Supposedly there was a chasm among Carson insiders on the Leno-Letterman feud. Johnny, Peter Lasally and Doc were "Letterman" guys. Ed and Fred deCordova were Leno supporters. Ed made frequent appearances with Leno after Carson retired, but I don't believe he ever went on Letterman's show.
@MegaObserver1 I don't think Letterman actually ever wanted him as a guest. Jay, forever wanting to be the guy that everyone loves, wanted to have Ed on all the time as a sort of tonight show 'tradition' being maintained. I think Ed would have gone on any talk show who wanted him.
