  • Is stock refinishing necessary for lamenated stock?

  • @timewaster6991 No, you wouldn't want to refinish a laminated stock, maybe just clean it up good and maybe apply some clear varnish to help seal the stock

  • Great job! all you need is a lot of elbow greese and patience with this kind of project. I would like to do mine in satin finish. Thanks for the video.

  • subscribed!!!! Where did you buy yours I think im going to get one

  • Nice job; Looks great. I refinished one the same way. I left the wood its natural color and just put some tung oil on it and knocked down the shine a little with 0000 steel wool. Looks excellent.

  • @79thOVI Yeah it came out really well, thanks 4 watching

  • Really nice job on the rifle. Can't really improve on what you did, so I will do the same with mine.

Bought three of them from Cabela's, one is a 1939 Tula, the other two are 1942 Izhevsk. Pretty much in fine shape and nearly identical, but the Tula's butt stock is 3/4" longer and it has metal plates around the sling holes. This one will be mine, the other two will go as gifts to my brother and a good friend. We look to start a small M-N club in S. Louisiana with them.

  • @TheDoug76 Well ya'll are gonna have alot of fun with 'em, they're great rifles. Thanks 4 watching

  • Great job! Where did you order the butt plate?

  • @915greaser Got it off of ebay

  • Hey brother first off let me say nice job on the finish. I also bought my first mosin on friday and it was covered in cosmoline. I personally used a Blow Dryer and it took a little less than an hour to get clean. By far the hair dryer is the least time consuming imo.

  • @kcroc44 Yeah I used a heat gun on a couple tough spots on mine

  • Really nice!! I just got mine i want to dura coat mine kinda like nutafancy but ireally like this one great job!

  • @dmoreusmc Thanks, glad ya liked the vid

  • It hardens...M'kay... Mr Garrison.

  • @MEERKATmichael Oh yes it does!

  • nice looking gun!

  • @fishblade2 Thanks

  • Thanks for posting and sharing and your Mosin Nagant looks really really good. Great Job!

  • @ratagris21 Yeah it came out looking good, thanks 4 watching

  • Beautiful gun

  • @bassmaster690 Thanks bro

  • Very good vid. The Mosin looks great. I'm sure they didn't look that nice when they were built.

  • @fatfred74 Thanks, it came out looking pretty good, I was happy with it. Thanks 4 watching

  • i keep hearing the trigger pin comes out easily but both my mosins never had that problem.

  • Looks GREAT! You got me so inspired that I can't wait till I order and receive mine! Where do you get "Tru-Oil"? Never heard of it..... (Home Depot, Lowe's?)

  • @Dreemwever I get mine from Academy sports or the local gunshop

  • @Dreemwever Cabelas carries it, search for item IK-212448

  • Thank you!

  • @djlouiemtraxx Thanks 4 watching

  • When you stained it did you do one side at a time? How did you prop it up while staining it?

  • @djlouiemtraxx Ididn't stain it, I used Tru-Oil which just adds a nice shine to the wood and hardens almost like a resin, but I did each coat all at once by hanging the stock up with a wire hanger, I just bent it to go through the mag and screw holes that were empty since I had it disassembled.

  • Beautiful rifle! I think you've convinced me to do the same thing to mine.

  • @444QUAD444 Very cool, its a good way to get your Mosin looking good. The Tru-Oil is great stuff

  • Looks great. I used 8 coats of tru-oil on mine and I really like the way it turned out. Nice job :) I tried posting a video of mine to this but I'm not sure how to do it?

  • @76Stankfinger Yeah I love Tru-oil, it's great stuff. I just approved the vid response. Thanks 4 watching!

  • Really really good job

  • @Darkcanyon505 Thanks, I think it came out pretty well

  • What grains did you use to sand it?also what does the cosmaline do to the gun? Looks great by the way

  • @TheMHandDSfan I started with a 250 grit and moved on to a 400 grit to finish it off. The cosmoline is basically just a preservant that soaks into the wood and metal over time and when the gun heats up when fired it seeps out and can cause problems like jaming up the bolt or the cartridge in the chamber

  • What grains did you use to sand it? Looks great by the way

  • It kinda sticks to the jacket I went back to the steel In combat I what it to silde on and off quickly. But you did a great job, Its a great rifel I have 2 of them one is a finn 1895 from the ruesso-finesh war of 1938/39 they made it in to a sinper dam can it shoot. It shoots almost as well as a wen-model-70 sinper and Im a gunsmith

have fun with it. I put a scope on mine but a very good one have fun later.

  • beautiful rifle, love what you did with it. I had a quick question what did you use to get the shiny finish on the stock, i know you mention it but i cant quite make out what you said. I would appreciate it.

  • @daunderdogg It's called "True Oil" by Birchwood Casey. You can usually find it in most gunshops & sporting goods stores, sometimes Walmart even has it

  • @NeverEnuffAmmo thanks for the reply, helps a lot. By the way i forgot to ask if you had cleaned the stock beforehand or did you not need to?

  • @daunderdogg I just sanded the stock before applying the True Oil

  • lol shiny stock are very nice but the second you put a tiny ding in it!

  • cool

  • @175yam1 Thanks bro!

  • Is there an easy way to tell if it was a sniper rifle?

  • Where can I get the rubber butt for the stock??? Also the ring clips for the forestock?? My son is in the process of refinishing his Mosin because he saw your video. Also would you do anything different?

  • @Alwayscarry1 The rubber buttpad u can get at most gun supply online stores everything from cheaperthandirt to ebay, I got mine on ebay they had the best price. As for the rings, not sure, would probably have to google it and see who has 'em, I know I've never seen a set without the stock. I've always wanted to do a more tactical mosin, pout on a synthetic black stock, bent bolt handle scope & mount, cut down the barrel, but I'd onlly do that to a mosin in bad shape, otherwise keep it original

  • @Alwayscarry1 Check this wesite out, it should help u determine if yours is a former sniper ....

  • Where can I get the rubber butt for the stock??? Also the ring clips for the forestock?? My son is in the process of refinishing his Mosin because he saw your video.

  • is ammo for this gun expensive

  • @hulkbuster1026 Not at all, I usually order it online, I buy 440 rounds ammo cans for around $80 to $90 bucks depending on where I order.

  • Just pick up a 91/30 today, saw you vid on dis-assembly which will be a big help, and that turned out beautiful I hope my looks half that good. Btw where did you get that butt pad? Will be using mine as a deer rifle

  • @tschuler3 I got the buttpad on ebay, can't remember the seller, he was offering the buttpad & the pack of 5 stripper clips for $15 plus free shipping, was a pretty good deal. Glad the vid helps, they're great rifles, but sometimes people either just don't want to or are affraid to take apart old milsurp rifles, seen too many good rifles fall apart because they never were cleaned or repaired because people were concerned about "keeping it original" I say for $125 dollar rifle have fun with it.

  • @NeverEnuffAmmo Thanks for the quick response, I got mine for $97.41out the door at a gun show my dad got one a month ago for a little over $100 a couple months ago and have been wanted one almost as soon as I saw it. I don't get people wrapped up on original, on these guns, others I could see I want to rebuild mine to suit my purpose not the Soviet Army's.

  • @tschuler3 Yeah they're great to just do whatever u want with, for the money they're great to even experiment on and see what u can make of it. This one I have now I just wanted to refinish the stock and keep it fairly stock but with a couple updates, but I want to get another one, and make a "Tactical Mosin" just for the hell of it.

  • @NeverEnuffAmmo Just confirmed payment on my pad and stripper clips from redbirdgunparts on ebay, I was going to put an ATI stock on it but I think Im just going to put a scope on it and leave it alone. Im considering an SKS with a dragonov stock for a fighting rifle. That one will have to wait a little while I gotta get my wife a .380 bersa and my self a .22 pistol for gator control when I go fishing in South East Texas

  • @tschuler3 Yeah u should wait till the next Mosin to put the ATI stock on .... lol

SKS is a great rifle, all around a good rifle for defense plus it's capable of using for hunting if u needed to, definitely worth having one in the collection.

  • @NeverEnuffAmmo yeah Im wanting an SKS bad I saw a few at the show today and had too walk away reluctantly I hate budget's lol

  • @tschuler3 I know what u mean, I was at a gun show today too, down here in South Tx, and had to restrict myself alot more than I wanted to.

  • @NeverEnuffAmmo I had about $150 budget for this trip got my gun some beef jerky and some fudge for my wife lol

  • @tschuler3 Sounds like a good deal for everybody all around ..... lol

  • @NeverEnuffAmmo yeah it was a pretty good trip my dad even got some things for his aristica 7.7 jap rifle, bayonet and aircraft sights

  • @tschuler3 Does it still have the mum?

  • @tfoshohoe on the aristica, yes its there but was half assed ground off so yes and no

  • @tfoshohoe the misslindzy comment was mine didnt realize I was logged on to my wifes account lol

  • @tschuler3 SUUUUUURRE haha.yeah mine also bummer=(

  • @tschuler3 oh hey not being rude but its arisaka=)

  • Man you did a outstanding job best mosin i have seen

  • @tfoshohoe Thanks alot bro, glad u liked it, it definitely came out better than I thought it would!

  • Have you gotten it out to the range yet? I was curious about sight adjustment, I have read a couple things online about taking the front sight assembly off and drilling a hole them replacing the pin with a set screw any thoughts on this?

  • @LivebytheSig Haven' gotten it to the range yet, what I've heard is that if your going to use iron sights, and the front post is still in it's original position from the russian armory that it should be left alone, but again, who really knows, it's going to depend on the rifle, some of the old Mosins were more accurate than others & may have been sighted in better as well. The set screw option is probably a viable option, this particular one I'm wanting to leave original except for refinishing

  • @NeverEnuffAmmo it looks great anyways, I did that with my Yugo sks, the only difference i did was I took a wood burner and burned the serial number in the side of the stock. I am considering doing a video of it soon (as soon as I can get a video camera) because I havent seen any on this. It is a very accurate weapon. I will let you know when its up so you can take a look at it. Thanks again for the vids and keep them coming.

  • @LivebytheSig No problem bro, and definitely let me know when u get the vid up!

  • Looks bad ass bro... great job!

  • @GunznPoker I appreciate it bro, it came out better than I thought it would!

  • Very Nice, looks beautiful.

  • @OilTheGun thanks alot bro!

  • Who, and why would someone "dislike" this?

  • @jackmeoffer I have someone (don't know who it is) who watches all my vids just to give them a thumbs down. They've been doing it since mid summer, I don't know who it is, or why they don't like me, but whoever they are they're at least giving me a view for the vid, and they do it so soon after I put the vid up that they have to be subbed to me to know I put up a new vid, so I don't care ..... lol

  • @NeverEnuffAmmo Your Mosin project has me thinking I want to do one. Any tips on where to buy one? This summer I would see them at gun shows, but was not interested then. Now I think it would be a great winter project to get one cleaned up. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

  • @jackmeoffer Yeah definitely gun shows are the best place to get them, cause you'll usually get the best price there, other than that order one online from jgsalesDOTcom u can get one for $79.99 , now u have to pay for shipping and an FFL transfer fee to have it sent to an authorized FFL in your area to pick it up, and if u want one with a good bore they'll pick out a good one for an extra $30 bucks, but even after all that your still looking at less than $150 bucks.

  • That looks amazing! I love the finish you put on that wood handle, it looks so shiny! and to think you can even get a mirror polish on that, wish I had your skills lol. I love how you made this gun into a project and in a way made it your own. Makes it that much special and sentimental. Blood sweat and tears infused into any product is the secret ingredient to any outstanding product :p Great vid, awesome end results/project!

  • @jeffjuice3886 Thanks bro, I had alot of fun with it, and it turned out better than I thought it would. I love fixing, and tinkering with stuff, and I actually used to refinish guns for extra cash several years ago, forgot how much fun it was!

  • Nice work! I like to finish off with some 0000 steel wool to give it a satin finish, but the gloss really looks good on a Mosin.

  • @ODgr33n Thanks alot bro, I really was suprised it came out looking as good as it did!!

  • Great Job dude! Unfortunately I had to do something similar to my M1 Garand. It turned out perfect. I would have preferred leaving it original, but the previous owner did a bad finish job on it so it gave me a fun gun project.

  • @CampfireTalk Yeah I love gun projects, this is the first one I've done in about 2 years, so it was alot of fun!!

  • Very cool! ★★★★★

  • @DocTacDad Thanks bro!!

  • Lookin' good, man! Nice!

  • @DemonHide Thanks, it came out better than I thought it would.

  • Mosin Nagants rule!!!

  • @sailingmanuel Yeah I love 'em, can't beat 'em for the price!

  • Tactical Mosin sounds awesome .

  • @TheGunGarage20 Yeah I'm hoping to pick up another Mosin at the next gun show coming up to start making a "Tactical Mosin"

  • @NeverEnuffAmmo Sweet, loocking foward to it !

  • ☆☆☆☆☆

  • @007TheReaper007 Thanks bro!!

  • @SOFSEC1 LOL ....... yeah I know what u mean, at least the good thing is u can pick one of these up for around $100 bucks!

  • great end result, looks fantastic, good work matt

  • @thomassmyth65 Thanks alot bro, it turned out pretty good!

  • that is one fine looking mosin, great job if and when i finaly get a mosin i will use the same finish as you used it looks awsome.

  • im getting mine tomorrow whats the best way to take off the cosmoline

  • @Rorona550 Well there may be better ways than what I did but I just used Hoppe's solvent and alot of scrubbing, I like to use a medium or hard bristle toothbruth, just dip it in the solvent and scrub, just make sure to take the rifle apart first so u can get all the areas covered in cosmoline. What works really good is using a hard bristle barrel brush sized for a 12 gauge on the chamber, it the perfect size, then a good .30 caliber brush for the barrel.

  • @videoenthusiast23 Yeah the cheapest I've seen 'em is $69 but that's rare.

  • that is one truly nice rifle. i was thinking about refinishing my springfield 67E 12 ga because i found out that they are not really worth a spit but i couldn't find out how to take it apart so i guess i'm going to be heading to the gunsmith pretty soon

  • @duemamay Well if u get it fixed u should definitely make a project out of it, should like it'd make a fun project.

  • Nice finishing job on the stock Matt, it looks wet, beautiful :)

  • @GUNeRAG Thanks bro, it really came out good, alot better than I thought it would!

  • looks gorgeous

  • @YokoWenis Thanks bro!

  • Looks beautiful man!

  • @DangerousDude2010 Much appreciated bro, it came out better than I thought.

  • man thats sweet! made a cheap gun look expensive.

  • @INTOGUNS1 Yeah it looks pretty good, thanks 4 watchin bro!!

  • Wow...that stock looks really nice. Good job!

  • @qwikslvr74 Thanks, I was happy with the results!!

  • You did a excellent job on the stock, Really looks good. Can't wait to see it in action.

  • @biguy525 Thanks bro!!

  • @videoenthusiast23 Yeah it was really easy, and came out better than I thought it would, if u ever get a Mosin (they're dirt cheap) I'll walk u through how to do it.

  • Wow, that really turned out nice! Great job. Beautiful rifle.

  • @glynn72 Thanks alot bro, it turned out better than I expected.

  • looks good mat! what grit of sand paper did you use?

  • @crippycrippy I used 200 grit to sand the whole stock down, then used 400 grit to lightly sand inbetween coats of True Oil. Did u ever get that Mosin?

  • @NeverEnuffAmmo cool.. i have a rem. 870 that i'd like to do that to.. no havent gotten anything lately.. going for the ar next.. but probably after the holidays cuz kids have a long list this year lol

  • @crippycrippy Oh wow for some reason I was thinking U said something about getting a Mosin ...... lol , Sorry bro, your like the only guy on here I know from B-ville so I was was thinking it was u, I know it was someone local to me, cause they were talking about getting it at Johnny's True Value in Harlingen.

  • @NeverEnuffAmmo lol yeah i havent bumped into anybody from down here besides you bro.. im sure theres couple of more fellers around.lol.. ohh i remember i had talked to you about the glock 23 or 22.. must of been that.. have u tried masseys range yet?

  • @crippycrippy No I haven't yet, but I really want to get over there, it's really close to my family's house, I heard they sell year memberships pretty cheap I wanna pick one up. Just between work and everything else I haven't made it over there. I did just find their website about a week ago, but I really wanna take the Mosin and the AK over there, it definitely the closest range to me for rifle shooting.

  • @NeverEnuffAmmo yeah it is really cheap .. its a good place .. they have couple of different set ups.. i think the longest he has is up to 5 or 600 yards..

  • @crippycrippy Yeah I really got to get up there soon.

  • @MrKatphish Thanks bro!!

  • @TheAmericanprepper Yeah I really like it, the more I look at it, and hold it the more the butt pad grows on me.

  • youtube fails again! i cant post it as a video response for some reason. i tried to do it and thought it worked but its not showing up here. i tried to re-do it and its not even listing the video in the choose a video part! ill pm you a link.

  • @mxf7010g8k It's working now.

  • soooo, i did this about a month or so ago. ive had the video up for a while now but i think ill put the response to here. i used tru oil also and its great.

  • @mxf7010g8k Yeah cool bro, definitely attach it to this vid, I'd love to see it!!

  • @NeverEnuffAmmo i did it but it isnt showing up, i ll do it again. ive got like 3 videos showcasing the refinishing job but ill just do they upgrades video because it tells about everything i changed.

  • Wow I am going to have to try some of that Tru-oil. So nice and shinny!

  • @Mrcaffinebean Yeah it works really well, I love that stuff, the more u use the better it looks!

  • @NeverEnuffAmmo I'm definitely using on my next gun project it makes that Mosin stock look nice. If/When I do I'll attach it as a response vid.

  • Great job! looks fantastic, keep it just like that. Trick out the next one you get. The oil looks fantastic that you applied to it. Do you sand between coats with that?

  • @tim12161974 Thanks bro, yeah I think I'm gonna leave like this, it looks too pretty to mess with. With the True Oil I lightly sand with a 400 grit inbetween coats, I've seen some people just put on coats without sanding, but it doesn't look as good.

  • Looks great! Take some Flitz to that Bolt! Will make it PoP!!

  • @Lookinformemarbles Yeah I'd love to shine up the bolt, I wasn't planning on doing it because I was going to get a bent bolt, but now that I'm planning on leaving it the way it is I think I'll put a little elbow grease into shining up the bolt.

  • @NeverEnuffAmmo There is a guy on ebay if you send your bolt he will bend it and send it back!

  • @Lookinformemarbles Yeah I've seen that guy, in fact I think there are 2 guys doing that on there, that's what I was thinking about doing, I think he was doing it for $39.99 or $49.99

  • Looks Great Matt!!!

  • @MadBadVoodo Thanks alot bro!

  • She looks nice! I love mosins.

  • @filo4life11 Yeah, once u get your hands on one, and realize what a great rifle u got for around $100 bucks, u start to wonder why u don't have more of them ..... lol

  • Looks really nice dude. Good work:)

  • @xxFRANKENZTEINxx Thanks bro, it came out better than I expected.

  • ★★★★★

  • she is a beauty! I want one to restore probaly a M44 or a M38. I want a 91/30 to build.

  • @willwood487 Yeah I really want to get my hands on a M44, would love to clean one of those up like I did this one!

  • Very cool!

  • @ristin59 Thanks bro!

  • cool vid man

  • @pjicleanair420 Thanks 4 watchin!

  • Wow that is a nice looking rifle. I need to get a Mosin. Can't beat it for $100

  • @txmalcontent Yeah once u get your hands on one, and see how much rifle u get for the money, you'll wonder why u have been buying up every one u see ... lol

  • Amazing look, very nice job! Sweat dont cost much, but what a great finish!

  • @cadrician Yeah it came out really nice, alot better than I thought it would. Thanks 4 watchin bro!!

  • Sarco bent sniper bolt...srsly, even if your not going to scope the rifle, it makes life so much easier shootin your nugget

  • @DaytonaRoadster Yeah the bent bolt is really something that just makes it so much better, that straight bolt really takes awhile to get fast with.

  • @NeverEnuffAmmo ya, its also is harder to use since u get less leverage
