Thurston is a Gem. I think I even prefer what he says to the music. Something very cool about the theoretical nature of their thinking and expression. :)
just wondering...since i'm only 14 and therefore didn't live through this time....what period was sonic youth the most popular. cause i read that they only signed to a major record label in the early 90's...and that they got better once they signed so is there heyday considered the early 90's ??
@bottafff Sonic Youth was most "popular" in the early to mid '90s, thanks to the wider exposure of their major label deal. However, their heyday is widely regarded to be from 1986 to 1988, when they released the fantastic albums EVOL, Sister, and Daydream Nation. That said, all the periods and phases of their music are awesome, and they are well worth getting into. Start with the three albums I mentioned above.
@bottafff As a fellow 14-year-old, but one whose favourite band is Sonic Youth, I'm gonna have to agree with leamanc, but I'm gonna have to add Goo (1990) to that list. The order I was introduced to Sonic Youth in was Goo, Daydream Nation, EVOL, and then Sister, and I'd recommend exactly that order.
@noisysoul I saw J&M Chain back in 1987. They played at the student center of my local college. Standing room only; mosh pit 5 ft. in front of the band; the band on the floor, same level as us, no stage, no barricades; only about 200 to 300 people. It was one of the best damn small venue shows I have ever seen.
I've never heard of Sonic Youth getting stoned everyday or anything like that. I heard one of them sneezed while trying out cocaine for the first time.
I was 5 at the time. seems so weird to me, I love their music so much and they had so much influence on me when I was learning to play, I literally can't express what it means to me. guess that would make Moore happy - that thousands of people are now blasting people with new music partly because of him
sonic youth should be listened to by all, then listened to again, and again, and then again until it bleeds into their soul. eternal love for their brilliance.
