As a super-experienced hoop taper, I can get one roll of electrical/vinyl tape to make it around most hoops (up to 44" or so) by using a minimal overlap. Two rolls if it is a light colour or see-through weight of tape (the colour coding stuff is usually flimsy). As a beginner taper, it would take me 2-3 rolls of background tape per hoop.
And yeah, Xavier Rudd has played here at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival many times, and I love him as hooping music!
Great vid! I've added it to a *how to make a hula hoop* website I've made. It includes websites, videos (such as yours here), pics and sources on how to make a hula hoop. You'll find the site on squidoo dot com. Then search on "how to make a hula hoop," and you'll find it. Have fun! And make a couple while you're at it. They're can't be too many hula hoops in the world. :)
I made my first hoops this weekend and I was just about to buy some tape online and found your video. What an inspiration and help! Thank's so much Xta!
I want one! Beautiful!!!

The pipe I use is 3/4" (inside diameter, I believe) 160PSI.
The background tape is 3/4" vinyl electrical tape and some harness tape (lighter weight, from Identitape), the spiral is 1/2" gaffer/spike tape.

It'd be very useful if you could mention the type of tape (gaffer/electrical, other) and width of tape you're using.

Hi Xta! Thanks for the tutorial! Could you tell us what width the pipe for the hoop is?
