@c5hw4 hate panic they are another jam band covering another jam band u know what i mean! they have no great originals and who wants to hear some one take 30 min to play one song! great bands know how to keep it short, badass and to the point. ZZ TOP IS ONE OF THOSE BANDS!!!
@djrodz69 In the famous words of The Dude, "Yeah...well..you know that's like uh..you're opinion man." No great originals, you have got to be kidding me. Plus, millions of people want to go hear bands jam out--if not, there would be no such thing as jam bands. I have been to 26 WP shows and they fucking rock. ZZ Top is the shit too.
This is so got the vibe of the RJ original .. zztop rock just for bringing the blues raw and real how it would've been if RJ had an gibson les paul lol
heh, all y'all kids think this is good? Well I and I loves ZZtop...but Robert Johnson done did it right...tight and outta sight. Wit ONE guitar no back up and leaving you wondering "was there one or two guys playin' bro?"
What's that red guitar he's playin' recently? Is that the Gibson Moderne? also, does anyone have a cooler guitar collection than the BFG!? Muddy Woody, Pearly Gates, the rare Moderne has he turned the holy grail into a guitar yet?
He claims to have an original Gibson Moderne, the ones he's been seen playing on stage are not the original as it's too valuable. He's had a couple custom made.
The red one you mention maybe the Gretsch Billy Bo Jupiter Jet?
Maybe keith richards who have more than 3000 guitars (he says that he may open a museum...)
People says that Billy have hangars full of guitars, amps, and cars. When billy likes a guitar, he want to have all the guitar of the same series (now he wants to buy all the fender esquire...); He's the man!
Who cares what he's playing? To get the sound, the tone, you need to be Billy. He could play a 1986 Chevy Corsica and make it sound like a Ferrari Testarossa.
Stop the video at 3:08 and you'll see "Tokai" written on a piece of gaffers tape... this is no Tokai, or Gibson. Like all of Billy's guitars it was made by Mr. John Bolin. Get the new "Live from Texas" video and watch the backstage extras where Billy's tech reveals that no matter what it says on the headstock Billy only plays guitars built by John Bolin.
I don't think so, it's a prototype Goldtop Les Paul, c 1952/3. In other words, it's verging on priceless. And you can't buy one unless you buy this one!
Why would a man who owns thirteen yachts (at last count) play a Tokai?
I know about this because my friend James Harman appeared on this show with ZZ Top, playing harmonica. He's a long-time friend of the Rev Willy Gibbons.
Dude, he's been playing Tokais all over! No secret at all.
Why would he be playing a Tokai? Late '70s / early '80s Tokais (talking about the 'better' LP clones of the era here) are as close as anyone has EVER gotten to the holy grail; LP 1959s. That's including Gibson! What I've heard, they actually had a '59 they broke down to pieces to see what's in there. Just check if you can find any for sale and then check the price tag!
I seen them live last year in Nashville and they blowed the roof of that fucking place... Billy stopped right in the middle of the set and changed guitars and started telling this story about where he got the peso he uses, then pulled out this crazy ass solo I had never heard before, it was utterly amazing.
this fuckin kicks ass, The Rev. Willie G and the Church of ZZ Top, check billy's singin' on this, kickin ass all over the place, pullin' them blues out that les paul...robert johnson texas-style.
I play, but I'm not in Billy's league. Nor Jeff Healey's or Robert Johnson's either! Jeff's version of this, I think is better. He really rocks it electric blues style.
i dunno... i like the harsh tone of the white stripes cover. this one IS really smooth. but the harshness somehow brings out jack whites emotion over the song or something. it's what i prefer anyway. this is good too, just too smooth for my taste.
impossible to get better?!!! robert johnsons original is 1000x better then this. he wrote it, made it so good that zz top would WANT to make a cover. zz top probably doesn't think theirs is better then the original, this is just their tribute. besides THAT, White Stripes cover is better then this too
I think he's just talking about Billys tone and not about the interpretation of the song. I dig Jack Whites playing and everyone knows Robert Johnsons importance. Still I have to say that when it comes to skill, tone and pure mojo, can't think of too many guys who could take on Billy these days... as sad as it is.
Btw, whats going on with the headstock between this one and 'Whats up with that' from the same show?
Yea man, I was referring to Billy's incredible tone. Billy stands at the top of the mountain these days bro, for sure. I mean really, it's pure butter and it doesn't get much smoother. I didn't notice sup w/ the headstock, whatchu mean?
About the headstock: freeze this one at 2:12 and you see it's got Tokai written on it. Looks the same on Nasty dogs vid from this show, but not the same on Whats up with that. It's not the usual Tokai text, more like handwritten with a marker pen.
Yep, I see what you're saying now. I'd bet he's got two versions, each with a different pick-up/coil config, I'm 100% guessing but Billy always seems to have super customized amps and pick-ups etc.... Are those Tokia's big dollar items or what? I'm not familiar with them at all.. Thanks for the info ansla.
The guy who commented the 'Whats up...' vid says it's a Gibson proto. With all due respect, I'd have to doubt that even if Billy himself told me. Just based on what I've read, he's a bit of a bs artist when it comes to gear. That guitar could be a Gibson proto, sure. It could also be a customizzed Tokai, a John Bolin custom or something else.
Tokai is a copy guitar company...they've been around for years copying Gibsons, Fenders, PRS etc etc...i believe they originally were a japanese company (dont quote me on this), but im quite sure they are now a chinese brand....supposedly they make pretty good copies....but anyways, hes playing through an orange amp...he doesn't necessarily need gibsons or fenders to get the tone....amps make up a huge part of his tone...check out trainwreck amps for instance...he owns one of very few
lol. Tokai is alive and well and living in Japan, same factory since 1947, same craftsman/luthiers, still producing the best Les Pauls in the world, at half the price of Gibsons.
I'm going to have to agree with Oscar on this one. Robery Johnsons tone was better? Hardly...You have the nerve to compare white stripes to the great zztop...thats just cheese buddy.

You still see him occasionally pull out "Pearly", his '59 'burst LP, but most often these days he's playing a Gretsch "Billy-Bo".
ettsn 2 years ago
@talamonster9:
There's also "Love Rock" written on the headstock of this guitar.
Man IT IS TOKAI for sure. There's no point in covering Bolin's signature with a tape. It's such a stupid idea :S
You can find lots of photos with a Tokai inlay logo on that guitar.
The fact is, that Billy plays whatever he want's, and whatever's making the job done well.
He surely uses guitars made by Bolin.
But don't take seriously what he's telling about his equipment. He's making it up all the time.
