This movie is very respected, but you never see it on any "best movies of all time" lists. This *IS* one of the best movies of all time. Hence, it is underrated.
That's when Sean Connery took a break from working on James Bond films and doing Alfred Hitchcock's "Marnie" before he did the next James Bond film "Goldfinger".
Thank you so very much for uploading this. I'm working on seeing every single film directed by Alfred Hitchcock. This helps, since I've never seen Marnie before.
haha, this is the first time, after seeing this movie quite a few times, that I noticed it was Alfred Hitchkock briefly in the hallway.... I think I only noticed as someone told me that he always made a cameo appearance in his movies... Love this movie.
There are a lot of 'problems' with this picture, but many of Hitch's pictures have lots of problems and still work. The insurmountable problem of this one is not the fake backdrops, but the fact that the Sean Connery has more sex-appeal than Tippi Hedren, when the story demands it should be the other way around.
love marnie's yellow handbag in opening scene. Hitch and Herrmann genius,
Tippi said some type of "falling-out" between her and Hitch, either during or after filming, he told her she would never work again, and she said she didn't. It was on Biography.
(contd) he was a genius at suspence and this film had it all. I think Grace Kelly would have been the wrong choice for this film, she didn't turn it down as people always assume, she married the prince of Monaco and could not leave the country.
I think Sean connery is good in the role altho I always think hes a bit , dare I say wooden.
@TheChrissy48 I agree with the Grace Kelly comment. When I first saw the film, I disliked Tippi and preferred Grace. But now as I watch it years later, I actually don't mind Tippi and think Grace would've been all wrong for the film.
I love this film thanks so much for uploading it. Someone made a comment abt how Hitchcock alwys put himself in his own films. In the old days extra's who appeared in crowds etc were hard to come by at 1st he did this as a crowd filler then his fans spotted him and loved it so he made a point, for a bit of fun to appear in every film possible. But it was always at the start of the film so as not to distract the viewer frm the rest of the film.
Under rated Hitchcock film. It's beautifully made. I wasn't keen on it on my first viewing, but after a second watch I fell in love with it. It's fantastic.
The actress who plays Marnie's mother was actually Tippi's age at the time. The casting director (Hitch) asked her if she was there to play the part of marnie! She said no, she said No sir i want to play the mother. I really want to play the mother.
Sorta. In real life Louise Latham (who's still alive) was 8 years older than Tippi. But Tippi lied about her age back then, and the press said she was 15 years older....and the Bernice character gave birth to Marnie when she was 15-16 so it made sense.
Did you know that it is the SAME actress who plays the younger Bernice in the flashback, as well as the old woman? She was unrecognizable
I'm stunned that the superlatives you are giving this outrageous fraud of a film. Don't you have a problem with the Connery zooloogist character playing dime store psychologist, mining a sense of how deeply disturbed Marnie was and then taking the liberty of raping her? Did you really believe the progress of the film merited the tidy manner in which "resolution" occurred. Do you have any problems with the conduct of Hitchcock himself who sexually assaulted Hedren halfway through production?
One of my favorite movies of all time. If I didn't already have a huge crush on Lee Majors as a little girl, I would've gone for Sean Connery in this movie that's for sure.
@andiejanefisher I agree it's wonderful music. You should check out an early twilight zone with Gig Young going back his childhood town. The score in that is very good not disimilar to Marnie.
@JoanCrawford1933 67675 two lucky 13s and 18 and 31 with two groups of same addends (67) so 31 + 2 = 33 masonic grades (3x11 see 11.11 carnival)... not to mention 31 is 13s ´mirror image´...
A deeply sexual, complex psychodrama I know all too well. My mother was like her mother. Connery here is really no more normal (whatever that is) than she.
wonder why it was so underrated for so long. It's a very slow-moving movie that allows you the time to pick up on all the subtleties that are so vital to the story.

I adore Diane Baker in this film. The hair! The clothes! The makeup! The voice! And she is still active in films. Classy lady.
