  • You must be a vegetable to not laugh at least once during any of these episodes.

  • the only reason youor saying its bullshit is because you have money to give away if thats ever needed. Martial arts is used to protect yourself and possily others around you, using the necissary amount of force needed to get the attacker on the ground and in a safe manner, and keep them there if further support is needed. And if they ever did pull a gun, it isnt theirs at that moment.

  • Modern martial arts are just sport

  • Its not murder if THEY attacked first. If someone attacks me or my loved one, I will hit until they don't move. I won't risk my life or the life of my kid bc Im worried about hurting some douche who attacks us. Laws arnt always just, nor do they always protect the victim.

lol Love the show though.... laugh EVERY time :)

  • @55Freya it is still manslaughter, and you will go to jail, for a very long time. and then who will protect your love ones. what they mean by use only the force to control the situation, is knock them out, or get them down and tie them up, problem being, is against a gun armed assailant, it is still damn near impossible for most.

  • @sephirothjenova999 Thats they whole bullshit issue...if someone attacks ME why is it considered manslaughter or even assault if I fight back? Thats crazy. Thats the issue. The police arnt there...its just you and an attacker...sorry but I would fight back.

  • @55Freya under the law you are legally allowed to fight back and defend yourself, depending on what state you live, your allowed to fight back and defend yourself if the other guy throws the first punch and hits you first and you also have the option to press charges without getting in trouble, even if you are in school, their "zero tolerance" policy is bullshit, i prefer not to listen to it.

  • @SAMFlSHER40l7 lol I live in Canada, where you are not allowed to keep a bat by the door or in your room bc its considered a weapon. You are only allowed to hit an assailants knees...or you will be charged with assault yourself. lol its crazy! I think if someone breaks into MY home or attacks me or my family on the street its not my fault if they get hurt while I defend myself or family. Laws are not always just nor do they protect the victims...

  • @55Freya If the attacker no longer represents a LEGAL threat to your safety or those of others you have a special relationship to (kids, spouse, etc.) and you continue with force, then you've broken the law. They correctly stated the law of self-defense. Perhaps you should read it yourself.

  • @BloodofPatriots As long as someone is in my house and moving, they are a threat. What if I stop and he gets up and kills me? Or hurts my kids...should I feel good bc I followed a bullshit "selfdefense" law? Sorry but my kids arnt worth the risk.

  • @55Freya You better look up whether your state is a "Castle Doctrine" state or not. Its not about your kids, but your politicians. Anti-gun politicians are against the Castle Doctrine and do, in most cases, require the potential victim to retreat rather than use force to defend himself or herself. Interestingly enough, these same politicians tend to employ gun-carrying bodyguards while voting against CCW permits.

But the fact remains that if you cross the line its a crime.

  • @BloodofPatriots lol I repeat I live in Canada:) My issue is that laws like that are crazy and shouldnt be in effect at all. Punishing anyone for protecting themselves against an assailant is bullshit. Laws should protect the innocent and punish the violent criminals, but thats not what they do...thats a serious issue..especially in Canada.

  • @55Freya But weather its against the "law" or not, I would protect my family no matter what. Whats a bit of jail time knowing your family is safe vs risking their lives to save some court time?

  • @55Freya I feel sorry for you. Canada is AWFUL when it comes to individual liberty, including the right of self defense. Section 13f of your Human Rights Charter outlaws free speech that "offends" any group, even if that "offensive speech" is absolutely true and can be proven. Also, did you hear about Jessie Sansone of Kitchener, Ontario? He was arrested, questioned, and strip searched because... wait for it... his daughter drew a picture of a gun in school. Sad.

  • @55Freya Thats just it, if you continue to attack to the point of killing even after the attacker is incapacitated and no longer a threat, that would be considered a form of manslaughter. Its just the way it is. Murder is wrong on any level, even when it occurs when defending yourself.

The exception would probably be the case where killing the other person is the only option, but rarely is that ever the case.

  • Tits on youtube!

  • God damn idiots penn and teller. There is sooo much more to martial arts. Discipline, tranquility, physical training, ballance. This is achieved through training and pain infact pain is probably the greatest way to achieve those things

  • Oh, how I love these guys.

  • I felt this episode was slightly biased. They showed 2 frauds and a delusional person and decided that all martial arts were bullshit. Martial arts taught right are good for: stamina, speed, power, cardiovascular endurance, can help you lead a longer life in good health, will improve your willpower, character, discipline and confidence AND of course are essential for prizefighting. They are useful in any career path, not only in fighting for money though. Self-defense is a whole different story.

  • Hotora86

P&T show generally suffers from bias & gets in opposition who are idiots or frauds to further prove their point rather than the stronger arguments.

That being said this show is great at addressing McDojos & such

  • @TheTvrulesthenation You're probably right. They like to generalize a lot and use straw man arguments. I guess this is the first time the generalization went way too far for me and actually made me disagree with the whole statement - that martial arts are bullshit.

  • Hotora86

Thats the nature of the show entertainment to those who agree, annoyance to those who don't. I for eg thought the episode on Animal Rights was way off....though it did address PETA

  • 7:19 XD

  • "I am highly proficient in the martial art called Bustacapinthatass: 40cal style!"

  • I don't know why I keep watching these. Is it because I'm curious if P&T are going to use real evidence and logic? I love the fact that in the video game episode, it was decided that kids were unlikely to become killers from playing violent video games (a conclusion I agree with), but here they decided that kids will kill from fake fighting.

They interview 1 critic? They dismiss all of tai chi by talking to one nut? Randi and Derren Brown are much better skeptics than these two clowns.

  • traditional Martial arts have always been bullshit!

  • Best ending of an episode. Period.

  • The guy who took wrestling in school always won his fights. The UFC really solidified my suspicions.

Is Sensei Creampuff accepting applications for Drunken Gali Gali lessons?

  • 2:30 I want to join this martial art lesson! lol

  • Sensei Mark's Isshin Karate class = Textbook McDojo

  • I just recently took martial arts class and this episode bring good points.

  • Ending was hilarious

  • I guess after all these years and all those expensive worthless belts...I can claim to be an expert. If you want to survive, practice running. wanna be the thoughest guy in ER? In a wheelchair? Join a dojo.

  • LOL @ Pregnant lady

  • Pen and Teller are funny comedians but are also weakling who probably never even played a sport. so they make fun of those who take pride in using their body for more than hookers and cigars

  • @kanepeteysam awww, wannabe ninja got mad? ;__;

  • BTW... That martial arts instructor that broke the boards did it the stupid way. Another reason why the boards break with the grain is because you are supposed to use your ARM instead of your HAND! What an ignoramus. LOL!

  • Im 15, have never taken martial arts in my life, and i have kicked the shit out of two "black belts" at my highschool this year alone. Shits stupid.

  • @Reptiliia Stop kicking the shit out of people, you are shit and stupid.

  • When I took martial arts it was always made clear that the forms were for looking fancy in competitions and the only self defense taught was "RUN, and if you can't run here's how to break their grip and then you run." It was a fun way to get some exercise and it impressed my classmates. Nice straw man there, my friends.

  • and the traing of martial arts could save one from that. and btw i did never feel like "le vctim"

  • i started study karate when i was a kid and did stop studying it when i was 16. and the reflexes that i did develope during these 7 years has helped me during unfortunate occasions. during theese occasions i defended me pretty good thnx to the reflexes. now, i really admire penn and tellers bullshit and ive agreed on every single pisode. but this episode i must say is BULLSHIT! remember that fights without any kind of weapon involve still can injure one very badly,

  • @sebb462

i think its bullshit to assume that your MA training gave you added reflexes. especially counting adrenaline rush, being physically fit and being damn lucky doesnt take years of specialized training to do azing feats.

i would think the reason you wouldnt agree with this video is because it hits too close to home. to agree with what these guys are saying you'd have to admit the countless hours of training and money spent may have been waste. no one likes being shown to be a fool.

  • @Bigpussycat5 first of all i have no problem in admiting that i have done anything foolish, if i think that i have been it. in fact, it is very constructive to admit it. maybe you and many others dont dare to admit it but i do. second, this is NOT "too close to home" as you wrote. i couldnt care less about karate or any kind of MA after i quit it. third, how do you know that training doesnt improve your reflexes? have you ever tried it? and WHEN did i say that it takes years???

  • @sebb462 sorry say that i wrote "after many years of stydying MA" etc... but i didnt mean that you have to train many years for achiving that. im not from any english country so sometimes i epxress me in the wrong way.

  • @sebb462

"how do you know that train doesnt improve reflexes?"

that the point! i dont. you made the claim it did for you. my point is that how do YOU know it wasnt just adrenalin, natural physical fitness and pure dumb luck that made everything work out for you?

you sound more offended than anything with this come back response. i certainly didnt mean to offend you but there is something call the Placebo Effect. where we convince ourselfs that a treatment is worth while and working even

  • when it maybe killing us. i dont think MA is a total waste. its more constructive than having kids hang around home watching tv and getting fat. I just dont see it as this self-defense promoting activity as much as a side show and spectical. it looks cool to see people kicking and flipping and breaking boards with their face. but everyone would be fucked if they had a gun pointed in their face.

  • @Bigpussycat5 what did offend me was that you wrote "no one likes being shown to be a fool". with that youre implying that i am a fool and also pointing out that i dont like to admit when ive done something foolsih although you dont even know me. if you dont whant to offend me try just to think about how you put up things. anyway, let me rephrase what i was trying to say. first of all lets just say that i think that one is probably born with some kind of a "standard" reflex.

  • @Bigpussycat5 it could be good or bad. if its good then, along with some luck and adrenalin rush, you could come to defend yourself pretty good. if its bad, well... so however what i am trying to say is that martial arts helps, effectively, to "shape" your basic reflexes and defense in a way that makes them more efficient and effective. the result would be that you will get a better chance of getting hit less times, which is what any sane person whants, right.in what way does MA do this?

  • @Bigpussycat5 in MA, at least in karate (which is what i did practise), you practise different types of deffensive patterns over and over and over again. when you do this youd dont do it against the air (like its said in the show) but with a partner (for example one of the two punches towards the face and the other does a upward block etc). so after having repeated those patterns during various sessions your brain learns to react with certain defensive movements to certain offensive punches,

  • @Bigpussycat5 kicks or whatsoever. this movements incorporates to your reflexes. now, in a real fight you dont and you probably dont can defend yourself in the same way you do in the fights during the training sessions. but the "pattern" and the movement is still there, incorporated with your reflexes. the same as with the fighting tactics that you have learned and the respiration that helps you control the adrenalin rush(its really hard though). they are all more or less there. and this is

  • @Bigpussycat5 is what helps you to get an overall better defense than if you wouldnt had had any training at all. so for example when this guy started to attack me this last time i got shaky as hell, thanks to the adrenalin right? but automatically i started to breath a "little" more calm, this "little" actually helped me to focus a bit more, and this "bit more" is very important, at least it was for me in that fight. so anyway when this guy attacked me i started defending me within

  • @Bigpussycat5 those "patterns" it all happened automatically whithin those patterns whithout really thinking. after the happening i did feel that it was effective to have learned what i had learned in karate and therefore i find it useful.i mean, it sure must be more effective to actually know what you are doing, to know how to punch correctly, how to give a real good punch so the fight can end as soon as possible; rather than punching randomly whithout knowing what youre doing in both the

  • @Bigpussycat5 offense and defense. i am not saying that with MA youre untouchable, martial arts just helps you getting hit less and one hit more could be very conclusive. but that doesnt of course either mean that you will always have luck. of course you could be unfortunate as with anything but that doesnt mean that you shouldnt have a a backup plan. better have a plan than none if you know what im saying. by the way "but everyone would be fucked if they had a gun pointed in their face" the

  • @Bigpussycat5 first thing i wrote was "now if somone points a weapon at you, just give up". i am just talking about if somone attacks you whithout any kind of weapon. sorry for all text but its the only way in which i can express myself :P

  • now if somone points a weapon at you, just give up. give them what they whant. but if somone jumps right up on you and starts punching you etc it would be good to have studied any reliable martial art, so one could defend one self more effectively. no that one is not going to not ge a punch but youll probably get less. after many years of studying martial arts one develops defensive reflexes and it is theese reflexes that will help you pretty much in a

    authentic fight.

  • Is just me or there are a lot of boobs in those videos ------->

  • The industry is as full of BS as any other. It's all marketing and flash covered up with philosophical BS. Still if your doing it for a workout or wanting to participate in the sport of it, then really whats the problem? Sure there is safer ways to workout but if it's what you enjoy then all the power to you. Just know when s*** hits the fan, turn tail and run. Only fight if you need to because chances are all that fancy training isn't going to help you when you get stabbed or shot.

  • The invention of guns permanently took all the fun out of combat. :-\

  • All I could think about when I saw the old crone doing the laughing bollox, was that 70's lolololol hahah lolol hahah lolololololol hahahahahahah lolol hahah lolol hahah

  • And also, a gun is fantastic, IF you have it with you, and IF you are able to bring it to bear, and weren't, for example, taken by surprise. Firearm skills and carry are just as important to self defense as martial arts, but neither is an automatic win in every situation.

  • While I generally agree with Penn and Teller, it's undeniable that a no-frills combat system like Krav Maga (wiki it. It's what most special forces use) would give you a serious advantage in a street fight, since it doesn't shy away from eye gouging, crotch kicking, and other "practical" moves.

I also notice that the only argument they had against the practical martial arts guy was "you students might be psychos/running is better". Maybe I don't WANT to run...

  • Robotic Vagina??

  • He's right the only way to stand up to criminals is to be a big black guy.

  • Jean Claud VAN DAMME!!!

  • My karate sensei ALWAYS said that whatever you do it's best to win a fight by 100 hards, so even the martial artists agree with the run sentiment.

  • It's a good point, anyone can learn ju jitsu and then use it to assault you, if they have a gun then even if you knock the gun clear "somehow" they might choke you then shoot you anyway.

I still think jujitsu works though, having that hopeless feeling you get when you actually get wrapped up can be a real downer.

  • I agree that Martial Arts in North America are a Scam However in some special cases lets say deep in enemy territory and your face to face with a terrorist and all you have is your fists your gonna thank the training you received at base camp. just saying...

  • I have a black belt in Run-An-Hide-O ^_^

  • We spent about a million years living as a scavenger who came along after a lion or wolf killed and ate something cracking open the bones and eating the marrow.......And running away if the predator came back. That's right we stole when we could and ran when we had to and now we eat like kings and never have to touch a dead animal.

  • hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side

  • @NotAG4yName "you don't believe in the Force, do you?"

  • boards and sticks dont hit back

  • I keep getting distracted by the breasts in the recommended section!

  • I am a highly trained expert with a black belt in the use of a Colt 1911 Commander handgun :D

I can easily defeat any one of these morons, and the handgun only cost me $700.00

The .45ACP +P bullets are about 60 cents each, and one bullet from this hand-cannon usually suffices.

  • @nyctreeman I hate you! I want a 1911.... /cry

  • @nyctreeman lol y not just run around with a bomb strap to ur chest and just blow every one up. and pretty sure a homemade bomb is cheaper then the handgun.

  • Kind of a contradicting message. So, teaching young adults Karate gives them a misleading and false sense of security, but at the same time that dude claims that if they would get hit in real life, they'd "freak out." So which one is it? Will teaching them Karate give them an unrealistic ego boost, or will it just turn them into whimps? I usually like this show, but this episode is sub-par IMO.

  • @regelemihai that was the point they were trying to make though...that misleading sense of security is misleading because they aren't actually experienced in real fighting. These middle class white (in other words, pampered) kids often find themselves at a loss when they finally do get in a real fight and get the hell beaten out of them, because they can't take a punch. Some defense methods are good, others truly are bullshit...this tiny pregnant woman isnt kicking anyone's ass.

  • Well, that doesn't make any sense. A trained person in a certain discipline is not better off than another who isn't trained?! How does that make sense? Training doesn't make you a Bruce Lee, but it certainly gives you an advantage over someone who hasn't acquired the necessary fighting skills. These skills aren't gonna come from nowhere--you need to learn them.

Similarly, that pregnant woman will be much better in a fight compared to one who isn't trained. I dunno how anyone can contest that.

  • @regelemihai I think the argument was that if your willing to spend all the money to acquire these skills you could just buy a gun, saving time and injury. Still nothing wrong with knowing these skills if your willing to learn them. I'm with them about the industry being a bunch of flash and philosophical BS. When it comes down to it your just hitting people in a more efficient way. I'd rather just get to the point like the one guy they showed.

  • @mikethies0 To hit people in a more fficient way is not in any way a downside; if anything, that's the advantage you get from practicing. To better equip yourself with the necessary methods of self defense is not on par with doing nothing and pretending you'll have an equal chance of surviving a fight with someone. It's like saying that those who practice the guitar won't play it better than those who don't.I just can't see the reason behind saying that practicing fighting won't give you...(cont)

  • ...an advantage in a fight. It jsut doesn't make sense.

Sure, a gun would be preferable, but that's another discussion.

  • That fucking idiot is teaching a course on how to beat the shit out of someone and use gratuitous excessive force, and calling it self-defense. He knows NOTHING about self-defense. Defending yourself is NOT killing someone, you dumb fuck! Your method of so-called "self-defense" is only applicable to rare and very specific situations that your students will probably NEVER be in. No, not even if they are a cop!

  • @shrikechan

Even Penn said in the video that 1 in 200 Americans experiences violent crime each year. It's silly to think that you live in a protective shield, when in reality crime effects almost every single one of us. If, God forbid, you're faced with such a situation, you need to know how to protect your life; not to care about the life of that worthless worm that dares to attack you. Whether you end up killing him or not, is not your problem.

  • @shrikechan I disagree. If you get assaulted on the street, it means everything including the laws of the country you're in are of secondary importance at that moment. Your survival is paramount. You don't consider the assailant's rights or safety, you just keep hitting him until he's no longer capable of causing you any more harm and then you get the hell out of there.

  • HAHAHAHAHAHA*stare at her boobs* HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA

  • for the record: Regilio Tuur the then world champion olympic medal holder to be boxer got his ass royally handed to him by some no name random chinese guy who happened to know a couple of moves.

anyone who thinks someone trained to fight isnt going to be a better fighter is retarded.

    Pen and Teller are retarded.

these guys are really becoming the kings of the false premise, making this quite possibly the most hypocritical show on TV.

  • Three crank pseudo-martial artists all cliched morons with party tricks and a nice act not real senseis

  • HAAAH! Somebody tells the truth about martial arts! Awesome!

  • Comment removed

  • Only Penn and Teller could truly convince me that the martial arts have little value.=) I love it.

  • Damn, they blur nipples like no one could know what the heck is bak there. Why can´t it those be shown if they are beautiful and get you horny...oh, I forgot, hypocritical censorship...

  • @TheSRalston no kidding hey? how did naked bodies become such a horrible thing? we all have boobs, penises and vaginas whats the big deal? oh yeh the church XD

  • @MrROTD Maybe...I really wanted to see those nipples, lol!

  • @TheSRalston the youtube user that uploaded the show did it. the show never blurs shit out

  • LMFAO I LOVE THE END

  • Penn didn't explain that Martial Arts can be seen as fun and exercise. They can have self-defence applications but they are also largely sports these days. Martial arts are practised by armies around the world.

  • first, mop the floor. now, wax on wax off daniel san!

  • Comment removed

  • If you want a martial art that is directly applicable to self defense situations, nothing compares to JUDO.

Not to mention the fact that judo teaches you a skill that you are far more likely to need throughout your life - the ability to fall without injuring yourself.

  • Absolutely priceless.

  • i must hate to be their neighbors

  • "Boards don't hit back"

  • I don't know what that old lady was doing, but it's not tai chi.

  • to a soon to be MILF hahahahahahahaha xD

  • mike should break a metal bar over his head

  • I have to say that not ALL of this is bullshit. I agree that the Qui Gon Ji or whatever the hell it was called, is bullshit. I am a student of Aikido and traditional Jujutsu, which are what's known as "Budo". They are NOT sport. They are very much rooted in do or die combat. As my moniker states, my 2 chosen forms have served me well in my environment. You just have to throw out the bullshit and keep whats useful and PRACTICE with different types of people. And remember NOBODY is invincible

  • he is right baout osmething the first time you fight the first hit you freak the fuck out

  • As a black belt, I must tell you that taking lessons isn't going to turn you into a fighting machine. Sure, your sensei can kill a person with one hit. But he's invested massive loads of time to get there. And you must also have it in you. Be conscious that it's just sports to you.

One note, if you're considering a dojo, and the sensei alks about qi, don't be deterred. Most instructors don't mean hocus pocus with it. In martial arts, qi usually refers to the optimum mental state for fighting.

  • get the fuck out. Boxing is effective, They picked the biggest bullshit ones and went with that.

  • Mike must be AMAZING at minecraft!

  • sooo does anyone else want to punch that laughing lady in the face?

  • Marc MacYoung is a BADASS.

  • Look up Marc MacYoung on Amazon. Great stuff. His book on how professionals (bouncers, bodyguards) end violence quickly is good; his book on avoiding/evading/escaping in the first place is even better, for men or women. Can't say enough about him.

  • @74Benedict You're so damn right!

  • My self defense is parkour!

  • @J0shReed Same here!

  • I didn't get the last part. what was it referencing/parodying??????

  • 'a soon to be MILF?' LMFAO

  • Ha! I was watching this in work, so natch had YT in the background, mousing over the chrome icon to bring up a mini window! How surprised was I at 02:28 when there were three topless women on the screen! Bring up full window, pixelated... Try it! The smaller screen size compresses the pixelation of the naughty-bits, making them totally visible! Brilliant! :D

  • penn is fat

  • That ending.

  • Hahahaaaa!! This topic seems to have produced the most resentment from the subject/population being lampooned so far by P & T. I suspect everyone watching this series has been fine with whatever was being mocked until they were like, "Woah, wait a minute bro, I do martial arts and you can't make fun of that. The martial arts I do are different; they're serious/important/minty" or whatever the fuck.

Get over yourselves. There's bullshit associated with every human endevour.

  • It's not all martial arts, it's only martial arts taught in the west. They only focus on fighting and especially making money through belts.

  • It's bullshit if it sells mystical powers or abilities to fight off a horde of attackers, and the situations that are legitimately life-threatening it will have the lowest probability of working. However, if it claims to be either art or sport, would you call dancing or soccer bullshit? Personally I would never be able to stay on a treadmill long enough to get much cardio, and from the looks of it Penn can't either. I would scientifically say all of them are expected to outlive Penn's fat ass.

  • @rmtaks And while it may only be useful for defending my ego, at least I won't have to dump a glass of milk over my head every time some shit-talker rolls up.

  • The subtitle of this show should be "STOP LIKING THINGS I DON'T LIKE".

  • These are not martial arts like kick boxing or kyokhshin karate or jiu jitsu, these are MCDOJOS so of course they are bullshit !

  • does anyone else get that feeling like, "oh man, i dont know if i can watch this" its just so depleting of the human soul u kno? ....i love it though

  • Actually Karate and other martial arts isn't bullshit... It's just there's 2 kinds of martial art. The "Sport Martial Art" and the "Real Martial Art" and the sport is just for competitiveness, disciplin, good health and can increase your reflexes and muscles. So if you wanna know if it's bullshit. Find a real dojo.

  • @goozbaghali... so says someone who has probably never been in a fight in their life... right?

  • @screenpuller Not true

  • that ladie stefani is kind of hot!!

  • it's not a black belt factory either I only have a brown belt, their is no belt testing fees no equipment fees etc. I know to run if a gun is held to my head, we're taught to not be stupid and if we have to fight, fight smart.

  • I've been in Karate for 5 years now and I would agree with many points in this video. But it also depends on your sensei. My sensei says fighting should be your absolute last option, he teaches a mixture of traditional and modern self defense, he does his best to instill in us not to attack unless attacked first,

  • those are some nice boobs :)

  • and honestly, I agree that marital arts are very dangerous. I currently have broken a toe, a rib, and cracked my neck on several occasions. I love it though, it keeps me in great shape and I feel i really am learning how to fight. MMA has actually helped me become less aggressive and more confident. in the end, I see it as any other sport that you love, you're gonna get hurt playing it, but that's just part of the game.

  • I am An MMA fighter. And before people criticize this video, there is a lot of truth to what these guys said. Most martial arts taught in this country are bullshit. It's nothing but flashy nonsense that goes right out of the window in a real heated situation. I learned this the hard way when I joined MMA. I took Karate for years and thought I was the shit (almost a black belt) but I went in there and got my ass kicked. Lesson learned, the only way to learn to fight is to fight. not punching air.

  • @ChaosKirbyoLight But you could say that about any applied skill. If you just swing a baseball bat without at least getting some live pitching as practice, yes you would be at a disadvantage when you see a good live fastball coming at you. No matter the system, you still have to spar in order to improve. Now I agree with the fact that sometimes the "traditional" trappings get into the way of actual teaching. Our schools still teach in the same manner as 150 years ago.

  • @ChaosKirbyoLight so some schools may have to update the way they teach. Some people may like the traditional setting, it depends on the student.

  • This has to be my least favorite episode of Bullshit. Personally, I've been to three different martial arts classes throughout my lifetime, and in every one, we were always told to run away in a dangerous situation if at all possible. Also, saying that there's no point in taking martial arts because you're probably never going to need to use it is a bit like saying there's no point in taking fencing classes because you're never actually going to have to fight someone with a sword.

  • @BubbaHoggit ...they said that in this episode though, the only reason why it's bullshit is for self defense, taking it for good health, discipline, or for the fun of it is perfectly fine (which again, they said)

  • @rex3453 They kind of contradicted themselves when they said tai chi was bullshit, seeing as tai chi is done almost exclusively for good health. And the lady they found was a complete wackjob. They also pretty much painted senseis as really lazy guys who suck off other people's devotion or discipline, which has never been the case for me, and they may have discouraged some parents from putting their kids in martial arts for fun by saying the kids would get to cocky or eager to fight.

  • This was a great video. So much of the Dojos are Mcdojos now in days. I did karate for 5 years and right before i got my blackbelt, my school got bought out by the ATA. ATA is a load of BS and will give u a belt after paying a few grand. There are many great schools out there now but there are far more McDojos. After my training i read a book on krav maga and I believe that it will help you in a fight more than anything else.

  • japanese word for suckers:吸盤

  • :39

    Iggy Pop?!

  • My own pointless contribution: I taught Karate for a couple of years. The spiritual stuff is nonsense. There is no Chi or life force or spiritual energy. I think it does help teach discipline and respect, though that depends on the student. The belt and grading system, at least up to black belt, is bullshit; it's more going through the motions and trying to maintain the interest of the student than anything.

  • @hungryman211 (cont) The idea of chi or focus, to me, is not a spiritual thing, but a physiological one. Putting focus on a strike is about timing; learning how to keep muscles relaxed to allow others to move quickly, until just at the point of striking, tensing muscles to increase the weight behind the blow. Reflexes, speed and knowledge of effective counters can also develop through repeated training, but no more than with boxing or any other western martial art.

  • @hungryman211 (cont) One last point: Martial arts can also be hazardous and I would discourage parents from having very young kids involved (As a teacher I sometimes felt more like a baby-sitter at times). I started when I was quite young and, after about 5 years, started developing painful back spasms. I can't be sure that Karate was the cause, but it did involve a lot of fast twisting of hips, often quite forcefully. This was one of the reasons I eventually gave it up a few years later.

  • Simple rule for martial arts:

If it is not a SPORT it is BULLSHIT.

Wrestling, Jiujitsu, Boxing, Muai Thai, Judo, MMA, and Kickboxing are sports. The good thing about sport martial arts is that you exercise and you get to practice your technique with someone. Just like Soccer, Basketball, andFootball everyone can enjoy and compete in these combative sports. All that other stuff is unrealistic Bullshit, and a waste of time.

  • goozbaghali

I'd agree there but at the same time be wary of making students think they will manage such moves in threatning situations. Friend of mine does Judo for years & i've seen him get into a fight or two, his stuff definitely helped him by a mile.........on the downside he did get bitten & had to get blood-tests.

  • @goozbaghali If its not a sport its bullshit? Really, So I guess the training the Military use to KILL their targets quickly and efficiently are completely bullshit, huh?

  • @voidshadow In a sense yes. Military training is useful if you are in the military. Otherwise, it is BS and a waste of time. How often are military skills necessary in civilian life? Almost never.

I was mainly referring to the mystical and traditional martial arts such as Tai Chi, Karate, and Wing Chun.

  • @goozbaghali Fucking Penntards. Would you rather see security guards shooting down every little guy that goes aggressive rather than at immobilize them? I almost always question what these guys show. I think the only thing they're right about is supernatural stuff (esp, ouija boards, religion, etc). Everything else in this show is literally bullshit.

  • @goozbaghali

Then again, once you train solely for tournaments and competition, you emphasize getting points and winning bouts under the protective veil of rules and regulations. For example, look at BJJ. Sure, it's great to be well-rounded and have a good ground game. However, aiming to always end a fight with both of you on the ground isn't practical in most self-defense situations. What if he has friends? What if he bites your calf when you have him in a arm bar? (cont.)

  • @HipposHateWater what if a piano falls on your head?

    what ifs are bullshit.

  • @Whisper6911

If you didn't question and constantly try to find answers, then stagnation occurs. This is true of pretty much anything out there. That's the only way any knowledge or craft will not only survive, but thrive. Asking questions and seeking answers spawns and spreads far, far less bullshit than blindly crotch-riding someone who only has a half-assed understanding of what he's teaching.

  • @Whisper6911 I agree. I mean, "what if the most likely scenario occurred"? Yeah, THAT would be ridiculous...

  • @goozbaghali

(cont.)The sport is optimized for 1-on-1 combat, and rarely [if ever] are the practical self defensive applications taught.Boxing isn't much better either, with it's utter lack of grappling and any strikes that are not punch-derived. Judo is only throws and sweeps. However, most MA-turned-sports have one great advantage: fitness and general athletic ability. If you want to be truly effective, you have to be able to combine the knowledge of one side and the conditioning of the other.

  • @HipposHateWater Boxing is pretty effective, my dad was a doorman or bouncer if you like. He has been in more fights than anyone I know. I was talking to him one day and asked if he had ever been in a fight with a boxer, He said "Yeah, when I was worker the doors at such and such a place. He broke two of my ribs." "So what did you do?" "Pulled his coat over his head and kicked his face in." LOL As for the athletic side of MA there is not lot to it. Boxers fitness training is far superior.

I don't doubt that Boxers can do some significant damage, however their whole fighting style is engineered to drag on the match for spectacle. (Targeting non-vital areas; huge, overly-padded gloves; etc.) The boxer may win the battle and get more punches in, but chances are, he won't win the war against someone who effectively melds the best of both worlds.
