  • Bruce is known to have a few belts from time to time.I was there the night the bouncers at the Pony flagged him. Ain't no crime...we all been there.

  • Chris Thompson do this soooo muvhe better .. ty to bruce fore the song tho.. he didnt have to sing it do,, crap..

  • Springsteen is an amazing song writer but I think Manfred Mann did it better.

  • @Quixoic How do you think they'd have done with For You, and all the other Springsteen covers they built their career on, if Bruce hadn't written them?

  • @CPSJSMSUUMUGA you'll notice I gave him a *big fucking thumbs up* for his writing. Amazing writer, for sure. And "Fire" is one of my favorite songs ever. This one and Blinded will always be his- It's his heart and soul poured into the lyrics, after all, but I far prefer MM's interpretations of both.

  • The amazing thing is how he can take a soft rock song which is at best average, at least amongst his catalogue - it would be one the better sons written by almost anyone else.- and turn it into this emotional masterpiece.

The song that really works whether played solo acoustic, as stadium anthem, and everything in between, is Incident on 57th Street. I think that's one of the greatest songs ever written by *anyone*. Drop it into West Side Story at any point and the music becomes better.

  • The Hammersmith version is brilliant but there is a lifetime of love and pain in this one that was not possible when he was young.

  • @addapost I'm with you.

  • anybody of you guys knows of the Capitol Theatre, Passaic NY performance from 1978? That "For You" version is the best there is in my eyes. So raw, so powerfull.. can't describe what it does to me.

  • that's Passaic NEW JERSEY

  • @jowbowla Hammersmith has been taken down from youtube, but spring for the 99 cents and download it from iTunes. Not a bad price for a priceless piece of music.

  • i always thought the hammersmith version was the best, but i think i like this one a little more. the hammersmith one is very melancholy and desperate, but bruce sounds very alive in this version

  • i agree i think the hammersmith version is unbelievable. on another level, this is great as well, however to me nothing can hold a candle to the hammersmith version

  • @haitianjack5 Anybody know where to find the Hammersmith version on youtube?

  • @phortion i emailed you a link to it.

  • maybe you could buy a cd???

  • great version

  • i just got chills from that song

it was just suchh a good version

  • Where can I download this version?

  • Wonderful song for ever!i Love it everytime, whathever version!excuse me for my language ..(french..)

  • The piano versions to me are superior to the full band versions. That being said, Bruce doesn't sound that good hear. His voice developed an odd twang some time in the late 1990s' (very audible on early Reunion tour boots), and it carried over into the early Rising tour. It gave Bruce's voice a sharp, shrill sound that ruined a lot of the quieter numbers such as this, "Incident," "Meeting Across The River," etc.

  • WOW...this is amazing.wow

  • if anyone is interested in knowing how he came up with this song, my mom used to date him and she wrote him a love poem called For You, and then he turned it into this song. The girl he is talking about in this song is my mother.

  • exactly.

"the way you make me feel" was about my grandma! what a lucky coincidence.

  • If what you are saying is true you are either my nephew or niece because this song is, in fact, all about my sister with whom he lived with in Long Branch in the 70's. She is English born hence the references to England in the lyrics. She now resides in Philadelphia. The Belle Vue lyric is the time he went to NYC and brought her back to Long Branch.

  • this was adressed to oipbhakeld

  • This is heartbreaking

  • Amazing version, chilling.

  • It's the original version !!!

  • It's not the original version. It's sung by the original artist, but his original is a lot faster.

  • This version is far superior to the original IMO.

  • nunca he estado ta cerca de ti como ahora...

  • hes the boss

  • obwohl mir manfred manns version gut gefällt,

das hier ist schon imposant vom chef.

  • Te quiero bruce!! Eres grande.

  • i think i'm gona cry..........

this si my fave bruce song.....and it gets me every time i listen to it

Bruce is a god and a genius!

  • I love you Bruce!!!!

  • Great version, even if I prefer the one on Hammersmith 75.

  • that is DEFINETLY your opinion, Bruce is a different man than he was then, but he still gives it all away at every concert, and is by no means used up

  • ur right, he still does give it all away, but its not even close to being nearly enough, or as much as it used to be. and im sry, my comment on bruce there was a little harsh, musta been in a bad mood that day. i got mad props for bruce, but people tell me hes better now than he was, and thats just not the case. and thats not my opinion, that is a fact. e street band is better tho :)

  • WOW FUCKING WOW, what a faggot you are to get on youtube, search a song by bruce springsteen, because u clearly hate him, and post a comment that is a fucked up statement and can barely be called an opinion let alone the truth you dog, and also people have their own OPINIONS, if you dont like the music you cant tell us that 'bruce sucks and thats the truth' , ppl can be so FUCKING IGNORRANT,

  • magical, outstanding, heart-breaking.

    THANKS BRUCE SEE YOU SOON!

  • impresive...

  • I had only heard Manfred Mann's version and, while they are both great, this one makes so much more sense to me. I love it. Thank you.

  • @Godofwrath, 3 of Manfred Mann's Earth Band's very limited mainstream hits were Springsteen covers, just tossing that out there...

  • thanks this is to touching!

  • his voice changed so much since he put out this song

  • Thanks as always, this is great!

  • any way I can find the audio file for this?

  • YOU ARE THE GREATEST- IT s for YOUUUUUUU!!!!!

  • Thanks agian! this is breathtaking

  • great vidieo and sounds like this show is good too

  • Not the best version of this song from him. He's got some sort of twang going on here, almost Dylan-like. I prefer his live version at the Hammersmith Odeon, uploaded by glammer.

Still a good version, and it is the Boss.

  • Targuzz, meet you again, brother...Bruce can not help being mimself, right? How high is the point of his artistic expression...you cannot but keep wondering...

  • Have you heard the studio version with Bruce?

If not, please do that before you call it slow. Yes, this version may be slow...I'll agree to that.

I think often one tends to like the version you heard first is the best. I heard Mannfred's version first, but it doesn't even deserve to be compared to the original version by Bruce....

  • amazing, this is first time I've heard this song, and I love it already .

  • how can you say anybody sings a bruce song better than bruce?? am sorry mate but no way! BRUCE IS A LIVING LEGEND!

  • Without Bruce Springsteen, Mannfred Mann doesn't exist ever. End of discussion.

  • Why don't you cry about a little!

  • Manfred Mann covers at two other Springsteen songs: Blinded by the Light & Spirit in the Night. Since Springsteen has written and performed at a level of excellence for over 35 years that is unmatched by *anyone*, whether someone likes Mann's three Springsteen songs better than Springsteen's versions is really pretty trivial. I'm sure Bruce appreciated the royalties.

I suggest looking around for a live, full band, rock version of For You by Bruce.

  • I'm very sorry for whatever has happened that has made you so angry. Life isn't fair, is it?

  • Hey, no sweat. I've done it, too. Sadly, anonymity can bring out the worst in all of us.

  • bruce is a friend of vets be cool and thank you

  • destroy this comment

  • AWESOME!!!!!!!!

    This is what I feel;

    87!!! K(/GSGJ785n///¤( nnt4n75srgrdhmhujegkdkg"((QR(/ (

  • His first stab at a love song! he has written some belters since!!

  • THANKS BRUCE ! - WOW

  • WOW!! LOVE THIS SONG

    BRuCE!!!

  • Manfred Mann's version is good too.

I do like them both though.

  • I gotta go with Manfred Mann's version on this one. Bruce's is too slow, but I still like it.

  • This is one of the best videos of Bruce!. Awesome.

  • AMAZIN!! - Great! MAGIC!!

  • more for the fallen

  • This is NOT about suicide...

  • thank you! somebody else who knows how to look beyond the skin of words. bruce said that this was his first stab at a love song. it has suicide motifs, but is not about suicide.

  • Here's how it goes. A rock'n'roller who's had a 30+ year carreer is NOT drunk/high/stoned/whatever on stage. Ever. If they would, they wouldn't have lasted.

  • Well...Keith Richards.

  • Here's how it goes. A rock'n'roller who's had a 30+ year carreer and is NOT Keith Richards is never drunk/high/stoned/whatever on stage. Ever. If they would, they wouldn't have lasted.

  • haha...yeah :P

  • I think u've never seen an old Joe Cocker Live Concert... he drank a whole bottle of whiskey on stage XD in more than just one concert

  • Bruce's band actually has a no drugs/no over drinking policy and once fired a good friend of theirs (although they're still friends now) for drinking too much. Springsteen HAS, however, been drunk during studio recording sessions. Listen to his "Because the Night" studio recordings, he's CLEARLY drunk during them.

  • @IZSBHR

    Sorry fella but your wrong.

Look up Bruce talking about Danny and a certain smoking habit he had.

  • ???? you dont have springsteen soul felling

  • This is the real real original, created by Bruce in 1973, played in the following years very often full band, but this accoustic version remains for me personally the real one. It matches the lyrics at its best.

1974 COVERED by Manfred Mann's Earthband, and in 2004 re-covered by the Disco Boys for the dance floors, but based on the MMB-version.

"For you" has been played by Bruce one time only on the current "Magic"-Tour, i.e. 15-Oct-2007 in Toronto. I'm sure it will not be the last time.

  • heh heh i was at the Toronto show! it's one of my faves too so it was awesome he first played it at my show ;D

  • Yeah, I like this version more, too. It's alot more mournful.. given the theme of the song: Suicide. I'm sure goofball fans jump & scream w/ joy during the ESB version..

  • Bruchee, you're brilliant!. Bravo por this video: it's one of the best. Thanks. In a few days we'll see him, here, in Spain. Bruce forever.

  • MMEB version is better I think!

  • this is great i cant get over how good this version is, it seems like its the way it was meant to be sung being wat the song truthfully is about

  • i hope i get to hear this in milan in nov

  • superb!!! he is doing it on the magic tour - role on!!

  • I never considered this song to be about a literal suicide, even though he mentions it...I don't think of it that way, anyway. I guess I could be wrong.

  • awesome

  • Simplemente...el jefe,inigualable

  • yes, about suicide - a cult hit amongst early springsteen fans...he played it the first time i ever saw him in person in 1978 - blew me away...so much sadder than the album version

  • is the song about a suicid?

  • For You, a new book on Bruce exploring his fans relationship to the man and his music. September 2007.

  • i love myself for being there..

  • One of his most underrated of all time...saw it performed on piano in Asbury 2001...unreal

  • love it love it love it

  • Sorry, ist natürlich nicht von Born to run, sondern vom Greetings from Asbury Park Album!

  • Wundervolle Version...nahe an der unglaublichen Version vom Born to run Album!Gänshaut!

  • Hör dich mal die Hammersmith Odeon Version an, nur geil!

  • Amaaaaaaaazing

  • I hate myself for not being there

  • i am in love with this version.

  • amazing love song ...

    great voice ...

    amazing artist ...

the song can make you cry ...

  • Sings a bit false sometimes, but he's got passion.

  • The song is about a girl who commits suicide isn't it?

  • The Boss is the Boss. Nevertheless I like the Manfred Mann version more.

  • Thank you so much for posting! One of the very best. Early Springsteen. Classic

  • temazo baby!

  • Beautiful
