  • R.I.P Steve Merrill....

  • should've used your spikes when tornado was vulnerable at 0:28

  • @thekingofcoolness1 Neither of us wanted to inflict any real damage, so this demonstration was just to see how many times we could immobilise each other. It was 3-2 to Lightning, and an exciting match.

  • @Calvertfilm

    oh...coooool

  • @Calvertfilm When you battled it out in the arena, could you hearJonathan Pearce's hilarious comedy or the battle music being played?

  • @aussiumo Thankfully not :-)

  • @CalvertFilm Strange then, that Gravity had to be beaten by Tornado.

  • @MichaelBackhander True - nice little triangle going on there :-)

  • @CalvertFilm I think you were very unlucky to get put up against Gravity in the Heat Final. Maybe if the 7th seed 13 Black was against you, you could have made the Semis.

  • @MichaelBackhander Yeah, Gravity was a powerful machine. Pity too we had a flat tyre - the robot just wouldn't respond properly. At the time I thought I had an intermittent receiver. I wonder how long we could have gone on for, getting under them and flipping them instead. Who knows?

  • Why is "Two Tribes" by Frankie goes to Hollywood playing in the background? Great choice of Music for this fight.

I take it this is lightning's best moment?

  • @GeriatricFan1963 I've no idea who chose the music. It is one of our best moments but we had a few, such as our first round in series 7 in which we knocked out Herbinator in 11 secs, and immobilised the heat seed 13 Black. Alien knocked itself out, so we were the only robot left running. That was good. Pitting Thor next round was precisional, and a dramatic fight too as we got close to mucking it up. But this video shows us pinning the champ in 11 secs, so was special. Plus we won :-)

  • lightning is an AWESOME robot.

i loved the dual flipper design. i would love to have lightning for my own aha.

    i want one. lol

  • @kevinminwooyi Well if ever it comes up for sale (I doubt it) I'll let you know :-)

  • @Calvertfilm awesome!

but even if, you live in the uk right? haha. how are you gonna get it to me im in california lol.

lightning doesnt have the dual flippers anymore right? mannnn you shoulda kept it even if the power isnt as strong.

  • @kevinminwooyi Well it couldn't self right with two flippers, so we had to put all the power into one, then it could. It limited my attacking style a little but it didn't seem to stop us. It was even better in series 7 with one flipper, than it was in Extreme with two.

And I can post it to you :-) 100kg won't cost much LOL.

  • @Calvertfilm yeahhh it wont cost that muchhh xD

ahaha. you are so friendly!! i didnt even think that you would reply to my comment. haha. its so cool talking to someone who actually has competed!

yeah even if it had more power the dual flippers were one of the coolest designs in robot wars. it was unique and just looked cool aha. i loved robot wars when i was little and i recently found in on youtube so ive been watching every fight lol.

  • @kevinminwooyi There are just a few 'old' roboteers still around doing stuff. Most poeple are new now. All of us are enthusiastic about robots, so that is cool. I'm currently making a life size R2 (vids on here too). The other active roboteers in the UK are to be found on 'Roaming Robots' web site and also the 'Fighting Robots Association' forum.

I started as a fan. Cassius (series2) was an inspiration, and Chaos 2 as well.

  • @Calvertfilm thats so awesome. i always dreamed of being on robot wars and building my own robot.

but robot wars was in the uk. it wasnt possible aha.

chaos 2 is definitely one of my most favorite robots.

lightning i never saw in action as a kid. i recently discovered lightning on youtube. and i watched some of the vids and it became a favorite. i cant believe they stopped robot wars. do you know why?

  • @kevinminwooyi Yeah, they even filmed the US version over here. I was in the audience for one! Mind you, you had Battlebots over there?

They stopped the show because the company that made it went into reality TV shows :-(

  • @Calvertfilm awh, they stopped it because of REALITY TV.

omg, robot wars was the best :(

hmmm, i never saw battlebots on tv. i saw some on youtube but i find robot wars just better. lol

how much did it cost to build lightning?

  • @kevinminwooyi Total project cost was £4,000. The robot currently has £2,500 sitting in it. We changed some components over time to improve it, also some of the cash was for promotional items for kids (about £500). We had a generous sponsor.

  • @Calvertfilm not sure how much that is in usd lol.

    sounds expensive though.

where do you get the parts to build robots like these?

  • @kevinminwooyi To find out where we got the parts (in the UK) the easiest way is to visit our web page. Just Google 'Calvertfilm Lightning' and you'll find all sorts of info.

Currently £4,000 would be about just over $6,000.

  • @Calvertfilm wow, now that is expensive. but if you have a passion for it money isnt a problem.

  • @Calvertfilm Some people build them much cheaper than that. Depends on your resources to hand.

  • @kevinminwooyi Well nobody knows the exact reason but here's one. Channel 5ruined robot wars. They matched fixed and cheated better robots out of winning fight. An example Storm 2. Anyway, they only put one ad out and was a animated humanoid robot who had a spike and like to stick it into other robots. It was a really crap ad. The ad showed no clips of robot wars at all in it. You should find it youtube. Also robot wars was on 1:00pm so the views were low so bye robotwars. Channel5 were dopes.

  • hi, im a big fan of yours.THAT WAS A GREAT FIGHT! Shame about the size of the arena.

  • @snitterfield9 Thanks for those comments. Sounds like you may be our biggest fan!

  • @Calvertfilm ahem

  • @Garfie489 Ok, one of our biggest fans :-)

  • this arena is way too small for these

  • @LaveaFirmis True - the limitations of a shopping centre. At least we got to perform.

  • @Calvertfilm yeah fair enough

  • I see Tornado weren't using the cheat-frame in this fight

  • Personally I like that frame - they used design/brains to beat certian other robots. It was within the rules and if every robot had something similar, it would have made vertical crushers redundant, so the rules were re-written. That's when you know you've had a good idea, when rules have to be changed.

But you are entitled to your view too of course if you don't like it. It does take the fun out of the fight.

In our case it wouldn't have helped them, only assisted our machine.

  • Well you have to admit it's very unsporting

  • In a way it is. But actually the most unsporting behaviour in RW is when a vertical crusher holds its opponent for a minute or so, to then let go briefly and then crush again, not allowing the opponent into a fight.

The equivalent for our robot would be to pin an opponent against a wall and hold them there with the flipper but we don't do that.

Razor got what they deserved in the final. I don't like Razor I'm afraid. Great design but poor sportmanship. Just my view.

  • @Calvertfilm

I'd agree, although im a fan of Razer. I liked Simon Scott's character throughout the series, but it was Ian Lewis who was the let down of the team, even at one point throwing his temper at Vincent Blood after the european championships fight between Razer and Tornado not allowing Vincent to have a vote.

  • @RobotsGreatWar2 Simon was good on Techno Games. Vinnie seemed a nice guy but I never met him. Great design of robot. I just didn't enjoy how they fought with it as said before. Oh well, they don't even seem on the scene anymore anyways?

  • where`s the part where you drive under the floor lol it is a brillient picture though

  • @Garfie489 2.33 Lightning goes under then Tornado follows at 2.53, a reference made to the floor by Steve at 3.20 then the floor suffering again at 3.33

  • @Calvertfilm the time i meant was theres a photo on your website where lightning goes straight under it so the entire robot is under it

  • I can't quite remember now - that was a few years ago. Our front was so low it kept pulling up the floor.

  • take that tornado for cheeting against razer, go lightning!!!!!!

  • If you're talking about the final, it could be argued that brains beat brawn when Tornado beat Razor?

Thanks for saying 'go Lightning' though.

  • I agree with Calvertfilm, how can people attack them all the time just for showing some intelligence?

Razor is a fabulous machine I won't even deny that at all, but the team well, I think they are sore losers, I mean look at their reaction when pussycat beat them.

They need to losen up a bit I think.

  • I agree. Razer is a good machine but Tornado is too. People mostly hate it because it doesn't look as flashy. It has an interchangeable weapons bay which means they can use any weapon they presented to the judges at the start of the series. It was simply good strategy on their part.

Oh if you see somebody called Ryhorn100 you'd best take care. He's the king of the froth-mouthed Razer fanboys on youtube. Seriously on almost any video about either robot he's there spreading the Tornado hate.

  • Thanks for the heads up.

  • Is that Steve Merrill commentating?

Tornado needs room to maneuver in order to win. Great job Lightning

  • That is indeed Steve. Well spotted.

It was a good match, as our bot needs more room and grip, so it was quite even. The first fight went to Tornado after an audience vote but for this second fight I had a much better idea of how to fight them. Practice makes perfect!

  • where did you get the idea of lighting anyway as i think (and please correct me on this if im wrong) but lighting is the only robot in robot wars with a side on wedge flipper as its main weapon in fact the only robot i can think of that comes anywhere near lighting is firestorm but they are nothing like lighting (really only the wedge that once flipped over mr psyhco)

  • In the 2nd wars Cassius was a wedge flipper that was the first to self-right. That was the inspiration for Lightning (& I have told Rex Garrard that too, the creator of Cassius).

So we made a wedge fillper. Problem was that by then there were loads of them, so to be different we went with a sideways one, in fact two at first. We ended up with one because it needed all the power in one. RW show liked the fact we were different (unique).

Really though a front flipper is more effective.

  • too right as the side flipper almost makes it imposible to get a robot out of the arena which nowadays is what a flipper is all about (first of all they where made to knock out batteries(chaos 2) self right (cassius) but nowadays they just get robots out of the arena

  • Agreed. Although it does mean opponents underestimate us. In our first round fight in the 7th wars we put Herbinator on the side in 11 secs, then put 13 Black on the side too. The weapon helps me position robots accurately, and that was shown again in the next round with a clinical pitting of Thor. In our qualifiers too we were the only robot running out of three. Only when we met Gravity were we stopped. So it is not too bad.

  • 2 things great win shows you what a great robot lightning is and 2 when tornado was stuck on the side why did you never use your rear spikes thats something i noticed in robot wars 2 is that you never really used your spikes ( great macth doe and even if u never seen robot wars what a macth up of names lighting and tornado lol)

  • An interesting question. The spikes are actually quite weak. They are made of 3mm aluminium. They are for show but also to protect the back end from attack, 'cos that is where the brains of the robot are. Also they will bend and absorb impact from spinners, which is what they did in the qualifiers against Barberous (never shown on TV - shame that). So they get bent easily, but like the crumple zone on a car, stop the shock going to places you don't want it to.

  • oh yeh i see now and if you look closly at 0:30 they seem hollow

  • Correct.

  • omg i remember this i was in the far side at 0:06

  • Glad you remember it! That was 2004.

  • Comment removed

  • i remember that the guy who presented it got me to say 3 2 1 activate (not this 1) as when he got the audience to say it i was the loudest and got me to do it in the mic my dad could hear it from debnams on the friday (by the way i sat next to someone who said he was lightnings teams nephew or something like that it was a great day (by the way what does lighting do now)

  • How can they fight in such a small arena?

  • It was tough, as it gave hardly any time to spin around before your opponent was on top of you. Also you couldn't pick up speed in such a small arena. But for these two robots that wasn't much of a problem as both were good at pushing and fast-turning accurate machines.

  • the arena was made for smaller robots made by schools i think (or sir chromalot the hosts of the event thier robots the size of a truck wheel) ever way you chose i was made for small robots not the full size ones like ripper tornado lighting and behmoth

  • True. The normal heavyweight arena is about 12 metres square I think.

  • what is the song (someting about two sides go to war) really want to know

  • Remix of 'Two Tribes' by Frankie Goes to Hollywood (1984) was playing in the background.

  • Well done for beating Tornado.

  • Cheers.

  • yah lightnig please come to the live circut

  • Alright! Lightning just waiting for the thunder!

  • DIE TORNADO GO LIGHTNING!!!!

  • Right on, man. Right on.

  • Go Lightning! Tornado's had a beating like that coming ever since they played that, as far as I'm concerned, cheap shot on Razer in the final of the 6th wars in the UK. Long live, Razer!

  • go litning!

  • i was there i think
