  • his music will live on forever

  • I hope this website will help! Let It Shin, Oh Let It Shi-e-ine!!

  • @pre10der76 Where in the world did you find this concert? I was at the Nashville show. Can the sound quality be improved. I want a copy. where can I get it and what is the cost?

  • Can't tell you how many times I played this song through the course of my life! One of his best!

He was one of the very few "voices" out there in the world with amazing insight and honest heart channeled through outstanding musical expression! He was (and is) a musical-and-otherwise brother of the soul to me.I miss him.

Three years ago today, the world lost a cherished voice...But Dan left behind a "Living Legacy" that will continue throughout the days of my own life, to the end of days.

  • I was at that concert. In the old Sam Houston Coliseum. Before he started playing, I remember him apologizing ahead of time about his voice not being up to par that night. I would have never known. What a voice. What a genius.

  • Wonderful song. He was where he wanted to be when he died.

  • Awesome.....music will never be the same without him..... and hio vision of the world and of even those beyond....

  • Fogelberg lived on Deer Isle, a coastal island very near Bar Harbor, Maine. His song The Reach is about the body of water called Eggemoggin Reach which separates the island from the mainland. In his song The Minstrel he sang of sailing on this reach and mentioned nearby Jehrico Bay.

  • Finally, some earlier DF work. I preferred his 'younger' voice (before it dropped in pitch). Only got into DF's music when I bought Innocent Age. His music was hard to get in Australia. I picked up 7earlier CD's on a trip to Hawaii (in 1991) and prefer his work prior to Exiles. Dan never made it to Australia. I planned to go over to the U.S. just to see him .... but I left it too late. RIP Dan .... IMO you were the greatest singer songwriter ever.

Thank you pre10der76 for posting this concert.

  • I agree with the last couple of posts-Dan was truly one of a kind and by expressing his soul so well he touched millions of others. I saw him at Red Rocks, solo, and it will always be a favorite memory of mine. RIP Dan, you were truly loved by many.

  • I also started listening to Dan from Home Free. I was in my little farmhouse in Northwestern PA and heard "To the Morning" on the radio. I was so memorized I had to call the station to ask who had just been on the radio. I can't describe in words, what Dan has meant to me. A soul so sweet and beyond the reaches. Love you Dan.

  • I was lucky to see him perform this song in '00 or '03. It was done solo and was absolutely riveting. He had a way of simulating the soaring classical elements through just his guitar. I love seeing all these clips from the '82 concert, at the peak of his commercial success. Thank you pre10der76!!

  • Notice that this is actually a beautiful waltz? Anyone up to waltzing this one? It's a slow waltz, so no excuse to get the steps wrong! :)

  • number two has to go to either Leader Of The Band or Leader Of The Band

  • The first time I heard this song was live on the '81-'82 tour i Greensboro, NC. Heard it again in Raleigh, NC in '04-'05. As endearing as ever. Started listening to Dan from his first 'Home Free'. No one will replace him.

  • Let me tell you, I don't cry... but this song gets me... damn... Why'd he have to go so young? I'm 26 and only got to see him once... But I got to see him play this...

  • Wow. Until now I had only seen Dan perform this song solo. I love the band's performance. I would love to go back in time and be at this concert.

  • Got to be his best....it's too wonderful for words!!!!

  • Forefathers is in my top ten favorites...but so are dozens of others, :)

  • I agree that choosing a favorite DF song is a daunting task, but this one has special significance for my eldest son and me, so The Reach gets my vote, Making a second place selection is impossible.

  • You're right, the best approach might be choosing your DF song according to personal significance. So I nominate Dancing Shoes, a tribute to my past love of 30 years ago, and Forefathers, a favorite of my wife and a tribute to all the generations to come.

  • The Reach is also one of my favorites (among many). Netherlands and Innocent Age are gems. Strangely, Rolling Stone was very critical of all his albums, and yet the music is beautiful AND timeless. He deserved better.

  • Thanks for uploading this great song of Dan's for us to listen to, and remember him by.

  • Dan's best song, and I was fortunate enough to have seen him perform it live at the University of Illinois some years ago. During his 1997-98 tours he dedicated this song to John Denver who had recently died in a plane crash...he said "we lost a good man". Indeed...we have lost 2 good men!

  • It's pretty bold to claim any one of Dan's songs as his best; how to rate so many priceless tunes? Still, this is a good one, and a great version.

  • YOu're so right-Dan gave us so many pricless songs!! It is so great to know there are others who feel the exact same way about Dan's music and extraordinary talent for making beautiful, timeless musical treasures. There will never be another to fill Dan's shoes for me. Gone way too soon...

  • I was fortunate enough to see Dan in concert twice at a small outdoor theater on the campus of Interlochen Arts Academy- 1999 and 2001. His father had been an instructor the camp at one time and it was Dan's first time there(in '99). What was amazing is that the concerts were just Dan, his guitar and his piano- no back-up singers or band but I don't think anyone cared or even noticed. A true test of talent is a live show and his talent shined! He played this song at the piano-one of his best!

  • The best lyricist who ever lived. We all still love you Dan.

  • a little bit into the song--Dan looks over at someone and says something--anybody guess what he is saying?? I always wondered what it was!!

  • "Bass"...it was too high

  • oops..."Brass"

  • I remember Dan's comment he made on this song, that he was so proud of it, and felt it was one of his best. I quite agree, it's a masterpiece. Yes, now Dan, his song, and the ocean he loved are one. Like everyone here, after 30 years, Dan is all I listen to and all I need. His music, voice, and face are a part of me.

It's really so good to be to talk about my obsession to people who can relate!

I miss him beyond words, thank G-d my husband is very understanding!

There will never be another Dan.

  • Hey,M. Just having a Dan moment! I second those emotions!

I loved the way he wrote. I don't believe there is a song, that I don't like! When Dan, wrote songs on things that he was truly passionate about, those where the songs with the most beautiful melodies and lyrics.

He really did share his emotions with us through his music. He gave so much of himself!

It makes me sad to say it, but there will never, ever be another Dan, he was so unique!

  • @ilovedgf Its like you took the words right out of my mouth!! I feel the way about Dan and his music. Dan is all I listen to--every day!! I never tire from listening! He wasa genius and did so many different types of music so well. I just really cant get enough! He has been, is and will always be my most favorite. I miss him too, maybe thats why I am "obsessed too!!!

  • @ilovedgf I so agree! My ex introduced me to Dan's music. He owned all of Dan's LPs, to-date, and played/sang many of the songs from Dan's songbook. For many yrs I was happily immersed in his music. When my marriage ended, the LPs went too. Dan's music was too painful a reminder of my failed marriage, for years! At some point, Dan's glorious music came back to me, and now my house is again filled with his beautiful sound. Goosebumps! You're our angel Dan, Thank you for all the beautiful music

  • The Reach-one of my favs, but then there are sooo many! Its funny but I really cannot pick a very favorite song from Dan because all his songs just wow me so much!!Even after 30 yrs, his songs are still fresh and timeless to me-I listen to dedicated Dan-Ipod in my car every single day and I never get tired of these amazing songs-Dan's voice, musicianship, melodies, lyrics are just so amazing and pure genius, and he was so darn handsome too!!!!My heart still aches at his loss..Glad I could vent!!!

  • I have been a fan for about the same amount of time and I agree with you. His music never gets old! It always gets me right in the heart and soul! I miss him so much! But venting does help!

  • Hey T. Just got my Dan pin from the PCF. It's really lovely!I have it sitting next to me, while I watch some of my favorite Dan videos.I promised myself I wouldn't cry, no such luck! Dan and The Reach are now as one and that is the way it should be. I had read a review on Amazon after Dan's passing for the TIA.The person writing the review, looked at TIA as Dan writing his epitaph. It seemed strange at the time, until Jean played The Reach, while scattering his ashes. What insight that person had.

  • As I said, when I got my pin, I got teary-eyed, but I was so proud to be able to wear it! When I'm sitting on the beach, looking at the Atlantic Ocean, I feel Dan is part of all that great blue water. I don't know as I'll never cry again over him, but that's okay too!

At least when we cry, we are remembering him in our hearts! He deserves that and more! God bless you, Dan!

  • I can now imagine Dan sailing forever on the Reach! How great is that! Love this song and the MAN!

  • Thanks so much for sharing this video. I have always wanted to "see" him do this song.

  • Jean Fogelberg has sent another email via Living Legacy. She has requested, if you can around 6:30 pm EST.take a moment and mentally join hands together and take a moment of silence or play his music in remembrance of Dan.Jean says, she will be playing The Reach and picturing him sailing. That would been my choice too!

Jean if you stop by here, we are thinking about you and sending you love and respect. We all loved Dan!

I am sending out a spiritual hug to all,

    Asquare

  • I can't think of a more fitting song or a more emotional moment. How much love will be "winging" its way to Dan!

Jean, we will be with you! Dan, I hope you are with us all!

  • Yes...across the globe, we will be focussing our love and prayers and thoughts on Dan and Jean today. I hope Dan knows how his fans adored his art and respected him and th choices he made in his life.

  • I was at the tribute in Sellersville,PA. It was awesome. Jim Photoglo performed this and it was a emotional moment for him and everyone in that theartre. He had said, that there were so many songs that he had done with Dan on stage, so he narrowed it down to about 20. He did a melody of songs, Starting with The Reach and ending with Old Lang Syne. The most emotional part of the evening. Tom Hampton should get a big shout out of thanks,he was the organizer and producer. Great guy and musician.

  • A wonderful and memorable night! How great to honor Dan on his birthday! But very emotional as we all sang Happy Birthday and Gambler. Kudos to Tom Hampton and all the performers, they were awesome! Dan, I know you were there with us! Bless you!

  • anyone heard anything re: the tribute concert? Greg

  • Greg you can get info on the upcoming Tribute Shows at the Liing Legacy website. Click on News and scroll down.

  • My favorite Dan Fogelberg song! I never had the opportunity to see Dan in concert, so this is a real treat. Thank you so much.

  • I got to hear this in concert..(his last tour : ( I remember the out of body experience in hearing this man perform. I am forever grateful.

And how handsome! I kept borrowing my neighbor's

binoculars to see him close up. And the energy and the concert went on for so long. I, like a many woman dreamed of this man

    Vee

  • Did Dan know how many women harbored a secret love for him in their hearts? It hilarious how he brought us together. It takes a very special man and artist to do that. His music still makes my middle aged heart soar with possibilities.

  • Writingtome: one time at a Dan concert(Red Rocks Ampitheatre, CO), women were lined up along the street when his tour bus arrived. And I saw them all giggling and fussing. I think he knew...but was so humble, didn't think much of it. : )

Yes, his voice makes my middle age voice happy too.

    Thanks

    Vee

  • I saw Dan twice in concert and will never forget how great it was just to hear him sing. He will always be my favorite. My heart is forever broken for the loss of him. I can't even begin to know the pain his wife must be going through. God bless you Dan.

  • Ditto, Ditto, Ditto, Ditto, Ditto!!!!!!!!

  • Wonderful. Eases the loss. Thank you!

  • Love coming back to this!I have been following DF career from the beginning and through the unfortunate painful end. This is the time in his career, I can't seem to get enough of!! He was on fire, with his songwriting. Love The Innocent Age! TIA and Nether Lands are two very special works. He was truly a musical genius!

  • Love this video, love this song, love DAN FOGELBERG music.thanks for posting one of my favourites.5 *****

  • this song and the entire Innocent Age album is a master piece ( I have alway called it Dan's White Album) I was in Maine a few years ago and found Penobscot Bay...and Dan's island from a distance...very rewarding and fulfilling. Miss the guy.

  • Love this moving video. Looks like Dan is playing his 12 string. It's almost six months since lovely Dan passed away. It's hard to believe. I wish he was here. I wanted to hear him play and sing at age 90 (not that he'd wanted to of course). I truly hope his spirit/soul is flying free, unbound. Blessings to lovely Jean on the long haul forward.

  • Wow, this is another amazing addition, I can't believe I missed it before. You are one class act to share these awesome vids with us. Thanks so much once again. BB in FL.
