i have been playing arround with ogre and irrlicht opensource engines to learn about 3d
spend a lot of time lately on modeling and now i want to make something from scratch with opengl, heres a litle something i threw together while experimenting with irrlicht
watch?v=20SID_px0Rc
not that it matters lol anyways really cool stuff i know from experience a lot of time goes into it and the movement and collisions really looks good
hehe yeah i really liked them i watched most of them already :)
just following the link from email and automatically reply here lol
i really love to see the progress of something like this, how things are added and come together
ive done some simple stuff with DirectX and OpenGL and i prefer OpenGL a bit more for some reason it seems to run more smoothly and is also cross platform
once ive written something descent i will send you to see what you think hehe
Steve, I have played with Engine test 6 quite a lot recently, and have some suggestions...
1:I like adding enough objects to knock the frame rate down to 10-20 fps. This gives a sense of 'weight' to the vehicles, at 60 fps, things seem too 'fast' and harder to control.
2:The hovercraft is not fun to shoot...it just gets pushed away. It, and other vehicles seem 'stuck' to the ground too much at times. the little 4x4 is great to shoot, as it tumbles around VERY well.
The ground also 'damps' motion a lot, mines will not roll downhill, a car hits the ground and loses a LOT a momentum in that first 'touch'. The tank cannon almost always shoves cars into the ground (unless you shoot next/under the target) so some of the shots impact force is absorbed by the ground. But on the other hand, bumping a car to get it OFF the ground, then shooting it is very satisfying,
Steve, is this still a work in progress? It has been a long time since I picked it up on the Blitz basic forums... I still get out "engine test 6" (do a search, people!) and play just for the fun of blowing things up....
I've said it before on the Blitz forum but I love your work. It recalls games from the Amiga like Hunter - this is the kind of game engine I used to dream about in those days. Brilliant stuff.
Really nice physics engine, good job! I agree that good graphics dont necessarily make games better. Usually companies try too hard on adding effects and detail and miss out on things like gameplay, control and physics.
I think it looks quite fun. It looks like it has a nice flow to it and the handling of all the different vehicles seem to be fitting. After all that's what's most important in a driving game, the handling.
Hmm, I hadn't realized that you were the one that made this demo/engine/game, I though I'd heard the name Steve Goodwin from somewhere other than Fun-motion. Until now I hadn't connected the two. Also, don't take the advice of Youtube commenters too seriously (Aside from me of course) they aren't known for being the most... experienced... users around.
Like I said graphics don't make a game play better. This is my style - which has been complimented my many pro artists so I don't value your opinion. End of story.
I've been playing your demos of this since day one. I love the coherent style you have throughout. And is it ever fun to play! You've got to put some footage of the "Knight Rider" car flying through the air. That is top stuff and no mistake!
What is it with people and the need for realistic, fancy graphics? It's been prooved many a time that they don't make great games.
Please bare in mind that this is a vehicle physics engine demo - not a graphics demo. The retro flatshading with no textures is completely intentional - it's my style ( cartoon / lego ) - not a poor interpretation of realism.
Since when did creating meshes and texturing relate to physics?
Will u email me the download?

b3d.

That must've taken a lot of work!
This has pretty much blown my mind...
I'm trying to think of a question, but all I can think is "how" ?

An alpha demo was released in October - google "Polymaniacs". Game will be complete at some point next year.

Not yet but there is an alpha (v2) demo called polymaniacs. You can find it on the yakyak programming forum.

Not bad. I use Blitz3d with my own physics engine. Here's a more recent video .. that one is over a year and half old!

since it can just LAUNCH into the air for nearly a minute, and land on the other side of the playfield!
Maybe the ground is ok then :*)
I like to see cars flying about, and I think it suits this game style well.
3:I beg of you...allow the creation of user levels! I can't think of a better game suited for this-the online community should go ape over this!!!

Just started working on it again - so Engine Test 7 is on the horizon. Improved handling, much better jumping/landing etc..
steviegoodwin 4 years ago
Good to hear, Steve!
I have a request for the next demo-allow setting the # of mines separately! nothing is more fun than a level full of mines flying about!

what is the name on this game and is it a multiplayer? (it looks like a multiplayer)

Having seen this since the early version I must say it's looking great.
The style isn't all that dissimilar to katamari damacy (simple shapes, bold colours) - and the physics are clearly very good.
IMO it rocks!

you should get to meshing and textures, I'm sure you'll find it very physics oriented
