the quartz is vibrating the air around it.....the glass tube is picking up the vibrations and turning them into sound.....simple

Yes, both ends open. Normal convection flow needed for work.

Nobody knows how it works. But it is easy to build!
Simply place a heater in 1/4 from bottom of tube.
And "POWER UP"!
