At least in this way, it would give the police force more than enough time to reach the girl (considering that the trap was not based on time limit). Even many police officers, who are trained for certain types of danger, would panic in such an unusual situation. Besides...while I agree with the gears, we couldn't see what he was shooting....he doesn't have to break the gears, just whatever is causing them to run? Also, whenever a character can think rationally, the movies kill the person off quickly >.< Which sucked.

Also, if he held her hair and pulled upwards from the spindle either her hair would've snapped, the spindle would've unwound or it would've given him enough time to think.
