At this weather conditions you know you can forget 1st, 2nd and even 3rd gear in the gtt (no electric aids). However the twingo has all, so the electric systems helps putting down the perfect power to the road. If 5th gear would re-make the vid on dry surface I bet the gtt would be at least 2 sec ahead of the twingo. I bet the marketing people wont let them :)))))
Back in the day the R5 dominated on circuit tracks. The Twingo just has the benefit of a bit of modern engineering on its side. Didn't you hear the commentator?, He gets it, just equip a better set of tires and wheels and the R5 would have stuck in.
The 5 is a suprisingly hard work, but I know with mine around the twisties it goes really well. The turbo gives you a lot of mid range grunt which is exactly what you need. Exactly the reason the 5 did so well in various rallies.
For those that havn't driven a 5 Gt turbo, trust me it's a lot of fun and feels like a go kart just like the other classic, the Peugeot 205 GTi.

damn hard buggers when you get the boost on the way out of a corner, but the faces on big carowners when you get round the twisty bits in the road , are priceless!
@WRC810 : The fact is GTT is an amazing car, regarding to its specs, but just try to push an Renault Sport car like a Clio on its limits and you will see how far away your little Five is... Even on a dry road :)
But I agree that GTT and other oldschool hatch are very fun to drive, more than a an 2010-Audi S4... but that's it

I had a new '86 GTTurbo..and I smoked a 24v VW golf on the M1 @ 3am..he backed off @132mph..never had a problem with my turbo coming loose,and hot starts were fine,the manuel choke caught a few friends out but back then she turned some heads,my mate had a toyota supra turbo(new),and he said after he drove mine,the toyota was to be sold,really wish i had kept her.Reg D31OGB..metalic blue.
The only downfall was side slip with stone debris on slippery roads,Pirelli P600 195/R13 CupCake mags..sigh!
they are the definitive hot-hatch, the daddy. some consider the mk1 golf gti as the core hot hatch but the R5 GT-T far suppased it on handling, acceleration and fun, iv had a mk1 gti and now own a R5 and i love it, cant belive how much fun they are, the sound alone is awsome, winding up the revs and hearing it spool up thru the external wastegate is priceless :)

i have a white j reg r5 turbo. lotsa fun though not what you would call refined. when he says 'weird tall rubber' the standard tyre size is a 195 55 13, the only car you will find those on. 64 quid each ive still got em on mine only one manufacturer (uniroyal) still makes em. give it a while and no-one will and ill be forced to put some 15'' white 5 spokes on.

R5 GT Turbo was made for the tight hairpins on twisty roads not on circuit trakcs.There is NO WAY Twingo could beat the R5 on a tight twisty road.
The R5 is hard to drive but if you master it you are on TOP.I know that because i had one

they did, it is the model under the 133.
It has a 1.2 turbo engine with around 100 bhp.

i think they (renault) wanted to ake an old school hot hatch.
U have to make a lot of revs to get actual power and work hard to make it go fast.
But i agree with you on putting a turbo on it.
Just a light pressure turbo wil do.
So that the power wil go up to like 160 bhp.

i owned a pulsar gtir and my r5 gtt at the same time, and used my pulsar for a good while recently before selling it, i drove my r5 gtt for the 1st time in about a year today and my god its fun just driving along at 30mph, lovely cars!

I love the R5. The R5 has 195/55/13 wheels, that is a massive factor in the pouring rain.
And its 17 years old, I have owned some fast cars since my r5 turbo, BUT NOTHING ever made me as happy as that car. I love the 5 Turbo.

think id ratehr hav my 5 to, mainly becasie its 20 years younger but only 13bhp more and wow 2 seconds on a lap, still thats stock 8psi r5 try screwing in the acuter to get 14 psi, or more if you have better gaskets

Just some skinnier profile/decent rubber and it would match it I think. The standard uniroyals are well known for being shocking in the wet. I know mine was until I put some 45 profile toyo's on.
