Man, I gotta say, if anyone can say there was a more powerful live band at that time (or perhaps any time)
I'd sure like to see it.
The year before I was at DD tour, same venue, and I was one of those SOBs at the very front getting smashed by the crowd. It was great! Those security dudes had their hands full, to prevent a full blown stampede.
That blond chick got the old neck choke esaphugus (-5, sp) smashing....and did not even feel it.
This footage is like those dreams where you're on a stage but you have no idea why or what you're doing there. Amazing to be actually on stage with the band through the camera. That guy probably spent some time in the psyche ward after his adventure.
Awesome vid and coverage. This is absolutely intense for the hardcore VH fan to see this footage for the first time in its entirety. Takes me right back to the second night at the Forum in Los Angeles May 14, 1984 when I saw my heroes for the very first time. During this contest MTV was at its very best. Thanks VH France.
This was April 4, 1984......."Jump" was already #1 on the radio by the time this footage was shot........Van Halen was the biggest band in the world at this point
This is the highest quality old VH live video I've ever seen. Now I know how his live tone was in 84: AMAZING. I thought that maybe it seemed to treble-y in 2007 was because I had never actually seen VH live before, but this marshall sound seems MUCH more velvety. Unless that's just because this is on 32mm film and not digital, I think that this is far superior to his razorblade tone now. I think he must have lost some high frequency hearing and thinks the 5150III sounds smoother than it is.
@jhop5150 This is recorded right off of the soundboard. Eddies guitar is basically dry. Dave's Voice has no echo or reverb. The sound you hear on this video is not the sound you would here in the audience. I love the rawness of the sound myself! good stuff.
@whalefan5150 It is the dry guitar, drums etc. but to be more precise what we hear is Alex's monitor that is right next to him. Alex always wanted to hear exclusively Ed's dry channel and Roth's vocal. The audience got the dry and wet mix, which was incredible during the 84 tour.
@VHFrance This is at Cobo Arena. April 4, and 5, 1984. Kind of toward the end of Cobo's heyday for big rock shows. VH didn't play the Joe until 1986 for 5150.
HOLY SHIT FOOTAGE ON STAGE WITH VAN HALEN DURING A SONG. In my town Detroit, no less! NEVER have I been to a metal show in Detroit with that many chicks.
This is what Van Halen was all about in their prime, pure over-indulgence and excess...god I miss those party-hearty days :(

I was fortunate enough to see VH tour on:
1980 Woman Children First
1981 Fair Warning
1983 Diver Down
1984 1984
And I must say, each one of those concerts kicked some serious ASS!! This dude was one lucky bastard to win the Lost Weekend contest.
