There seems to be a disturbing idea entering society whereby a taser is used to punish non compliant citizens. When tazers first came out we were told they were to be used against dangerous criminals who posed an immediate danger to officers lives. Not slightly awkward traffic violators who force an officer to put in a little more effort than they are used to.

When an officer says "Turn around and put your hands on the car/bhind your back," you should do it, not raise your hands and open your mouth. Non-complilance with a lawful order during a lawful arrest leads to officers using reasonable force to effect the arrest and overcome any resistance. End result: you still go to jail, but now you ride the lightning and hold an extra charge. So, are you going to do as you're told next time?

We can't see or hear why the policeman tased the suspect. The video shot was blocked from our view, so we can't tell why the policeman decided to tase this person. However, it must have been a good reason, as they don't just do this for no reason. They have to fill out paperwork and go under an investigation.
Also, note that backup arrived quickly, so there must've been something serious going on.

The research says that OI ( officer injuries) after the 2-5 year period of deployment on "serious injuries" had no significant change. What do they consider serious? That information is not provided.

It claims that in custody deaths went up six times with in the first year of taser deployment in the small sample size they pooled from. When an officer says "Turn around and put your hands on the car/bhind your back," you should do it, not raise your hands and open your mouth. Non-complilance with a lawful order during a lawful arrest leads to officers using reasonable force to effect the arrest and overcome any resistance. End result: you still go to jail, but now you ride the lightning and hold an extra charge. So, are you going to do as you're told next time?

We can't see or hear why the policeman tased the suspect. The video shot was blocked from our view, so we can't tell why the policeman decided to tase this person. However, it must have been a good reason, as they don't just do this for no reason. They have to fill out paperwork and go under an investigation.
Also, note that backup arrived quickly, so there must've been something serious going on.

this is actually a briliant case of why tasers are deploye in the first plae and this makes for a great training vieo for oficers new to tasers. This was great use of the device and it showed officer training and resource paying off. very nice job by the officer.

As for your court links. Taser currently has a record of 71-1 in trials. I suspect that in the case you refer too, Taser will more then likely win on appeal. Plus, that case find that Taser was only 15% responsible for the death.

Edit- in the news report they didn't mention the firearm death went up as well. Back to my point. The research says that OI ( officer injuries) after the 2-5 year period of deployment on "serious injuries" had no significant change. First of all they had data from only 4 cities regarding OI. 2nd they preface that OI is considered injuries that require going to the ER. In their conclusion they say "serious" OI. What do they consider serious? That information is not provided.

Also, looking at the study done in the story you link to, the research is flawed. It claims that in custody deaths went up six times with in the first year of taser deployment in the small sample size they pooled from. Yet, oddly enough in the news report it also mentioned that the rate of firearm related death increased 2-3 times as well. Then the five year period following the initial deployment the death rate on all categories returned to pre-deployment numbers.
How does that factor?
