  • do clapton fans just ignore the whole decade of the 80's? man he did some horrid stuff. clapton- he didnt even record the best guitar parts in his best guitar song

  • Art is about what you have to say with your instrument, not how many notes you hit. Clapton has become something like an orchestral performer, brilliantly rendering the works of his artistic betters, flawed men who had more in common with Garcia than Clapton.

  • @debenito: Yeah, "Sow in Heaven". One of Clapton's all time greats. I'm not sure what you mean by feeling sorry for me. I acknowledged in my post that Clapton is a great guitar player. I just think that he is not terribly original, especially when compared to Garcia, who spent his entire career on musical ground that most bands don't even know exists. Garcia himself once said that the one thing he'd like to do before dying is "learn how to actually play the guitar". That being said, art

  • Clapton's kind of insincere. Brilliant technician, but about as charismatic and engaging as a slammed door. Garcia wore his heart on his sleeve, that's why people loved him. Does anyone have audio of their one live appearance together? Some sort of African aid concert in the UK.

  • @Turgorful I'm very sorry for you but I'm sure that Clapton has been one of greates stars we have sow in heaven.

  • Genius, pure genius being displayed in this vid of Jer's talent...

  • Awesome show...

  • Awesome show...

  • I wish his jgb and legion of Mary works weren't so hard to get a hold of.

  • i love both, got to give jerry the edge. but only cause he is American. got to be patriotic w this boob as president

  • caught a total buzz off this one!!!!

  • did Jerry ever push his kid out the window>??

clapton is up there with springsteen and cobain as the most overrated musicians ever

  • clapton's guitar playing is boring with a few exceptions

  • They both loved the same music, just approached it differently. Garcia played blues, but mythically. Clapton is a blues hit man -- a purist and a living legend.

  • And i love eric a lot more than i show in the txt below but im tired of people talking about jerry in a hateful way. Love y'all

  • does anyone know what guitar hes playing, im thinkin his dragon but not sure

  • @DustyR101 : it's tiger

  • (<3}:)

  • Sorry, I respect Jerry Garcia in so many ways, but if you think this version is superior to Clapton's version on Slowhand, you are musically insane and obsessed with Garcia beyond reason. Clapton's version was true to the song and true to the genre of laid-back country music. This is just a shadow of what Jerry could have done with this song, given his circumstances at this point in his life. Even just on the surface, he misses notes and the crowd is louder than the whole band.

  • @aleester yea...im insane for thinking this is superior to clapton...you are insane for saying something that dumb

  • Not sure what all the hullabaloo is about. This video shows a wasted Garcia with weak vocals. You can't compare a vibrant Clapton with this. Sorry Deadees.

  • @klaatu2008 people go to hell who talk about Jerry that way... Maybe he should do a couple lines of blow to get pumped like your boy clapton. I love E.C. but where he took from his elders music, jerry created his own. the enire band was competely revolutary and jerry is the reason. he just loves picking on songs he enjoys. RESPECT, and btw listen to the crowd who listened to the real version...you can tell how much it was loved.

  • All this talk about Jerry vs Eric has got me thinking about Dueling Banjos. That would have been sweet with Jerry on Banjo.

  • if i could go back in time i would like to be in the warfield dancing to this band around this period.

  • Jerry Garcia...The most recorded guitarist in human history. There is a reason.

  • This man just stands there and moves mountains.

  • Eric Clapton whodat?

  • Clapton is a legend. Jerry is a legend. Why can't people enjoy the fact that you have a legend covering another legend's song and just dance?

  • What is all his judging about? Clapton's version is great. This version is also top notch. But for everyone that thinks that Jerry's version is superior, maybe Jerry should have written it. Without Eric there wouldn't have been a song just 8 minutes of silence.

  • @john9944 ....I am pretty sure JJ CAle wrote it bro

  • @hipmaf420 It was written by Eric, Marcy Levy and George Terry. But, it does sound like JJ. regardless it is a great tune and Jerry did an excellent version and expanded to 8 + minutes there is a lot to enjoy.

  • @john9944 This is fine as wine, I loved Marcy Levy and Eric singing together - Nice groove by Jerry and the gang

  • I was at this show! Like it was yesterday! wow.....

  • Clapton is better , no coments...

  • Jerry Happy Christmas

  • MUSICIANS by definition: GRATEFUL DEAD!!!!!!

i'm pretty sure that's how that tune was to sound, Eric did very well but...... maybe thats the difference between coke and homegrown consumption.

  • @loojamboo I couldn't have said it any better myself...

  • Any chance we could all just stay on the topic of music and keep it respectful?

Music, remember? Thats what this was all about.

  • great song, love it !!!! :-)

  • Well gents glad you got that all figured out for us..you don't mind if I listen to some of the sweetest pickin do ya? well thanks.... and by the way thanks Mr Garcia and the guys for the sweet sounds ya done.

  • jerry i will see you in hell bud and you better sing this song when we meet bud

  • who are you to judge,,,

  • I'm sure Jerrry would just LOVE ya'll bitching and arguing over who is better. IMBECILES!

  • Jerry v Clapton why such quantal thoughts?

  • you better run and hide dude,

legions of dead heads are gping to seek you out.

you're lucky charles manson is locked up...

the rest of us are probably to stoned/passifist to do anything about it

but insulting jerry is like burning the koran! not wise!!!

  • Comparing Jerry and Clapton is a little tough. Jerry is essentially a bluegrass player and Clapton is a blues artist. I think Clapton could have outshone Jerry while flat picking but Jerry was far better at finger picking. It's two completely different styles of play so very tough to directly compare. Either way both men changed music for the better around the world.

  • @wireguy73 I don't know about Clapton but Jerry took only 2 guitar lessons in Palo Alto at Dana Morgans Music Store back in the sixties. He taught himself basically everything. Guitar,Pedal Steel,Banjo, acoustic, dobro, and the rest.

They are two different humans playing what they do best. No cut to Clapton.

  • @3272432724 But clapton had the exception of starting later in his life. He started in his 20s while Jerry was a young teen when starting. However, Jerry was most self taught (he even invented his own tuning of playing the guitar in an attempt to figure out some songs by ear until his cousin showed him the standard tuning and chords)

I undoubtedly like Jerry more, but I refrain from making an opinion on who is the "better" musician.

  • @wireguy73 ...all pay JJ..all hail JJ Cale.

  • @wireguy73

Well spoken, but Jerry was a more well rounded player, Don't get me wrong Clapton is one of my favorite players. But Jerry could play, bluegrass, blues, jazz, and rock n roll. All to a very high degree, Ahh both great musicians. But man do I miss Jerry,,

  • @wireguy73 jerry is the best

  • So, @bluesguitar1973, if you're a better guitar player than Jerry, then, in addition to your technical skill, there must be lots and lots of people who are moved by your playing (since, let's face it, technical skill really isn't worth much if you can't make music anybody'd want to listen to).

    What's that? There aren't?

  • There is absolutely no point in debating who is better--Garcia or Clapton. They are (or were) both masters. They both pour thier souls into thier playing for YOU. I can promise you that niether of them ever looked at the other in terms of who is better. You may find more joy in one or the other, but 'better' is not a real issue. Awesome!

  • Outstanding!

  • Jerry was great with the PIZZA TAPES, but I can't sanction that CLAPTON is better?

I'll be happy to debate you regarding the merits of Clapton vice Garcia..........

  • Jerry and Eric are BOTH GREAT.....ONENESS.....LOVE you guys....:) Blessing's, PEACE ,LOVE,Light! :)

  • Aug. 9, 1965 Jerry Garcia passed away.

  • Jerry Garcia, of Grateful Dead, died 15 years ago today.

  • all you people argue about finer points of smallish things and miss the beauty..

  • Jeez, if I had only a fraction of that talent!

  • Jerry and Clapton are sitting in a stew pot about to be eaten by cannibals. The chieftan tells the boys they each can have one last request. Jerry says "Hand me my guitar, I want to play Darkstar one last time". Eric says "In that case, eat me before he starts." Happy Birthday, Jerry!

  • @mghtyred LOL, Happy Birthday Jer indeed.

  • To say Jerry is a better guitarist than Clapton is an absolute joke. Clapton could smoke Jerry in his sleep. I am amateur guitarist who has played on and off for app. 15 years and Jerry is not much better of a guitarist than me. Sorry deadheads but that is the truth.

  • @bluesguitar1973 but jerry has an amazing imagination he is must more creative than clapton is

  • @bluesguitar1973 There's a lot to being a great guitarist. Technical virtuosity is only one. Clapton and Jerry both can be outclassed by many in that regard. But think about the soul of the artist that comes across through their instrument. In that aspect both Jerry and Clapton were giants. I am sure you are a great player but since I have not heard you, I can only doubt if you can evoke the entire range of human emotions that Jerry could with his instrument. Like a nightingale.

  • @bluesguitar1973

    well said, and I agree.

  • @bluesguitar1973 clapton was stuck in the blues, jerry was a million miles ahead of him creatively and I can guarantee you clapton could not pick like jerry.

  • @bluesguitar1973 HI bluesguitar1973! SO if Jerry was such a bad terrible musician, why did so many people want to play with him? (And I mean BEFORE 'In the Dark' i.e. 'Touch of Grey' brought such a resurgence in the GD's popularity) Tell me, is B.B. King calling you up? Bruce Hornsby? Branford Marsalis? Vassar Clements? If you are so good, please upload something for us to critique, that is if you have the guts.

  • @bluesguitar1973 ok,now you just made me fall off my ball (chair) lmfao,,,, you have no idea what your talking about at all,,there is no truth in any of your words... oops wrong, the part u said about being amateur is right im sure of that, lol,,,, dude get off the meth

  • I love so much classic rock.. but I can honestly say I hate Jerry Garcia.. He sucks

  • @Rockgod10210 you're pretty much a retard

  • only one guitar part instead of two as well. Only one Jerry too!

  • what a great show...great Melvin licks on this too! John K is rocksteady...and Jer with the 60's licks on the second solo!!!

  • where can you download this?!

  • I was at this show with my buddy we drove up from Baltimore! This was our 5th and final shpw of the JGB fall tour! Thanks for the download!

  • I remember this show. Chicago, Rosemont Horizon I believe. Very nice~!~!

  • ENJOY MY JERRY ROCKS.

  • I miss Mr. Garcia....

    Let the Music Sing!!!

  • He's like the dalai lama combined with a teddy bear, combined with a beat poet, combined with the most humble person in the world. He sure can make a guitar solo smile.

  • Thanks for the upload! Too bad mahballsarefine doesn't approve of this "Gerry" vid.

  • Das ist so great, mir kommen die Tränen . Jerry lives forever.

  • Awsome man! I was at that show... my birthday no less... Garcia was in fine form that night starting in with this little nugget... great to hear the audience again as they realized what a funky cover the night was starting off with!

If I recall there was one of the sweetest Shining Stars ever later in the show

Thanks for posting... here's hoping I can find the rest of this show!

  • @SwampYankee22 thats a sick birthday show.. my birthday as well but i was 6. I feel bad i never saw him. But hey his tunes are just fine

  • That grin! He was oblivious of his greatness, to him he was just having fun.

  • Jerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i may die tomorrow, but one thing im happy for in this lifetime, was that i got to see jerry garcia play many times. deadhead for life in this body and mind of mine!

  • Miss you HUGE Jerry - smiled al the way through this remembering the days...

  • love his cheshire cat smile at 3:37 when he is about to go into the upper ranges of his solo. There weren't too many pickers that enjoyed themselves more than him!

  • the fat man rocks!

  • @tiedyekeith the fat man always rocks, common knowledge.

  • I had a generic black on white bumper sticker for years that said, THE FAT MAN ROCKS....being thin, people would drive pass look in a wonder WTF????...always cracked me up....of course, the heads always knew what was up....

  • be KIND to ur mind

  • Can't wait to see Furthur with John....

  • huge smile and a few tears

  • My goodness! Check out the audience "noise" at 3:01. Feel the love. Thanx for all the notes and the spaces in between them, Jerome.

I don't think I have ever had that "being there" feeling as much as I do when listening to this. I give it billions and billions of stars ****************************

  • Saw Jer in Albany this tour. Rosebud failed so Melvin did a 10 minute kbd solo and blew the fucking roof off the place while Jerry was backstage. No way Jer was gonna top that so he came out and finished the song without a guitar-just sang. Played the Tiger rest of the evening. A bit of guitar history. Melvin was just unbelievable. Does anyone remember that?

  • Yep, I was there too... super kind show.

  • Man, wish I could of seen jerry live. Would of been amazing :(.

  • i saw him perform a few times. really changed me somehow. I remember not thinking much of him and then going to see the Dead in Seattle. This big fat old guy who barely moved had a packed football stadium audience just go nutso by merely saying "fire... fire on the mountain".

  • Too bad Jerry's vocals were shot for this one, he plays it better than Clapton, Would be five stars if not for the vocals.

  • Better than Clapton???

  • why is everything a competition????

chill out and relax, listen to the vibes

  • I don't remember what I said and it isn't worth searching, but this still sucks in my opinion

  • @hethradiah78 'Cause Garcia is BETTER than Clapton!

  • @hethradiah78 gettin awesome vibes on this one. i didnt even know it existed . i am QUITE pleased it does

  • Jerry does After Midnight waaaaaayy better than clapton

  • @lighteningboy

not even close. they don't even do the same thing.

    clapton is boring.

    THIS is music

  • @DoctorSapperstein This isn't boring? You have got to be kidding me. This is why people have different opinions.

  • THE BEST garage band in the WORLD! and the world is their garage! dammm ... never heard them do this one before...my ears are grinnin'

  • you gotta love that Alembic Tiger, what a priceless guitar

  • BIG SMILE....

  • thanks for putting this up.. one of my favorite late day jgb tunes,, they killed this tune at msg with David Murray on sax, I think it was the same tour,, yeah the jgb sold out msg, and nasau, and hartfoed and providence and....sure do miss em.

  • sorry eric clapton, you're great, but jerry garcia was better.

  • @gorgeoushammer it was an honor to have jerry take interest in your material, and 10x an honor to have him surpass it (a given...) and id say about 50x to produce a gem like this!

  • @gorgeoushammer

    not even close!!

    :)

  • @gorgeoushammer I love Jerry as much as anyone but it is not musically better than claptons

  • @gorgeoushammer awwwww c'mon gorgeous, which is better Red or Blue?

  • OK Jerry was unique and with the GD he was sheer take-me-higher magic. (The rhythm on this cut is fantastic!) But please cut the judgments or I'm gonna have to send you to:

Eric Clapton/ Steve Winwood "Had to Cry Today."

  • @gorgeoushammer Hahahahahahahaha! Sure he was...

  • every time i see a bar band i scream "LAY DOWNN SALLLLYYYYY" during intermission it is a rare brave terd who will break it out . spillin my beer for jer daily.

  • right on !

  • oooooohhhhh yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • eat ,Drink and miss Jerry!!!!

  • Just can't put your finger on it.

  • smokin!!!

  • I can make this look a lot better. I'm a professional colorist. Pretty fuckin golden stuff here. Need the uncompressed raw file though.

  • saw him play it in milwaukee

  • Jerry seems distracted by something off camera...it would be interesting to see..I think he wants Melvin to step it up or step in or something.

  • hey Jerry remember the words.....

  • dont ya ever leave

  • holy fucking smooth smooth shit!

  • ooooooohhhh mmmmyyyy ggoooossssshh

  • love the two step!

  • Love Jerry ripping the guitar for the last half of the vid, what a great cover. God bless you Jerry.

  • our memories will never die thanks to you who post this great stuff.Keep up the good work and give us all you can.We can never get enough of him.

  • i love jrb for many reasons. melvins mean on those keys and jerry seems to take his time on those solos a little more with jerry band he seems like hes havin a good time.he looks tired tho. love gdf

  • AAAAAAAWSOME groove baby!!! LUV IT

  • Great Video...! I was there the night that Grace Slic and The Jefferson played their very first public performance @ The Longshoreman's Hall in San Fransico. After Grace sang, The Greatful Dead performed on that very same night. It was shall we "Different" me being from Oklahoma. Oh don't get me wrong I had a Ball...! Great night and great talents all nite long....!

    two times...great talent, nice man.

  • One of my uncles was best friends with jerry

  • i was htere as well..did that whole tour!o jerry~you gave us all so much!i love you forver brother~aloha~

  • The baptism of Jerry: is it from heaven or from man?

  • Thanks for the memory I remeber this show like it was yesterday still got my stub from it. The security kept making people stop dancing but by mid set it was hopless and they let us enjoy.

  • Nope... it was Eric, Marcy Levy and George Terry. Cocaine was (amongst others) the JJ Cale song Eric covered.

Never realised how talented a guitarist Jerry was.

    Thanks for the post.

    LOL.

  • This was a great J.G.B. tour! I was at the M.S.G. show and Blues Traveler opened we were tripping our faces off, I think I'm having a flashback right now ; - )

  • Jerry has performed all the songs you've always wanted to hear and all you ]never wanted to hear. You could teach a college level course American music just from songs Jerry has been recorded performing!

  • I thought Eric Clapton worte this. Did jerry Do this one?

  • Jerry Band was a low key good time. Remember small shakedown street outside providence civic center!!

  • smokes clapton

  • he did more with his fingers than most people can acomplish in their entire life

  • oh, man...that smile!

  • The Fat Man Rocks!

  • Hell yah =-)

  • I love seeing posts on here from people who dont know who Jerry is. Imagine being a kid with so much crap music around and finding this great nugget on youtube.

  • Garcia Band was always a treat and us Jerry Heads always got it in spades. The scene was so much more mellower than the Dead scene it was a blast. This show was awesome and this was played late in the second set. It is great to see Jerry having a fun.

  • I was lookin' up this song (The Clapton version, specifically), and out of the corner of my eye I noticed this bearded God...I didn't think something so awesome could exist.

  • The communication of the dead is tongued with fire beyond the language of the living.

  • The communication of the Dead is plain and simple. If you get confused, listen to the music play!!

  • thank you jerry....keep on smilin

  • We miss you Jerry

  • The sun aint nearly on the rise

And we still got the moon and stars above.

    Underneath the velvet skies,

Love is all that matters. wont you stay with me?

    And dont you ever leave.

  • I saw Jery do this @ the garden 93? it was really great. Thanks for this footage.

  • Sweet..saw Albany that tour when his guitar conked out during "Lay down.." Very rare for that too happen. Had to tell crowd he'd be back in a little bit! Good times..Way I figured it we got a few more minutes of Jer..

  • Two days after i was born hahah. Garcia is ans was the best guitarist around.

  • My first show! changed my life forever, for the better. This show also had a smoking Deal as the 1st set closer. and a killer Don't Let Go and a Lucky Old Son.

  • Jerry lived ten lifetimes

  • Tends to happen when you've dropped alot of acid. Think I'm on my 14th. Thank god my life is finally sober, happy and moving in the right direction again.

  • never a Dead head but sure appreciate talent and imagination....rest in peace Jerry
