  • Great info thanks for your time!

Very good info. Sorry you got jerk mail thats not right.

    Thanks again.

    ConGear aka Zippy

  • To those who habitually post negative comments I should point out that pissing on someone else's candle doesn't make yours shine any brighter! Give acknowledgement where it's due - these videos are a great resource, in particular for those lacking machining knowledge or workshop experience and wish to learn. Grateful thanks to Shorty for his efforts and dedication. It shows true community spirit! Well done Sir!

  • Keep the videos coming! I like your style. I'm a hobbyist woodworker (yeah... I know... boo-hiss) but I've learned a lot from watching your videos. Hoping to increase the precision of my wooden gears by learning how they're cut in metal.

  • Well put comments at the end, Youtube was made for people like you keep up the good work, I'll be watching for sure...

  • I really appreciate the hard work and gentle approach you treat this tough topic with. Please don't listen to the negative comments. Again thank you for sharing this info.

  • Thanks and good job. I work with kids building robots and we have a little CNC mill that we are going to build some gears with, now that you have give us some courage (and knowledge) :o)) thanks again.

  • Lots of useful info for faceted hobbing, thanks for the videos. Dont pay attention to the keyboard commandos. Some people always know more, are always bigger stronger, faster, etc. when they're on the other side of a monitor.

  • I loved your videos! Don't let the you tube haters stop you!

  • Hey !

    Screw the haters

    Great video's thankyou.

  • Shorty, you are an amazing resource to the internet community! Don't let the bastards get you down, brother, you are invaluable to us, the people who count!

  • Thanks so much, Hobbynut! Your videos are superb! I'm definitely going to try out the techniques you have demonstrated. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

  • Great information and thanks for the video!

I have seen huge gear grinding equipment in a factory, but I didn't know if gear cutting was possible in a small home shop. I did a search and found your great videos.

What you are showing here would have been near impossible for most people to imagine, let alone do, if your videos were not available. Thanks for taking the time to lay it out step by step so it is clear and understandable.

  • I have been watching your videos over and over and am now finally a lathe and mill owner and can't wait to get started on making my own hobbs and gears. Please don't get disheartened by negative comments that are dished out by a few so called arm chair experts. There are many more of us hobby shop machinests that really do appreciate what you have taken the time to do, and I know it does take time to film and edit these videos, great work , please keep em coming!!

  • thank you! very helpful! I'm saving ur series to my favs for future reference!

  • thank you! very helpful! I'm saving ur series to my favs for future reference!

  • Nice job on the videos. I really enjoyed them (I watched both the series on making the gears and also the hobs). As far as the haters and those who only have negative stuff to say... you just have to ignore them. Obviously their parents didn't teach them that "if you don't have something nice to say, shut the F up" :-) Keep up the good work. Even though someone might be able to afford to buy a tool, knowing how someone else makes it can be invaluable. A+ on the videos.

  • Not only is this free information, this guy actually took the time to make these videos. I'm a CNC Machinist and i work 10 hour shifts minimum and it's not easy to find the time to share this information. Technical Information about machining is getting hard to come by these days because they don't teach it in schools anymore.

  • First off, take the source of the comment into account. Don't listen to those who complain w/o ever doing the work themselves. It takes courage to put yourself in front of the camera like that. So what if you're not 100% correct all the time- at least you're out there trying! Besides, I can't name a single human being who doesn't make a mistake now and then.

You're providing a lot of good information here. My training is as a machine shop instructor, and you're doing a good job. Thanks!!!

  • Ignore all the critics, Keep up the good work,,Wish I found this 3 weeks ago when I had to cut an emergency gear

  • Well the hell with clowns who respond negative...I have learnt a great deal about gear making by watching your vidz. Congratulations on getting a position as a professional machinist. I can only hope to work in a machine shop myself...still looking. Anyway, I hope you can find the time to put up some more vidz soon, I do enjoy them, as many others do too...good luck and let the chips fly!

  • Well said hobbynut!

Many times people try to make themselves look smart at the expense of others.

Ignore them; They are nothing more than crawdads in a bucket.

You know more than I, and I admit it.

    Rock on bro!!

  • Only passively interested in the gear cutters because of a friend who actually CUTS gears for a living. BUT, your words are very true.

Simply put, people need to learn to stop judging others for wanting to do things that they themselves would not do. They should simply not do the offensive action, and live and let live. Unless something directly violates another's rights in some way; let it be.

  • I think u did good, and you showed us how to do things simplistically which helped alot.

  • Dont worry about critics!!! ... you are DOING something productive! most critics waste their time doing nothing but being critics...taking up space and resourches from those who are really working at improving themselves.

I never trust smug "experts ' anyway

  • I learned a lot from you, thank you for your time. Keep up the good work!

  • Don't listen to the haters. People complain for the sake of complaining.

I picked up some good stuff from your videos. Thanks for sharing.

  • Great videos, just bought a unimat 3 lathe/mill. I wanted to learn how things are used on it and can be made. Your videos were the first thing that i saw, VERY informative, practical and at a level most people can understand. I just need to find a project that can use you simple technique to make gears. Im sorry to hear the bs from the armchair warriers. It obvious that you know what you are doing, they are just jealous that they cant do what you can, be helpful.

Al the best, hope to see more :)

  • You, sir have helped me quite a bit. I have not a single machine shop tool to speak of, but I am very interested in the processes. I plan on taking an OPTIONAL course in my Auto/Diesel/Ag degree program. Seeing how the tools are made, and used, helps me wrap this stuff around my head better (I think) than reading about it in books.

Thank You Very Much! Your efforts (in my own humble, but accurate, opinion) do not go unappreciated.

  • You could stand on a street corner and hand out diamonds the size of golf balls wrapped in $100 bills and you will get more complaints than compliments.

That being said -- shrug off the complaints and just know that your series of videos is BAR NONE the most informative how-to series on YouTube. And it's not just the info content. Your smooth presentation and ability to edit out the unneeded BS are as good as what's on TV. I wish the ppl at Expert Village could borrow some of your talents.

  • thanks for doing this! these videos are great information.

  • Hobbynut, at work I have machined parts that are in space and power plants, but at home I am also a hobbynut myself, good work man, don't stop, when I am working on my own projects with my own budget, I do whatever works, I, just like you have found many other methods that work well, and I am not ashamed of what you do and I am not ashamed of what I do, Thank You for not sinking to the level of the critics, It stinks that so many people are so mean. you have class my friend- God Bless

  • Hey hobbynut, I am a complete novice and I am just trying to figure out the whole machining process. Your video series has helped me to clarify how metal work is done. Thank You very much for your effort and I hope that you put out some more information so that I can learn from you.

  • hey hobbynut i am a cert.watchmaker there is one thing ive learned there is more than one way to skin a cat .i found your videos very informative, keep up the the excellent work. ps there is noone out there that is perfect don,t worry about the intellectuals that send stupid comments.

  • Lots of idiots about, Shorty - don't let them bother you. Thanks for the videos!

  • Man! The last instalment bummed me out. I've been blown away by the practical and intuitive approach you've taken to cutting gears. Very disapointed to hear that you have detractors. You're a great example of what makes humans impressive creatures. Lets see some worm gears!

  • Great stuff both video technique and the gearing curring. Your delivery was fluid, many professionals cannot informwithout verbally stalling. Be proud, it sure was good to watch you certainly made no claim as so many "experts" do that they know it all and there is no other way.

Criticism is just another form of flattery.

    Mike

  • Thanks for a great series! Very instructive and generous. Keep up the good metalworking!

  • As a new owner of a lathe, I am enjoying your videos! Thank You !

There is always more than one way to do a job, thanks for showing us yours!

  • I love your videos, I hope you keep it up and even do more please.

  • Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Don't let the idiots - er I mean know it alls get to you.

  • Your videos are for me a GREAT!! source of learning. Where I work, we have 2 manual Bridgeport mills and 3 lathes. I have been wanting to learn CNC personally for awhile due to a growing amount of tough projects I am doing that I could never do on a manual, and plus it would be fun :). Because of your video's, and many other hobbyist's on YouTube, I am now convinced to buy a Sherline CNC lathe and Mill.

Thanks man, keep them videos coming.

  • Great series, just ignore the folks that want to criticize.

  • I've watched your videos and there great even though I had seen this particular method before ... just never seen anyone use CNC to produce them in that manner which is really neat.

As for the negative comments ... I imagine most of those are coming from people who work in machine shops who cut gears professionally with expensive shapers and hobbers. They feel threatened by the fact that you're sharing knowledge that could hurt their business (why us hobby machinist should stick together) :O)

  • Greate tutorial movies keep it goin on

i hope we see more of your work

    Henk van Item

  • Hi Hobbynut.

I wish you would start to produce videos again, I found them excellent :-)

Just ignore the negative comments, it's a virus

  • Great work. A relaxed aproach to technical problems, and well explained.

I am an engineer (gear design and production) and can do all these things at work using the correct equipment etc. But for the home hobbyist you are a mine of information.

    Well done keep it up.

  • Wow, Thanks for the compliments.

  • I just wanted to tell you that I learned a great deal from your videos, and I was waiting for more and wondering why the videos stopped coming. I'm disappointed to hear that the buttplugs of the world got you down, but I am sincerely pleased that you have decided to disregard them and continue posting. Thank you for what you have done, and I am subscribing so I will be sure to know when your new videos show up. I, for one, will be watching every one.

  • Very informative and enjoyable video series Shorty, thank you! Don't be distracted by the naysayers--you're providing valuable and helpful info. Please keep it up, you've definitely got fans man!

  • Hey, Man, I loved the series. You answered all my questions, and I think I could make the hobs I need once I get my Phase Converter running (Machine is "too big" - if there is such a thing- but you use what you have) Thanks for taking the time. In just about every thing like this that I see or read, I hear feedback from the "experts" about how wrong the author is. Funny thing is, the thing works and is right there to see. Thanks again.

    Doc Donaldson

  • Absolutely great job on this series of videos... I cannot express how much I am enjoying them. Great machining skills and a real talent in front of the camera (great delivery and style!). Your work far surpasses most everything on TV. I honestly think you could do the machine shop version of New Yankee work shop on PBS... move over Norm Abrams!

    Warmest Regards from Baltimore!

  • the world is full of know it all naysayers, I found this set of vids very informative please keep them coming!!

  • Please keep doing what you do as I have learned a hugh amount about gears and gear cutting from you. I check everyday to see if you have posted a new video and I think your material is great. Don't listen to the idiots who do nothing but post negative comments and don't lift a finger to help anyone out. you are a great asset to the Sherline community and to people like me who thirst for the knowledge that you bring to the online world. Thanks so much for what you do.

  • never underestimate the power of human stupidity. No mater what you do someone some where will take it too seriously.

  • Bring on the worms!

    I know what you mean.

I have watched some of those guys who just can't seem to stop from throwing barbs.

I figure they must have a miserable life spending time just trying to mess with others. Almost makes me feel sorta sad for them. Almost, that is.

About the other worms. Definately vote to see how you did the worm gear. Especially since you only had three good teeth on the sample.

    Congrats on the new job!

I'v been a long time viewer. Good Job!

  • What you are doing is wonderful. There are few altruistic people like you in the world. All the rest are useless pieces of sh*t.Ignore the big headed, jealous idiots. If they want to criticize, in a helpful way, they should upload video responses .

I look forward to watching your worm gear video. Please upload it soon. Thanks

  • Great videos man... Free information is always good!

    THANKS!

  • Great video Series. Thanks for the information!

I have been looking around for some while about cutting gears for my R/C cars and ive now found the right way to do it. Again, thankyou very much for this series

  • That was how I got started in this hobby, It was an off shoot from my R/C days. I purchased my first lathe from someone else in the hobby under the assumption I would make some of my parts, after a while I enjoyed making things better than racing. Good luck to you

  • Great speach and good information for us home hobbiests.

  • Thanks as a hobby machinest and never cutting any gears yet its given me the info on how to get started, keep doing the vids

    good stuff.

  • Thanks, you taught me what I wanted to know. kudos

  • glad I could help, that is what this is all about, helping other

  • great stuff here - these kinds of videos is what youtube was originally for. dont even pay any attention to those laptop gansters!

  • I enjoyed your series. Very informative. Thanks!

  • Sorry, I helped build the Web but I can't help the fact that when you put a billion people on the net, some of them are idiots.

I found the videos useful and I have a degree in nuclear physics from Oxford university. So I don't see what the armchair warriors have to chest beat over.

Only suggestion I would make is to try to use manual focus on the video cam for the close up shots, and try to get a bit more light in. But doing videos by yourself is pretty hard and a pro would have difficulty

  • I only put a couple hundred thousand on the net. lol Thanks for the suggestions on the videos but I am afraid I dont have any kind of manual focus capabilites. I am trying to figure out how to do some better lighting but I am findng that with the additional lighting I am getting a lot of glare off the fresh cut metal. I will have to keep working on this.

    Thanks

  • G/Day Mate, Thanks for your helpful video's Iam on the other side of the world to you and Iam useing your tips and tricks, Don't waste your time on the neg's,, most of your watcher appreciate all the useful info that's being passed to us, It may seem that the knocker are in the majority, only because most postive watcher don't leave a comet. Looking forward to the worm drive video, and if you are ever in Sydney drop me a line, I'll shout you lunch and some beers, Kind Regards SowandPigs,

  • Thanks, If or when I make it to Sydney I will be sure and look you up.

  • Shorty,Thanks for the videos and please let me wish you a Happy New Year to you and your folks.

I have now listened to all of the new videos and feel for you , in terms of the nonsense that you have had to endure .

Personally,I find your work very inspiring

and I find the way you present , very fresh and human.....not plastic like most presenters feel they have to be.

You ,Sir , are a Gentleman.

  • Thank you, I do try to present the material in a way that is down to earth and easy to understand.

  • Hello Shorty. Just wanted to tell everyone that I am the guy in Ohio you made the worm wheel for. It was off the fence of circa 1930's Crescent wood jointer. As you know I attempted to get several experienced machinist to make this gear with no success. You, Shorty, are the genius who was able to figure out how to do it and it works perfectly. Thank you, Shorty.

  • Thank you For the challenge it was fun working out the problem, You can only imagine how excited I was to find out it worked out ok.

  • Buddy, you're an amazing inspiration to machining newbies like myself. The internet is full of knuckleheads that don't appreciate free gifts like you are giving. Thank you so much and keep it up!

  • Thanks and keep it up. I enjoyed the videos. Just ignore those that sit back, don't contribute at all, but never fail to criticize.

  • Thanks for this series of videos; they have been both helpful and inspirational. I also know what you mean by armchair warriors. I also make YouTube videos and will get some of the same attacks, however the positive ones more than make up for the few jerks out there. Im in the same boat, its a hobby. Even if I sometimes have the extra money, I enjoy trying to make it myself. Keep making videos! ---John---

  • thanks for the videos, i cant wait for the worm gear video i always thought about making one back in my highschool manufacturing corse

  • I just wanted to say thanks and keep it up. I can appreciate that making educational videos is hard work. I bet you have more fans then you realise!

  • I, for one, appreciate your series, insight and knowledge. I stumbled across it tonight and watched all the videos. At this point I dont have a need to cut gears but I do like to see how people do things. I dont even have a lathe or real mill. I only have a few CNC routers that Ive hacked together in a kind of learn as you go way. Ive also had to deal with the critics, but Ive made some good friends along the way. Thanks for giving your time and sharing your knowledge.

  • Keep up the good work Hobbynut, I really enjoyed all of your video's. :)

  • 'armchair warriours'<< I know what you mean, honestley, i got fed up of thease people, i get critisized by people for small things, they dont have anything other to do than find things to pick aboute, but now i just ignore them, i think your videos are great, and i hope to see more!

    matt

  • I like your spirit Hobbynut and of course your videos (otherwise I wouldn't have watched everyone of them from start to finish, some of them even several times). So I'm very glad you're back.

I was a little active in some of the machning forums out there in the past, but I was fed up with all the flame throwing and the "exclusive club of mutual admiration" where only a selected group of superficial people seemed to fit.

Anyhow I'm sincerely happy you're back.

  • Thanks, I am planning on doing more. I let them keep me down for a while but as I said in the video I am over it now.

  • I love this vid. Keep it up. I would like to see more. No one is perfect, forget all of those who think they are. Nice job!

  • I know I speak for the majority, that if it weren't for guys like yourself taking the time to produce an informative and well constructed video tutorial the rest of us would be in the dark. Regarding the quality of your videography, the quality of the information that you pass on far outways the video quality. Keep up the good job, and I look forward to seeing more of your videos. Thanks.

  • Frankly, fuck the "experts", I love your videos.

    Keep them coming.

  • Keep up the good work!!!
