@Mr1wd No, it takes a LOT longer than that. Often it takes up to four seconds for a shift. And if you're moving at between 5 and 15MPH, the computer keeps yanking the transmission out of gear and dancing between first and second gear. I've nearly gotten into accidents several times because I'm stomping on the gas but the car won't move because it's busy jerking back and forth between gears like a confused twelve year old.
@Mr1wd From 2009, second generation Fortwos were delivered with improved software that made automatic gear changes both smoother and faster than earlier models. The software, in the form of a free ECU upgrade was also made available for 2008 second generation cars, along with a new battery in certain cases
If a smart had the dual clutch like the new vw cars. IT would shave 2-3 seconds on 0-60, Or another way to shave time but waste a drop of fuel is to get a turbo. I wish there was a mod to get the clutch to actuate faster.
@1501HP yea and your gto is a muscle car, meant to go fast, this is a smart car, meant to be economical and efficient, not fast, loud and fun. but i still think this little car is kinda cool, throw a street bike engine in there, make it work and you got a 200mph smart car =)
@ken060693 you also forgot the smart car is less expensive, less expensive to maintain, less expensive to insure, and doesnt have any batteries that have to be replaced after 4 years. Not to mention if something goes wrong in a prius... good luck.
i bed to differ... getting 19mpg city... so unless this POS gets 76mpg thats not true. plus i can have 4 people on board and i wont get crushed if i crash
Wow, the comments on this video...all I've got to say is good lord almighty this thing is as slow as a Geo. Those shifts are so nasty, why the delay? It's probably decent for the price it is (Only thing cheaper is what - a Kia Rio?) but I'd never drive one. Too tiny and too slow (but you could replace the wheels with donuts XD I had to).
Who would drive something that costs a fortune to fuel? I'd rather have money to buy other things I want than pissing money away on gas. Silliness. The smart is actually the safest subcompact economy car on US roads. So if someone wants the best MPGs they can get for the cheapest price, the smart is IT. PS, the smart costs $19,215 fully loaded for the convertible. Cheapest convertible in the US as well. :-) It's about $15k for the coupe nicely equipped.
My Town Car gets 19MPG City and 30MPG Highway, and I got CAR around me! Plus the power of an 8 cylinder with the reliability of rear wheel drive. I will pay the extra 10-20 bucks in fuel a week to have a real car thanks. It all in your taste, that is why they make different cars
Bullshit. There's no way you're getting 19/30 MPGs in a Town Car. You miscalculated. There is no reliability advantage or RWD over FWD. Most of my vehicles have been high mileage FWD cars and none have had any problems related to being FWD. Apparently you're unaware that rear differentials go bad on RWD. Beside, the smart IS RWD. Do your homework. Also, if everyone drove a Town Car, the roads would be so overcrowded and begging for more oil. Bad logic my friend. Think beyond your own wants.
Hey bud, Im not looking to pick a fight here, RWD (front engine, not mid engine like the smarts) are easier and cheaper to work on than FWD. CV joints go bad faster rear diffs can last the life of a vehicle with very minor repairs. I am getting 18-19 MPG thru town, and 28-30highway. Ask anyone else who owns a TC, Grand Marquis or Crown Vic. My logic isnt bad friend. I work on cars/trucks for a living, I am not sayings I'm always right, but I KNOW I am with this...Thanks!
True, CV joints don't typically last as long as a rear dif. I'll give you that. RWD is easier to work on as well. Fair enough. I've never heard of any TC, CV, or Marquis getting more than 24 or 25MPGs on the highway though. Not even the newer 3.9L GM and 5.7L Chrysler V8 engines with cylinder deactivation get 30mpg. Either you're pressing the wrong buttons on your calculator or your trip computer is malfunctioning. :-)
Well, at least you agreed with some things. I got receipts in my hand here from my last tip to Toronto. About 300km there so 600 round trip. My TC holds 70 Liters of fuel. On that tank I can get 856km to one tank. So that 1s 12.1L per 100km witch when converted to MPG is a hair underr29MPG on open highway with the cruise set at 120kmh. Thats with the receipts in my hand, 2009 Lincoln TC 4.6L. In town it could be a bit better, but I am getting better mileage than my buddy's '05 Jimmy 4.3L. LOL
The most accurate way to calculate fuel economy is a lot easier than that. Next time you go the gas station, fill the tank and set your trip odometer before starting the car. Drive any distance you desire before needing to refuel. Make a 2nd trip the gas station. Fill the car again, note how many liters it takes to refill. Divide the distance on your trip odometer by the number of liters it took to refill. DO NOT ROUND the distance or liters. Include the decimal. This is a very accurate method.
I get 22-24.5 MPG @ 75-80MPG on my 96 Town Car. I put 700 miles on it a week and have calculated the mileage & gallons.
Differentials, Planetary Gearsets, & Torque Converters go bad quite often on FWD cars up north where people excessively spin their tires in the snow. FWD cars do have higher failure rates and those type of trans still can't handle the duty & abuse of a RWD trans. Thats why we don't yet see FWD Ford F350's or Ferrari's. But theres some good FWD cars out there.
I live down south, where snow/ ice aren't issues. I think it depends how the vehicles are used and treated, not to mention the design of the components. My Dad's '03 Ranger needed a new rear dif. @ 75k miles. He babied it and drives very gently. Meanwhile the FWD Plymouth Acclaim I abused in high school lasted 200k miles without any drivetrain issues. On the other hand, the '97 Mercury Tracer I bought from an old lady with 35k miles needed new CV joints because of a crappy suspension design.
my aussie spec stock 451 turbo does 0-100km/h in 9.8-10.4 as an average on the g-tech pro... im hoping when it's run in and i have had it remapped it should be good for 0-100km/h in mid 8's... interestingly though the 1/4 mile time of the turbo is much quicker i did 16.5 and backed off @ 300m
Hi, do you have a coolant temp indicator in the usa version of the fortwo? i don't see it on the display, but in Europe we do have it. (also diff display)
In my experience the car isn't at redline when it's shifting. It's sort of in limbo with the clutch engaged while it seems to be pondering what to do next for long seconds between first and second gear. Picture a slow child holding a round peg and staring at a board with two holes in it, a round one and a square one.
The car takes 10,000 hours to change gears.

Hmm ok, but it can be nice to know if the water temp is warm, before you put the pedal to the metal. An oil temp indicator would be even better.
Smart4two 3 years ago
The 2008 models use a Mitsubishi engine with an aluminum block, so it's ready to go nearly as soon as you start the engine.
foxmajik 3 years ago
To top it off, the smart's USB 2.0 upgrade will make it shift even faster!
Neonspinnazz30 2 years ago
Hi, do you have a coolant temp indicator in the usa version of the fortwo? i don't see it on the display, but in Europe we do have it. (also diff display)
Smart4two 3 years ago
Yes, but it only displays when there's a problem. There's no need to continually monitor coolant temperature on a normally aspirated engine.
foxmajik 3 years ago
OK! I think smart can make the car a little faster, when it shifts little earlier/quicker from 1st into 2nd. Now it stays to long at redline.
