1) Apparently, only bankers live lavish lifestyles in the UK.

Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines have to follow the orders of those appointed over them, so long as it doesn't go against the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ). So you could say they serve the government, but service members believe what they do is for their country (i.e. the people), not the elected/appointed officials.
