Warmouth fish eating several Black Soldier Fly larvae

humm warmouth are actually my favorite sunnies. to me myself they are more like sunny bass than sunny sunny. they don't have teh disc type body and more of a longated body simular to basses. their mouth also makes them look more varocious and cool. i feed the warmouth at the two little pond grasshoppers and crickets since the population of grasshopper is over abundant.

@zajdabneeg I'm the only person I know that actually stocked warmouth in my pond. A few other do it but most consider them a "trash" fish. The record for warmouth is around 2.5 pounds and I would love to have a pond full of 1 pounders. Green sunfish are similar and get even larger but they're aren't native where I live. I've also stocked red ear sunfish which is a great fighting fish and good to eat.

2.5 pound is actually pretty big. maybe 8-10 inch.  iono warmouth just gives me more action. the only reason why mn don't have such big warmouth is due to season and competition. my little pond. over one winter you can only catch 2-4 inch warmouth the next spring so yeah. last year i caught a 7 inch warmouth out of that pond tho. i caught a rare one too.

@zajdabneeg One reason that warmouth and green sunfish are small in some ponds is that they are preferred as prey by bass and other larger fish. The shape of warmouth makes them easier to swallow than other disc shaped types like bluegills so they're eaten before they can get big. If there aren't larger predators then they may stunt from overpopulation, same as with any fish.

@Johnnym73 I'm in SW GA just north of Tallahassee. I do sell the larvae but mostly as starter kits for people who don't want to wait to attract wild BSF. I may sell some as bait in the future and I might also sell some to pet stores as feed. Collecting and packaging small quantities for bait or feed is a bit time consuming though.

o that those flies that look like wasps. i feed my warmouths the adults that get caught in the screen on my porch

Black soldier flies are mimics of wasps. This is a defense adaptation because in reality they are defenseless.

I raise them on kitchen scraps. They're the same creature sold as Phoenix worms which cost $6 for 100, but I have literally 10's of thousands of them at any time. I have a blog about raising them and the link is in the video description if you want more info.
