Those who do not like Callas in this aria, need to look at the music and see that she follows every single marking of the composer... EVERY one and interprets this fabulously, with fabulous tone and sound.

@kgarmaker123 Sadly there people who just want to hear every soprano sing with a "pretty voice" add some trills, hit some top notes and that impresses them hugely. They don't see opera as musical drama where each character must be sang in a specific way (not only following the composer's notations -which are there as a guide) but also to convey the emotions, give meaning to every syllable, create the character, and bring it to life the way Callas did. They are missing a huge amount. Sad for them

I have heard at least fifty different interpretations of this aria, and I always return to Callas for the real thing. With some of the supposedly great versions, I often wonder whether the singer even understands what she's saying. With Callas every word and note is musical and expressive. At 3:12, the way Callas's voice explodes with emotion at "Alvaro io t'amo!" and then tapers into a hopeless silence at the end of "t'amo" says everything there is to know about Leonora.

La Tebaldi ha una voce stupenda, ma il pathos , il dramma e lo spleen nella voce della Callas sono inimitabili ed irrangiungibili. Come spesso accade lei non interpreta il personaggio, lei VIVE quel personaggio.

My Word !!! She was just amazing , she really blows you away. I just listened to Tebaldi and thought that's it ...no one could do this aria better. I was wrong Callas tops her on this one. So the Top 3 would be 1st Callas, 2nd Tebaldi 3rd Price what a trio they make. There can't possibly be any better. 5 stars and on my fav's.

I am, and the reason is simple.. To start with she executes the crescendo, decrescendo... which most sopranos cannot do, smooothly or in any way with any feeling.. Further her attention to the words and the text with absolutely the right rubato.. Along with gorgeous tone.. I am afraid there will be no one like her for a very very long time.
