would need to do is take the person down, or even get on his back with them in his guard and they wouldnt know what to happen. Plus a guy with the BJJ skills like he has mounting you, I dont see it being a easy night.
Eddie doesn't train for mma so of course he'd have a tough time. Its like saying that you or I would get killed in pro football. MMA is just another type of sport. On the flip side, there are so many MMA guys that would get crushed in a jiu jitsu match and tap out with in 30 seconds against a guy like Eddie, Marcelo, Jeff Glover, Drysdale.
True That! I do Judo and when I roll with jiu-jitsu players or strike with Tae Kwon Do or Western Boxers, I get owned. However if we are standing and I get a hold of them, I can drop 'em. Different sports, different outcomes. I wouldn't do Aikido with Ari, he'd crush me (or break a wrist). Thanks for the Vid Subs 101. Keep on keepin on
true but jiu jitsu is a huge part of the winning formula in mma, and even some of those guys who you think have no jiu jitsu skills, actually have quite a bit.
eddie is pretty good bjj, he'd get crushed in mma though. any guy with a decent sprall would man handle him. He'd probably have to fight like 135, he'd get killed by everybody though. That's my opinion, still have massive respect for him bjj, he's a legend.
So, if I'm understanding Eddie correctly the overhook is used for transitioning from half-guard to guard, and the benefit is that the hand is already on the mat. Correct?
not that i know of but you've got some great schools in atl. Alliance founder Jacare is there not to mention Traven, Creighton and several Pedro Sauer affiiliates.
I've been thinking about this same thing a lot lately, ever since I tried out a triangle set up I saw BJ Penn use where he overhooked an arm to trap it to the mat (similar to the rubber guard, but without breaking the opponent down into mission control. It's a much more powerful tool than it's given credit for.
A Boa (as in Boa Constrictor) is when you have someone's back and rather than having your hooks in you have one leg across their stomach and your other leg clamping it down as you would in a triangle.
To be extra clear;
the foot of the leg across your opponents belly is at the back of the other legs bent knee.
Actually, you are talking about the ANACONDA BODY LOCK or the figure four body lock. The boa is a half guard sweep in the 10th Planet system that is murder on the ribs!!
lol Ari you ain't right homey. you can't put this up and not let me see the boa. I'm years behind the way 10thp is playing now. Please bring 10p to south Carolina.
Mater Ari, is it rubber guard suitable for tall guys? Im working at my flexibulity daily, and still a believer of rubber guard, but being tall goes with me or against me ??
Nope...long legs are great. I know a guy 6'5'' that plays the game no problem. Remember, not everything will work on all people and you should investigate and explore your options ;-)
There is a 10th Planet Rcchester New York with instructor Chris Herzog Of Empire Academy. Chris is the Shit and knows his stuff. I strongly suggest checking him out!
Yo thanks alot for the upload Submissions101...I always felt that the overhook was just as good as the underhook as far as the number of submissions, or techniques that you can go to from each position....I love using the overhook to open up flower sweeps from half guard, and also opening up areas to get to butterfly and so much more....This topic is very crucial to any No GI competitor who is trying to understand the basics of positioning...Keep up the good work, MUCH LOVE from DIESEL BJJ !!!
10th Planet is a NOGI style of jiu jitsu.Eddie is a Black Belt in BJJ and started on his own path and views of nogi. The system and set ups are different than BJJ but they share commonalities because 10thP comes from BJJ
