When Pete did this and the entire Sgt Pepper's album, with 4 pcs,, with The Exceptions, they sounded more like, and even better than The Beatles, ever did live ! Pete's voice is clearer& crisper than Paul, and Jimmy Vincent(Dondelinger), played more than George, or Eric Clapton. The Exceptions, and Chicago, both with Pete, were the two of best bands, in Chicago, or anywhere !
@sonicwarrior This song just came to my mind randomly so I came to this posting to not really recognize it at all. When I saw your comment mentioning EWF I knew that was who I was looking for. Thanks!
Earth Wind and Fire had a hit with this when the Sgt Pepper movie came out in 78. supposedly Chicago had wanted to have done it and been in the movie. They weren't and started doing it live as if to say, see, we rock this.
Not bad at all really, but I think Blood, Sweat, and Tears covered it even better in the mid 70's! Cetera cannot match David Clayton's Thomas's vocal range here.
all and all Chicago fans must make a request, to return to chicagoooooooooooo cetera, it is urgent now I realize that Jason is not in the height of peter, good to analyze what the band now, though he made some good songs, before the end of the world peter returns to Chicago, the band needs you
@LINICO1985 I believe Peter Cetera will do a reunion concert with Chicago. I believe this will happen exactly one day after hell freezes over. So needless to say, I'm not holding my breath.
Cetera sounds like McCartney on this video which just highlights Cetera"s singing ability and talent. The young Cetera shown here is a superb musician.
Well, I think that while no one did this song as well as The Beatles, I am very surprised here. Most groups fall flat on their collective asses when they try to do Beatles music, but wow...Chicago does pretty well here. Chicago doing the Beatles...while I've been a fan of both groups forever, I didn't know Chicago performed this song. Which proves an old dog like me can still learn something new once in a while...
Chicago has played many Beatle songs, especially the ones they (the Beatles),never played live. It is possible, Chicago did this on musical purpose. Magical Mystery Tour is also one they used to open and this song as one of the closing songs.
Well, what with the Horn section, Chicago would be a 'natural' for this song. Most groups just don't do well with Beatles songs...you can't go wrong with a Beatles tune...
@cdadave83814 Not every group has this horn section and Pete Cetera singing lead. I suspect Blood, Sweat and Tears would have done a nice job on this one too!!! The horns from hell!!!
I would have sold my soul to either have been a bass or a trombone. Damn, the guys just friggin rocked this song. Not even the Beatles or EW&F could touch this version!!!
in this incarnation.. did chicago just have two lead vocalists? cetera and lamm with chris pinnick on guitar? also, i am pretty sure chicago did not regret being associated with the Sgt. Pepper movie. everyone else in that movie was pretty embarrassed.
Well, actually, no. Although he isn't seen in this video's camera angles, Bill Champlin was already in Chicago as of 1982. He just doesn't have a major role in this particular song (although he's on keyboards).
I take it back....Champlin wasn't on keyboards on this song....he was on rhythm guitar.....my confusion with another clip. You can see a quick glimpse of him on guitar in the early part of this song.....a VERY quick glimpse.
Chicago was originally offered a chance to record this song for the Sgt. Pepper movie back in the 70's, but Jim Guercio told them not to take the deal, so they turned it down and the song was offered to EWF instead. They spent the next several years kicking themselves in the asses for turning it down lol.
This was one of the songs that inspired Walt Parazaider to come up with the idea of adding a horn section to a rock band, called The Big Thing, then CTA, and then Chicago!
EW&F had an entire horn section consisting of over a half a dozen brass players. CHI has THREE brass players that can bring the house down. So I guess in a way it's unfair to compare 6 to 3. :)
@shellshockkd12 Chicago's version was an homage to the Beatles' version. They basically used the same arrangement. Earth, Wind & Fire's version was a completely new arrangement. I like EWF, but George Martin & The Beatles knew what they were doing, and Chicago realized that, and just went with that original blueprint. This is why they just did it live, and not on record. It was a treat for the fans, giving us a chance to hear that great arrangement in a live setting.
@actormanic The original version was boring, but had potential. Thats why EWF, did it there way & it blows the original version away. The Beatles probably wouldn't want to do there original version, after EWF.
@noinwe You're entitled to your opinion. As I said, I like EWF, but I never liked their version of this song. It always sounded weak and the vocal refrain sounds hokey to me. I'm not alone in this thinking, as I knew MANY others who felt the same when it came out. Again, this is just my opinion, but if I want to listen to a "blow away" EWF yune, I'll listen to something like Yearnin' Learnin'....BTW, Paul McCartney has played the song MANY times in concert...Guess which arrangement he uses?

Chris Pinnick was in Chicago for much longer than 1 year. He started touring with them around 1980-1 and didn't leave until the "17" tour in 1985.

at 0:14-0:16 that's CHRIS PINNICK.
He was with the group for less than a year and as far as I know NEVER appeared in ANY group photo that has been released publicly.
Bill Champlin can be seen 2nd from the right in the whole stage shot starting at 1:05. That's Bobby Lamm behind him (to your right).
