@XxsorgxX Err... no. Black was there first. Regarding Bathory, their first three albums was pure old-skool black. Then Blood Fire Death was like viking trying to burst from black's womb. When the viking metal finally wiped off the afterbirth of black metal, we got Hammerheart.

@KrazyKuKluxKiller ...well as a fan of bathory im very well aware of what they brought to the scene in the beginning...and yes it was very black, but its just a difference of opinion regarding what is considered black metal...to me, black metal really started with, well, the first wave in the late 80s with mayhem and on...im not arguing with you, its just a matter of different perceptions as to what the black metal sound was...and to be honest, early bathory had alot of thrash elements imo

Black metal is the best. There is a lot of overlap though. Viking metal lacks edge and does not have the punch or attitude that black metal does. I listen to both. Both are good.

Tyr, Einherjer and a few others are really the only bands that can be classified as actual viking metal. There are many black metal bands that sing about vikings and well i guess they could be defined as viking metal. in my opinion though Viking metal has to have that authentic/traditional norse sound. Tyr and Einherjer are the ones i can think of right off the bat. i know i missed a few.

Black is superior, except both mixed are the best. Bad vikings bands like tyr, ensiferum and amon amarth are just shit riffs with gay synths and yelling about false religions and gods. But, Kroda, Absurd, Heol Telwen, Thryfing, Svartsot, and Dragobrath are pure awesome. Black metal is good, but mainstream folk/viking metal sucks dick.

Viking metal. It has more of a melodic quality, usually due to influence of Scandinavian folk music. Black metal uses more dissonance, which I find as a negative quality. I also prefer the clean/growling vocal style of viking metal to the shrieking style of black metal.

the problem with viking metal is that we really dont live in that world anymore [btw, I love Hammerheart more than any other Bathory record]. I just see Satan as a societal barrier and a PERFECT discriminant. just my two cents. two very reputable genres

Both are good, but black metal also helped push Viking Metal cause of bands like Enslaved and Bathory, so alot of the bands are both, but I think I prefer Viking Metal alittle more

I like both black and folk/viking metal, but usually i prefer folk metal (i started out with folk metal, so its got a greater attachment to me). I'm not really a fan of Mayhem tbh (i realise that they were one of the pioneering BM bands, but still, i prefer the more atmospheric Burzum style BM)

I think Tyr wins in this case though.

For me personally, it really depends on the band. But for the most part I'd pick viking metal. While both have similar qualities most of the time (since viking metal derived from black of course), I like how viking bands fuse traditional music with modern metal, giving it a really atmospheric vibe. To me it just seems different from everything else.

My favorite thing about BM is how it can get sloppy, and finntheirishflea Black Metal isn't electronic but that song is a little more... ummm electronic sounding. But Mayhem is one of the best bands ever so I shouldn't be talking shit about them. but I like both genres...

I like both Genres, but I prefer Viking Metal any day. I don't really think that this was a good example, because TYR only uses clean vocals, I think Fosfor9 should have played something like Ensiferum to better represent Viking Metal (because they have black metal and clean vocals). Mayhem was more sloppy than most black metal too, should have played something more like Dragonlord or Dimmu Borgir.

Mayhem is sloppy because they are a early black metal band much like Gorgoroth and Dark Throne, Bathory, Burzum etc. Dimmu Borgir are fairly new in the black metal scene but even there older stuff is gritty and sloppy its just the way black metal sounds...I like Black metal and Viking metal equally.
