@POORGEORGIE1 kevin spacey was in a different league to denzel. i think hes great but kev spacey as lester burnham is without doubt, one of the greatest character performances in a film in the history of the film industry. indeed, it is unfortunate for denzel as american beauty was probably the greatest film in the last 40 years in film history. the charcter he played was a masterclass in a 'one off' film that is unique and clearly loaded with meaning, depth, humour and reality.

Difference-maker here was Kevin gave very good performance in very good film while Denzel gave very good performance in film with several problems: 1) a hamfisted script that took absurd liberties with Carter's story, 2) Denzel at 44 was too old for boxing scenes (he was in great shape but just does not look or move like a fighter), 3) Norman Jewison was dependable director earlier in career, but by 1999 was in his mid-70's with fading skills (last good film he made was Moonstruck in 1987).
