The reason they discontinued the push buttons was the work of Ralph Nader who decided that the different styles of transmissions were a confusion to the American People. He felt that there should be only one style of transmission drive basically the column mount trans stick with quadrant ,not quite true as some cars had floor mounted drives all makes used push buttons at one time. They were for most part goof proof. My dad owned a 56 Plymouth with the push buttons and he had no problems
My family has had at least 8 chrysler products ranging from '56 to '64. We're talking Chryslers, Imperials, a Dodge and a Valiant...all with pushbutton drive. We did not have one bit of trouble with any of these cars with concerns to the pushbutton drive. Oh, they kick ass when it comes to speed shifting.
You can see the lady's expression: " Oh! Is this how you work it?" The guy is all like "Yeah! This kicks ass! Don't tell me what to do! I know how to work it!" Lol!
My dad had a 1960 Plymouth Fury with push button transmission. I remember him having problems with reverse. He had to park where he could pull forward to get out.
I drove a '59 Dodge that had the pushbutton system, and I damn near panicked when one of the buttons got caught under the metal dashboard panel! Wonder if that's happened to anyone else....
My best friend's dad had one, it was his second car. He let us drive it while we were in high school back in the 1960's. The push button transmission I recall worked perfectly. It was a very nice car and a smooth ride. These cars were built much stronger than they are today, there was no plastic parts.
One day it was parked outside on the street and someone came by and crashed into it. My friends dad decided to get rid of it, I thought I was going to cry.

My friend:
"I would still buy a 1956 Honda over any 1956 American car!!!"
Me:
"Good luck walking everywhere..."

What a satisfying climax.

Ford and Rambler also used push button automatics for a few years.

They probably went back to levers because those buttons probably periodically got stuck.

chrysler products came with push-button beginning in 56. before there was a lever on right side of dash. 1964 was last year for push-button i think.

Too many system defaults cause them to discontinue the push button transmission.
Milas19962002 2 years ago
i kinda figured that. but now we have Electric Shift in a scene the same.
But understood to many faults i to would discontinue if i couldn't perfect it.
