ricky skaggs and keith whitley are from kentucky, tony rice and ralph stanley are from virginia, and earl scruggs and doc watson are from north carolina, jimmy martin and lester flatt are from tennesee and john hartford is from new york city, go figure. those four states are world renowned for the best of the best though without a doubt!
I can understand your respond below. People from the hills are good people for the most part. What I don't understand about this younger generation they always have to use that four letter word as part of their vocabulary. When I was a kid and I was herd using that word my dad would beat the hell out of me.We also went to Church every Sunday.
this song is for anybody from the hills! wherever you go they are the same! good people that will feed you if you are hungry, help you if you are in need and shoot you in the ass if you try to take something without asking!
i dont know if you call this bluegrass or country.... but it certainly AINT the crappy country music on the radio today with its depressing and cliche lyrics and lack of creativity!!!!
this is that true eastcoast shit here my friends reminds me of liveing deep in western North Carolina on top of that mountain i grew up on in the sweet land of dixie!
Using that kind of language i can believe you grew up in western north Carolina. We here in Texas can make a point without using that word, That S word!
I always loved these boys. They were always a couple of my very favorite. No matter what they performed it was so very well done. The songs they sang and wrote tell me that they must have either been raised back in the hills or knew a lot about it somehow. Sure am sorry that they are not around anymore. So many of the old ones not on the Opry anymore as they have passed on. RN
@Angryrnmedic Lester Flatt was born and raised in Sparta, Tennessee. I drive through there about every other week. It's a pretty part of the country and is still a friendly, tiny little town. He was the real deal.
I must be the odd one out, born in the UK, transplanted to NZ in '73, started learning banjo in 2008, and now back in the UK.... I'm 48, but I've got Earl's book and now I can hear the tunes I have to learn... thanks to those that put these wonderful sounds and videos up here...
This reminds me of visiting my relatives farms and milking the cows and doing farm chores. It was a wonderful time because being out there with my cousins wasn't work, but fun. They'd put on the radio at night while we kids took turns bathing in a washtub and we would hear Flatt and Scruggs and Bill Monroe and Jimmy Martin. Wonderful times growing up and lots of room to run. Another band I like is the Out of Town Boys and you should watch their videos. They remind me of the old boys back home.
Great track !! How many of you hard-core fans out there own a copy of their legendary LP entitled "The Complete Mercury Sessions". This LP features the same band line-up + many of the exact same songs which featured so brilliantly & uniquely in the band's famous 1950s / 60s Grand Ole Opry TV Series - also now available in 10 full DVD volumes on the Shenachie label. Both of em - LP + DVD series - A real treat !!
@fetermcblues: the secret... it's freestyle... play it by ear. "you can't teach this kind of music, its done by alot of playing/messing around" - my professor "there's no actual chords they wrote down that they read and played, everything is done by ear and memorization"...
This was the best Bluegrss band ever....bar none. It had the best balance of musicians. Lester Flatt was the best lead singer. I love all of bluegrass music, Bill, The Stanleys, Skaggs, etc. F & S were the best. You might disagree, but you can be wrong if you want to!! (just kidding on that last part, not really)
Flatt and Scruggs; "Bury me IN the mountain". I can tell when someone covers this song if they learned it from this original version or the Bluegrass Album Band's version; "Bury me ON the mountain."
@riseofdixieland13 I used to live on 20 acres up by the panhandle of Idaho just outside Springdale, Washington in a log cabin that I help build. It really does hit home.
@1Bluesboy1 this brings back memories of visiting my grandparents house about 20 miles outside Lexington, NC at their farm in the Blueridge Mountains. Sitting in the living room watching HEE HAW, PORTER WAGGONER, and THE GRAND OLE OPRY on the TV at night after helping out with chores and eating supper.
The first version of this I ever heard was the Bluegrass Album Band one. It's interesting to see how a talented group like that hears a song like this.
I love those hills of Virginia. All of Appalachia is spectacular, but something about the Blue Ridge mountains speaks to me more than the smokeys. Is it just me or does the Blue Ridge side seem to have kept more of the pure Appalachian mountain culture while a lot of the Smokey Mountain area east of VA and NC seems to be going more "NASCAR and Country Music" and less Appalachia bluegrass?
Then again, I guess I'm biased. ;-) Hope I didn't upset anyone.
You mean west of VA and NC? Yes, I agree with you, Carrie Underwood has taken over Nashville. Bluegrass is still alive and well in VA and NC. You might as well sneak MD and WV in there also. Oh and dont forget about East Kentucky.
Some of their performances are available on d.v.d. (Vols. 1--8) from The Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum. . They are really magnificent !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great bluegrass. Come see the blueridge mountains, God's beautiful creation. If you come to the Station Inn in Nashville, you can sat in some the seats that were taken out of this tour bus. Great place to hear some picking.
F&S are the best Now - Check out "The Out Of Town Boys" videos. They sound a lot like these guys esp. on I'm Waiting To Hear You Call Me Darling. Best repro I've heard.
