@Quixoic How do you think they'd have done with For You, and all the other Springsteen covers they built their career on, if Bruce hadn't written them?
@CPSJSMSUUMUGA you'll notice I gave him a *big fucking thumbs up* for his writing. Amazing writer, for sure. And "Fire" is one of my favorite songs ever. This one and Blinded will always be his- It's his heart and soul poured into the lyrics, after all, but I far prefer MM's interpretations of both.
The amazing thing is how he can take a soft rock song which is at best average, at least amongst his catalogue - it would be one the better sons written by almost anyone else.- and turn it into this emotional masterpiece.
The song that really works whether played solo acoustic, as stadium anthem, and everything in between, is Incident on 57th Street. I think that's one of the greatest songs ever written by *anyone*. Drop it into West Side Story at any point and the music becomes better.
anybody of you guys knows of the Capitol Theatre, Passaic NY performance from 1978? That "For You" version is the best there is in my eyes. So raw, so powerfull.. can't describe what it does to me.
@jowbowla Hammersmith has been taken down from youtube, but spring for the 99 cents and download it from iTunes. Not a bad price for a priceless piece of music.
i always thought the hammersmith version was the best, but i think i like this one a little more. the hammersmith one is very melancholy and desperate, but bruce sounds very alive in this version
i agree i think the hammersmith version is unbelievable. on another level, this is great as well, however to me nothing can hold a candle to the hammersmith version
The piano versions to me are superior to the full band versions. That being said, Bruce doesn't sound that good hear. His voice developed an odd twang some time in the late 1990s' (very audible on early Reunion tour boots), and it carried over into the early Rising tour. It gave Bruce's voice a sharp, shrill sound that ruined a lot of the quieter numbers such as this, "Incident," "Meeting Across The River," etc.
if anyone is interested in knowing how he came up with this song, my mom used to date him and she wrote him a love poem called For You, and then he turned it into this song. The girl he is talking about in this song is my mother.
If what you are saying is true you are either my nephew or niece because this song is, in fact, all about my sister with whom he lived with in Long Branch in the 70's. She is English born hence the references to England in the lyrics. She now resides in Philadelphia. The Belle Vue lyric is the time he went to NYC and brought her back to Long Branch.

that is DEFINETLY your opinion, Bruce is a different man than he was then, but he still gives it all away at every concert, and is by no means used up

I received the Springsteen book "For You" and I was really blown away... if any book can capture what it's like to be at a Springsteen show, this is it. The images are as good as concert photos get..
Not the best version of this song from him. He's got some sort of twang going on here, almost Dylan-like. I prefer his live version at the Hammersmith Odeon, uploaded by glammer.
Targuzz, meet you again, brother...Bruce can not help being mimself, right? How high is the point of his artistic expression...you cannot but keep wondering...
If not, please do that before you call it slow. Yes, this version may be slow...I'll agree to that.
I think often one tends to like the version you heard first is the best. I heard Mannfred's version first, but it doesn't even deserve to be compared to the original version by Bruce....
Manfred Mann covers at two other Springsteen songs: Blinded by the Light & Spirit in the Night. Since Springsteen has written and performed at a level of excellence for over 35 years that is unmatched by *anyone*, whether someone likes Mann's three Springsteen songs better than Springsteen's versions is really pretty trivial. I'm sure Bruce appreciated the royalties.
I suggest looking around for a live, full band, rock version of For You by Bruce.

Here's how it goes. A rock'n'roller who's had a 30+ year carreer is NOT drunk/high/stoned/whatever on stage. Ever. If they would, they wouldn't have lasted.
Here's how it goes. A rock'n'roller who's had a 30+ year carreer and is NOT Keith Richards is never drunk/high/stoned/whatever on stage. Ever. If they would, they wouldn't have lasted.
Bruce's band actually has a no drugs/no over drinking policy and once fired a good friend of theirs (although they're still friends now) for drinking too much. Springsteen HAS, however, been drunk during studio recording sessions. Listen to his "Because the Night" studio recordings, he's CLEARLY drunk during them.
