The dark and sonorous chords from the ensemble mixed with the snare drum!!! Coolest part! Feels like I'm marching into an evil battle with hundreds of troops. Truly phenomenal writing!
Although the sudden switch from minor to major near the end still doesn't make sense to me, I think of this as one of the most perfect pieces of music I've ever heard. I'll never forget rehearsing it with my college wind ensemble one day when we had some students from Europe drop by. When we finished, they began applauding and would not stop. Eventually the conductor had us stand, and then we sat down to continue with the rehearsal. But they still kept applauding! This piece does that to you.
I am playing this in middle school band, and its really easy to me. but it seems that the entire low brass, except for 1 tuba, two of the percussionists, the 2nd and 3rd trumpets, and 2nd and 3rd clarinets and a few of the flutes all.. aren't the best it sounds really bad
i love this song so much. I playing the 1st alto sax part and im the only one. its great. btw the 32nd notes arnt that bad o.o the only part i dont like is that the piccolo in my high school band (im a soph, piccolos a sr) is that shes way out of tune. wish they were easier to tune -_-
i couldnt agree more! i played this my junior year in school and i love this suite still! it starts so sullen and ends with such brilliace and conviction! GO HORNS!!!
What happened to M. Milhaud in the coal country to evoke this haunting memory? Drums of doom lead to the final bright statement, finally, in the last major chord.

The reason this piece is so haunting is that it Milhaud's reaction to what the Germans did to France in World War II.

the thirty-second note runs are scary to play at first!

The French Horn part at the end of this piece is beautiful. It gives me chills.
