what in the movie even points to the japanese culture as inferior? come on, that's so far fetched, and i highly doubt sofia coppola even tried to do such a thing. i think you're missing the point. the movie is based around being "lost in translation," being stuck in a place that's completely different (not necessarily inferior). and *weird*=very strange=unusual or different--weird just means you haven't seen it b4. the connotation that *weird* is bad has nothing to do with the meaning
i gotta say, i agree with eatmycake, but this movie is definitely one of those that is based of what the audience believes. i like to think of it as more of a close friendship type of thing rather than a romantic relationship, but i think the point of the film is to immerse the audience in the feelings the characters felt. the whisper, the debate about whether it's a love story or not, it's to help get the audience to be lost in the film.
Critic Andrew Sarris sums it up well: "The result is a rarity, a grown-up romance -where- sexual facility -has been replaced- with emotional longing".
I agree with Mr. Andersoncouncil. This is a love story. It is so unconventional that trying to put what they felt and lived into words gets "lost in translation" (the title can be construed as many things, the romantic relationship between the characters, the feeling of being lost and alienated in their own lives and in the Japanese modern culture that surrounds them).
@affjigabiggle ???? loooooool? You mean lots of love? lonely old lesbian? large ostrich labia? haha You make me laugh out loud loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool
@medjohi We're racist if we enjoyed the film? Say what you want about how Sofia Coppola portrays the Japanese culture. Truth is, she portrayed friendship and loneliness in this film better than any other filmmaker I've ever seen.
Absolutely love the movie. Thumbs up for the film, but thumbs down for the song choice. Like, are you fucking kidding me? Pink? Haven't you heard the freaking soundtrack to Lost in Translation? Sophia and the creators of the movie obviously had taste. Sadly, this video doesn't. Just complete blasphemy to a well thought-out soundtrack.
I disagree eatmycake. It is in fact a love story. But it is NOT a romance. Try to remember that some of our most passionate relationships can be with our friends.
Then LIT, which was great, I got the movie, I'm majoring in philosophy.. but you also have to realize that there is this thing called "ethics/morals" and no matter how bored you are with your life, it doesn't give you an excuse to go and kiss someone else? It's just plain wrong, she should have known better if she majored in philosophy. I'm glad they didn't have sex, which is good.
I just finished watching this movie.... but it doesn't make sense at all.
He is in Japan for a wiskey ad, she is in Japan with her husband and both realize they don't like their life... magically she know know a bunch of guys with whom they go have a good time (but before she seem to be confined in the hotel alone)... and than he return in USA.... BOOOORING!!!

THIS IS NOT A LOVE STORY. The movie is in NO WAY a love story. Its about being lost, whether it be in location, in interpretation, or in life, and finding a person who is right there with you. Finding someone just as lost and trying to find it together. Its about friendship, the kind that stays with you wherever you go, no matter how long you know the person.
The scenario you describe - having watched the film several times - sounds like a love story to me. Lost souls who fall in love, perhaps. Tortured souls, absolutely. But I didn't think for a second at the end of this film that these two hadn't fallen in love. Articulate comment though - and yes it is a truly wonderful movie.
What happened to the video of Avril Lavigne. I looked it up and can't find it anywhere! It went best with this song, so if anyone knows what I'm talking about can they make the video?
This is probably the most misinterpreted film of all times...It is not AT ALL about love or falling in love...Still, one of my favourite movies, reminds me of my time in Tokyo...
I also love this movie and it also reminds me of my time in Tokyo. I'm curious, what's your interpretation of this film? Friendship? Growing up? Life experiences?
Oh weird, I thought that this movie was supposed to be about loneliness. It didn't occur to me until this second it was supposed to be a love story. Definitely not. I thought it was supposed to be a May-December friendship, like that "What would you say to yourself at twenty-two?" question.
i think that the film is about two people that were lost in their own life but when they meet each other find out that his life or her life wasn't so horrible and well maybe is about freindship too, and Life experiences but most of all the fim is about failure of understanding :about culture, people, age and LIFE
scarlett Johansson possesses a rare kind of beauty, but the thing i love about her is even though she's famous now, she doesn't pretend to be something she's not. the faint smile sends a good message.
there was just something about the movie "Lost in Translation" that really captured me. It was the music and the mood that it set for me... really lonely, yet warm...
To any Westerner who has ever stayed in a random Asian hotel due to business commitments......trust me....it aint that glamorous.......

The way Japan is presented in this movie is sooo stereotypical.
they make japan and the japanese look weird so it attracts ignorant western morons.
I don't think this movie is boring, and I know what you're talking about when you guys say this film is inspiring and meaninful.
but i must say that those who say this film is amazing are stupid racists.
i was amazed to know that westerners still continue to portray other cultures as inferior and weird things.

eatmycakefatkid, I agree with you 100%! It's exactly that! This is not a love story!!
anacproenca 2 years ago
its about being lost in the world.. and finding someone who shares that feeling..
the theme of losing things is very present
(sleep, love, the lauguage etc...) the movie is moving, and reminds me off being a kid who fell in love with this girl
heinzketchup90 2 years ago
friendship.. that turns to love, pal
heinzketchup90 2 years ago
@eatmycakefatkid It is what you describe, but it also is a love story. A very unconventional love story. Ask Sofia Coppola.
