In fact, the negotiation started with him saying "I'm willing to pay around £200" and that being accepted.

Honestly, why couldn't the first words out of that apprentice (forgotten his name) been; "Okay then, £250?" or something. Being willing to 'negotiate around' doesn't mean 'accept it or else' - he didn't even try once the £500 failed.
