the knees should generally land evenly and you should be pushing forward slightly in an attacking movement as you are falling down. I would consider emptying your lungs after you have landed.
Disagree re putting your knee behind it. You dont neccessarily have your hips and shoulders turned away if you have flexibility in your hips to get your knee in that position.
With balls staright down the line of your body you should be looking to have 2 surfaces behind the ball.
My dad showed me the exact same way to bend the leg. He told me that it is done like that because of the fact that, if the ball comes in with high speed, it hits your thigs, which in turn act as a coushion. Another reason for that is that the ball doesn't go in between your legs. The way you demonstrate it leaves a gap between your legs.
there's no gap. your arms and hands are there to cover the gap. so when done properly, there's no hole. There will only be a hole if the goalkeeper is lazy and doesn't bend at the knees enough, which then means that the hands can't get low enough to cover the "gap". Only laziness will make for a "gap".
@stlouisgoalkeeping yeah but if you dont get the hands there fast enough then the ball will roll in to the net, i usually just sit down on my knees picking it up but then the shots arent so hard i guess but this is a good technique
the reason we english bend our knees inwards is probably to do with the long barrier in cricket. i do fielding for cricket and i ve been taught to do the knee bend for football as well.
finally ive been taught the proper way by ur vid.
yeh and i guess that is sorta why english goalies fail coz they get taught cricket in their football
We actually have a goalkeeper from Liverpool here training at the moment and when we showed him your comment, he agreed. He grew up playing some cricket and he can totally see how the technique has crossed over. He has the same problem, but we are working with him to help him correct the technique and his is getting it quite quickly.
we have an International Program, where goalkeepers from all over the world come in for 1-3 weeks to train here at the Academy. Next week we will have another English goalkeeper coming in who play non-league football, but is a coach at Portsmouth.
All respect, I love this academy but 0:31 was just rofl :P :D.. It's amazing how you don't just concentrate to teach your students, you teach all the goalkeepers world wide... God bless your academy SIR!
Thank you, sir. I have watched all of your videos as well and I have a great amount of respect for you as a goalkeeping trainer and the techniques you teach.
@stlouisgoalkeeping Thank you very much. But I only try to help other goalkeepers, who have no trainer, as well as giving other trainers so influence for their training.
Because goalkeeper trainers should share techniques and training ideas
haha love how like every minute or so there is a shirtless old man just jogging along the screen :)

But, hey, thats football. Its all about opinions.

A very good explaination why you should not turn and tuck the knee in to the middle.
Your hip is locked and you cannot react to the locked side, so it's a negative advice for goalkeepers to turn and tuck the knee in and down.
Great done

hi, would you say that, the lower you bend, the better? ie. the lower your body (especially knees) are when collecting the ball, the better?
Thank you very much (:

@philipisphilip
agreed. The more you can bend your knees and get your body lower, the better.
