Yes 3 people died during the making of the film but no he did not have a real zeppelin. They were either destroyed at war like this or had to be transferred out of German as War Reparations. But this footage is used a lot for Airship documentaries LOL

it is true, Howard Hughes bought 137 planes and a real zeplin for this film. the crashes and everything else for that matter really did happen. the pilots died during the filming of this movie.
great movie, the double explosion is really convincing.

Because they are crashing REAL planes into REAL zepplins. On the other hand... it's made by Howard Hughes.
So if Bill Gates are going into the movie industries, maybe he can afford NOT using CGI for special effects.
