  • @4Corry What would Yahoo have to do with this?

  • @blueengine123 interesting question, a tad complex to answer

when my son was very young he seemed to enjoy the chuggers TV show very much...BUT he never seemed to latch onto the toys

with Thomas he loved that little blue engine from day one, so much so it had me wondering what's the special power behind Thomas, and that's when I made my Action Thomas cross over

the way toys become favourites is difficult to actually pin point, it's in the lap of the train Gods

  • Piqjfavz

  • Now hosted, my apologies for the late uptake - work hours shifting around like nobody's business! Hope all is well Leo, this video does thrown up some interesting questions on characterization.

  • @simierski i have another Hornby set to review, it's the very strange codename strikeforce..lol

lets just say the box artwork sucked me in, and i'm curious to see if I have another crap controller in this set. It's also a excuse for me to do a big pyro show set around a model train set.

If I purchased the little industrial engine alone cost = $65 but a whole set including the same engine ( with war paint ) cost = $100

  • @simierski possibly you will see a scene like this

opps I blew up the controller, oh bad luck..!

When was the last time Hornby went to war as a theme to a set..?

  • @leokimvideo the saddest excuse for a charector is sidney sure if given the time he could be great but he appeared fot about 10 seconds

  • @thomasmodelseries wow, that is a flash in the pan character

  • you sure are right up until season 5 all the carectors had personalities and were featured in more then 1 episode the only exception being smudger but at least there is a good reason. i agree that in a couple years chuggington will probably be in the same proble thomas is in i mean thomas started really good but look at season 15 [by the way NEVER watch wonky whistle]

  • @thomasmodelseries the vibe I get from the Thomas community is the TV series which is produced today is very much HIT and miss ( sorry for the pun ), while the early episodes were all good as they were close to the source of the original railway series, in a way you could say we see not only character bloat but also character drift. And that's well established characters which seem to change over time.

  • @leokimvideo you are right about the new charectors it is very rare to find a new charector that has a good personality that stays den and dart were good in day of the disels but lost all personality in seson 15 but the again no charectors had much peronality in that season

  • @thomasmodelseries I think there is character overload going on, go back and look at the first few series, it was all classic stuff without character bloat

i do wonder if Chuggington will become a mass of characters in years to come

you know in the end it's all about selling toys, thats where the BIG dollars are

  • @leokimvideo that would be nice if boco came back and it would be pretty interesting to see d199 in the tv series for some reson i see him teaming up with diesel 10

  • I remember you saying that the buttons on the talking Chuggers stick in a previous video. It surely did stick on Harrison, haha. Interesting to see how 2 year olds respond to this plethora of characters from both series.

  • it is pretty cool that even though charectors like duck or donald and douglas have not been majorly included in a while kids still know who they are like once i saw a pre schooler i think in the hall way at school and he was telling his a teacher about trains and she was saying like is there a green one or something and when she said is there a black one he imideatly said donald and douglas i could not help but smile

  • @thomasmodelseries those early classic characters will always be classic, some of the new characters are real flash in the pan trains

i would like to see Boco make a comeback, and hey what about Diesel199

  • @leokimvideo i got mine a pack with a couple of rescue cars but i think i might have seen a narrow gauge pack also does it seem like your soon has least favorite train just another random question main i am filled with those. also your son and your daughter are both very cute. your are right that kids can be some of the best toy testers

  • Thomas is over 60 yrs old kids can remember

the trains names like they know u

I use to like Thomas but know I don't(I'm not seven mom) but they make a lot of money with track master

  • @Superdupafool to my son Chuggington and Thomas & Friends is only 2 years old, he's had fairly equal exposure to both shows and the toys they generate, yet he seems to be very slow at remembering the Chuggers

The way he remembers Duck is possibly a clue here, now there's a character he's had very little exposure to yet he remembers it very clearly. Duck is a classic

  • random question but did you get rusty in a 3 pack if so where because that is what i have and i hav only ever seen one in the stores

  • @thomasmodelseries yes possibly, it may have been in a narrow gauge engine pack BUT i may be totally wrong

quite a few people are asking about Rusty, seems he's a fav

  • @leokimvideo sorry for the late reply but i agree with you on the interactives there was a thomas wooden range where more expensive engines when they go past expensive buildings sir topham hat would say there name the line only lasted a year and i had a couple it got boring real fast

  • XD Great video. Your son is adorable ;)

  • I always had trouble with The Scottish Twins, Bill, and Ben back when I played with Take-Along. And another thing, Rusty was one of the greatest engines I wanted back then, but could never find him.

  • @ToaCelon549 Hope Take n Play makes Rusty (at least in an accurate fashion) :P

  • Yeah, your son better know who Duck is! LOL!

  • my brother is annoying because he removes tenders altogether

  • mac has frecles

  • to be honest with u i wouldent care if the chuggington show dies thomas is best and thats that

  • @Dieselworks123 Chuggers has a place, you need to balance the toy train equation because as it stands Thomas really has it all to themselves.

Who knows with a bit of good competition we may be much better shows and toys from the Thomas empire

  • leo your son is very cute he must love thomas and Chuggington alot

  • Comment removed

  • I'm so amused how he repeats what you say!

  • @ULTIMAFOX22 well he's right at that age when he's learning the language

  • i think the reason he recognizes the thomas train better is beacuse there numbers

thomas is and always will be number 1

  • @shortround551 hmmmmmm, not sure I don't think my 2 year old really relate to numbers, I think it's stuff far simpler than that

    colour, shape, face

  • I wonder if it is the weight difference between the wooden ones and the metal engines that makes my son prefer the mtal ones. Maybe they fit better in his hads also.

I hope to find a Diesel 10 metal T&P one soon to test my theory.

    We dont have and Chuggas.

  • My sons favourite from the show is Diesel 10, he has the same evil laugh that Diesel 10 does at the end of Misty Island Rescue. But when we bought him the wooden version he wont play with him at the same time as his take-n-play engines.

We only have a few and he knows which one is which, when I ask "wheres Den" he'll point to the correct one.

  • @mini696 my son absolutely loves the end piece of Misty Island Rescue when Diesel 10 appears, initially he was really scared but this spun around to curiosity. It's very interesting how fear can transform to love

  • I reckon he remembers more of the Thomas-centric names than the Chugginton characters because of the designs of the two.

Most of the Chuggers have a rounded yet boxy design to them (exeptions being the rolling stock and Old Puffer Pete), and some of the ones he stalled on were in darker colours, making most of their features less distinct.

Thomas engines, however, have their own clear shapes. And their faces are seperate wihich makes their features more noticable.

    Just a theory and all.

  • @halfbakedhex8 yes I agree there is a sameness in the trains, but also the show. to me the TV episodes of chuggers are all fairly similar

  • Hey Leo. After watching this video I thought I'd share something with you. I have a large collection of Thomas Wooden Railway stuff and when I was younger maybe 2004ish I built it into one mega train layout on the living room floor. I was thinking -I did snap a birdseye view photo of it from the stair way I thought maybe I'd tell you just in case your son would like to try to build it. Should I email you a copy of the Photo with a track map?

  • This is a great video. I love watching kids play with Thomas trains, they always use them in a unique yet familiar way. reminds me of the home movies my parents got of my playing with my ertls and Wooden Thomas toys more then a decade ago. That reminds me of something

I think you should do a review of the Ertl Thomas range as you do for modern products. they my favorite line of toys, but because of nostalga people usually never say anything bad about them even though there are obvious flaws.

  • Which episode did Rusty go 'Eeh ah'? Just wondering.

  • @MrConductorFan1406 it's a old one called Tuneful Toots, it's a really nice episode. Rusty gets too excited running the band around Sodor he gets stranded when he runs out of fuel

    Hope I remember it right...lol

  • @leokimvideo Oh. Cool!

  • What's your son's name?

  • @Stuingtion for the sake of online privacy my son and daughter will only ever be known as my son and daughter!

  • @leokimvideo Okay. Okay. I understand. But there's need to be snappy about it.

  • Wow, it must be hard for kids to remember Thomas characters these days. Back in my day we didn't have to deal with so many new characters.

  • Can he come over to the UK and run our rail network!

  • Your kid is beautiful, Leo.

  • @MrMichaelDogson well thats what I looked like at 2, but did I turn out beautiful..!

    NO

  • your son's pretty good at naming the trains =)

  • its cute how he auto maticly says duck :)

  • @Bipolarexpress121 he loves Duck, i'm not exactly sure why as he's rarely ever seen Duck in a TV show of Thomas

  • the one with the face hair swoop thing is mighty

the one with freckles is mac

  • @qothomas well I would never remember that..lol

maybe freckles look like sesame seeds which are on a Big Mac...lol

freckles, seeds, McD, Big Mac, Mac, Mighty Mac...wow it may work..!

  • Can you make a video of testing him with load and go

  • @4Corry you know I'm thinking of doing a few very different sorts of toy reviews, break away from what I was doing in 2011 as it's all getting very samish.

maybe letting my son just play with a toy will reveal a toy for what we want to see, mind you moat of the Thomas stuff is for ages 3 and over

  • 12:07

    Wash Your Troubles Away, or

    Dirty Deeds Come Clean

  • Deisels running on coal according to your son I'm just thinking a class 08 diesel attached to a tender that would look wierd

    Leo keep the videos coming

    Brad

  • @batkid222 i think possibly he starting to see the steamies belong together, having the Dieselworks lets him play out Diesel 10 stories and he's fairly aware of Day Of The Diesels which he seems to like far more then Misty Island Rescue which I thought was fairly similar to The Great Discovery.

  • nice kid

  • this is a really interesting video this might just be me but i think when you asked him about dunbar maybe when he pressed the button he was trying to get it to interact so he would hear his name i might just be going over board. also i wish i could get hoot and toot. also again i think it is interesting tha he knows olwin is a she and how when the interactive koko did not work on the track it sounded like he said sorry koko but again i may just be going over board again anyway great video

  • @thomasmodelseries with all the chuggers he hunts for a sound button even on the die-cast which we know does not have one.

When he plays he basically does not use the interactive chuggers sound button, they all play out silently. I'm not a fan of interactive toys as I really feel it's more of a gimic which is not required, children have amazing imaginations which I which I could tap into

  • tenders to non tender engines. I hated that when my freinds did it!!?!

  • @ejcmoorhouse lol, my son will make a train of a diesel pulling all the tenders he can find...lol

It actually makes for a really interesting looking train

  • @leokimvideo hey it makes a coal train!

  • @1225Forrest yep or he likes to steal from all the steamies...lol

  • @ejcmoorhouse oh I think he actaully said dart's or to my ears he did...

  • @ejcmoorhouse did he say it to a second query, it's not a confident ID

  • @ejcmoorhouse i think that at the end he said "chasworf" witch i think means chatsworth and that was the white chugger

  • the robot hes got is a teenage mutant ninja turtles

  • He's certainly much better at naming trains than my nephew. Leo you have taught him well.

  • @tidmouthmilk12 i would sayhe learns more from watching the TV shows, but fails to pick up on the Chuggington names, for me thats been a eye opener considering when he was first showing a interest in trains he really only liked the Chuggington TV show. Possibly all that bright colours and loads of movement from the characters.

In the end Thomas & Friends have the face he looks at and remembers.

Look carefully how he looks at the face, thats really important here.

  • @leokimvideo I think that's another reason why thomas succeeds, you see a lot of shows like chuggington where the face is built in to the engine, but I've never seen another show where the characters have faces "sitting" on the engines.

  • @leokimvideo

I think one reason that Chuggington characters cannot be remembered by your son is that not all the characters speak or are addressed in each episode. In Thomas, an engine meets another at the signal or station quite often, whereas in Chuggington, they just go past. And when there are lots of characters in an episode, thy do not all have a speaking role.

And having Tomy and Ertl, I cannot mix up the tenders! I am pedantic about those things though.

  • So much wreck!! ThE hOrRoR!!!!!!!!!

  • "Who's that?"

    Blank stare moment.

  • @crazyracer12 loads of blank stares at the chuggers, I was vry suprisd to see this

at the speed kids grow up and develop I would not be able to capture this time again, my point of this video is I find it interesting how the Thomas & Friends characters have really been picked up v Chuggington.

To be honest here my son normally says Chugger to most of the Chuggington trains I ask about.

  • Easy way to remember names is by the paint schemes that each locomotive has that is unique. For Twins like Bash and Dash, I've come to remember that Bash's livery is reversed to that Dash. It helped me out. With the Chuggington characters, I can't remember the characters because they don't have names on the bottom of the engines/trucks/coaches. That and the fact that Take-N-Play are well detailed for the money and have easily remembered characters from a long time running TV show.

  • @ShuntingTank043 none of my family can remember Dash / Bash, not even my daughter. I have tried to remember but I fail as well.

I struggle with all the twins, but I worked out how to remember Hoot and Toot. Two horns is Toot....Toot Toot.

  • @leokimvideo It takes time to remember the names, but I learned Bash and Dash's names by listening to the small rhyme in 'Thomas's Crazy Day'

  • naaw, he's so cute!

And he's really good at remembering all of those characters' names!

  • My dad use to do the names, numbers and colours for the thomas trains with me when i was little. It is good to see you do the same as well.

  • And how can I forget donald and doglas ( not sure of I spelled doglas right )

  • @urltrayoshimario5000 Douglas.

  • Man theres alot of twins in thomas and friends like bill and ben, mighty mac, splatter and dodge, den and dart, bash and dash, and the 2 diesels that are with diesel. (i forgot thier names)

  • @urltrayoshimario5000 yes the number of twins in the series is alarming, but fun. Maybe in 6 months my son will get his head around the twin names, and get together the Chuggington names which he can't remember.

  • only you can make a video of simply a child naming off Thomas characters so entertaining, well done.

  • @MITCHELLtheC17 Same goes for me plus Oliver, Toad, Mavis, S.C.Ruffy, and BoCo

  • Have you found more chuggers for wooden railway in the store

  • Comment removed

  • The most adorable scene is when you show him Rusty, 14:49 when Rusty is looking at the camera, take note of the cheerful smile on Rusty's face, he looks at your son with that smile, and then your son smiles back at him ^_^

That is a great reflection on the amount of joy the Thomas world brings to young children like your son, wouldn't you agree? =D

  • @PokelordEX loco, I have seen my son initially show huge interest in Chuggington and in a funny way that made me do a Chuggington review..!

But the love affair with Chuggers was set more on the TV show, not the toys, what has captured his imagination is the Thomas & Friends characters

I wonder if this is common, remembering all children are different, but all like to play.

I love the old Rusty episode, I think it's called Tuneful Toots.

  • 170 viwer

  • Ahhh...This reminds me when I used to play with my Take-alongs when I was little. Memories.....

  • @Calebtrain You had 'Take Alongs' when you were younger? I don't remember seeing 'Take Alongs' till I started primary school!

  • @SilverZEntertainemnt Sorry, I meant ERTL's. :)

  • @Calebtrain Pssh! You were playing with take-alongs? I was playing with the ERTL ones!

  • @ULTIMAFOX22 I have an ERTL collection as well. (see my video)

  • @Calebtrain High five!

  • @ULTIMAFOX22 *high fives* :)

  • Wow, he actually remembers Duck O_o

  • @TheFattHatt1943 Duck is a interesting one for a number of reasons, first up he has a very different look because he's all square. As far as my son is concerned he's rarely seen him in his latest Thomas DVDs. He remembered this Duck toy from day one.

From what I see in my comments and mail Duck is massively popular even though he's been missing in action for so long. It's possibly a insight into what makes a classic character.

  • i think that hoot and toot remind me of pip and emma from the railway series books

  • @MrOliverGWR11 yes, many others will agree with your thought here, all we need the Thomas crowd to do is pull these characters into toys and films.

  • @MITCHELLtheC17 Only If Sharon Miller Would Remember

  • @Sonic234Fan sharon never will :/

  • @Sonic234Fan well said

  • i saw i video with me when i wuz 3 and PLAYING with hot wheels cars

it wuz so funny becouse i was only racing and chrashes when i let carfully the car falling from like 1 centimeter :D

  • um leo can you do a revieuw about MEGA BLOCKS halo???

  • @theTWmovie thats a 2012 video for me

  • Lol he said Dart

  • Thomas names are easier then chuggers which is good ;)

  • @TheTrainmaster97 That is one advantage Thomas has over Chuggington. Thomas characters are normally just given a name. Chuggington take a train and create a good name for the train but its hard to remember the name.

  • @DTChapman1 you know back when i did my Action Thomas V Thomas Tank many people sighted the fact that Thomas toys have faces which look human. As humans we use faces to remember a name, we don't remember people from their body shape, length of hair or foot size.

I'm sort of thinking those little faces are the real key to why Thomas & Friends is so massively popular with kids.

  • @TheTrainmaster97 BUT there are far more to remember, the Chuggington empire is still very small compared to Thomas & Friends

  • Sweet! Haha :)
