Stevie opens up a world of feeling in the listener. I cherish his music, as he truly does have that rare gift that can sweep you away and take you deep down into your heart and soul.
this is the sweetest "I gotta let you go" song ever. she/he can't get angry because, it's the truth! we'll only continue to hurt and, confuse each other. just let's be friends and, go our seperate get alongs. so long baby. bye, bye baby. if you can't get to it, get away from it.
You know what...Stevie so smooth it doesn't even sound like he's actually giving the girl the boot! I would have been like, "Okay, Stevie baby..." LOL.
This song means a lot to me. First time it hit me I had broken up with my first 'serious' girlfriend...I was 23. Relating to it again, 10 years later...now in relation to my family.
i'm in the process of letting go, after 18 years. stevie just popped into my head one morning, singing this song, helping me to move on. hadn't heard it in years. only stevie! but, hey, if you're in a break-up state of mind, marvin gaye's "to keep you satisfied" is also worth a listen.
Most definitely one of the preetiest-sounding "Divorce Songs" ever recorded.
He's addressing his loving ex, Syreeta Wright, who was also his co-writer on tunes including It's A Shame by The Spinners, and Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I'm Yours).
The magic of Stevie is that he has written and produced songs of Love and Pain, the beginings & the separations that affects all types of relationshipsThe beauty of his feelings can mirror ours in most of his songs so much." Having trouble in yours"?, Stevie has a song for it. Long live his Innervisions!
This is such a beautiful song, I love Stevie's voice and the backing vocals , the beautiful bass synth, the harmonies, excellently produced by Stevie of course. What a genius.
Thanks for the correction. My album was not in front of me. It's in NYC and I'm in NC. But you gotta admit Jim Gilstrap is the MAN!!!!! Lani Groves is that CHICK as well. Stevie doesn't PLAY when it comes to his background vocalists.
I gotta agree with bhav. I always cut ordinary pain off when the second part comes in, but ordinary pain would have rivaled the amazing flow of superwoman if he had combined it with aint no use. It makes so much sense lyrically, musically, and emotionally: Taking you from the anguish of love lost (ordinary pain) to the realization of the necessity of moving on. I also think it might work with "looking for another pure love", but probably not as well.
I'm sorry but I just don't see Ordinary pain and it ain't no use meshing together well. UNlike Superwoman?where were you, the harmonies in both songs are very different, I know this is cliche but, Ordinary sounds like a SITKOL song and it ain't no use would be very out of place on that album IMO. Just listen to both and compare to Superwoman. NOt cohesive IMO
I, too, always cut Ordinary Pain off when the 2nd part came in. The reason is, the girl had already broken his heart beyond ordinary pain so much that he was a shattered, crying wreck. Then she had to come in sassing, signifying and rubbing it in! She was crushing him under her boot telling him, "I told you my love was cruel, you fool!" I always felt so sorry for Stevie. Meanwhile people, don't touch "Superwoman." It stands alone as a Masterpiece.
@freddypknight you're right I stop listening when it gets to the second part. But sometime you have to listen to the whole song to get the whole story as to why she told Stevie to get to stepping. He was cheating and not making time for her plus she was admitting she had fault too.
@camcandy79 In spite of my reluctance to listen to Shirley Brewer's retort to Ordinary Pain, I agree with you totally. In all these years of enjoying the song, I had not listened deeply enough to know that she had accused Stevie of cheating and neglecting her. In any event, the music, singing and entire concept is, I'm sure we both agree, totally phenomenal.
@freddypknight Actually, listen to that part all the way through. Girlfriend had some serious grievances to air and let him know if he wants to step on a girl's heart, he better make sure she can't do him one better. Or, in this case, worse.
"...but, like a playboy, you said 'No'/This little girl's mind you will blow/But didn't it blow you out the box/ when I put my stuff on key and lock...You're cryin' big crocodile tears/Don't match the ones I cried for years..."
beautiful vocals , i love the way you hear his very low nass voice in the backing vocals. and his beaitiful tenor lead vocal. Also the bass and the rhodes piano. A class song.
OH YEAH...if you like this as a break up song....listen to "Upset Stomach" from the Last Dragon sound track. I've never heard a song that is about something so sad but u can't stop dancing while you're listening.
:( i was glad wen i herd dis song for the first time 2 years ago, i mean wen a yong guy breaks up with a gyal it seems like no one knows how u feel , but its weird but the wrds in dis song made me feel sum1 a long tyme ago felt exactly wat im feeling , shows how amazing stevie is !!
I've seen Stevie in concert 3 times in the 80's..St Louis, Frankfurt Germany and Chicago. The Hotter than July album was out and Go Home (which I logged on to hear today) was my favorite. It ain't no use is gotta be one of my Stevie all time favorites. I wish he woulda done it in concert.
I reinterate deeply what I posted 4 months ago about Stevie. Reread my post below!*
Unfortuantely, at this time I am going through a fresh break up myself also. But as soon as I played this song I started hearing Stevie's words and feelings and it encouraged me to feel better also!!!* Always, a door closing is a door opening.
I'm in the process of getting a divorce. Regardless of what I'm feeling, I can always turn on a Stevie album and find a song that relates to what I'm going through. This is my song at the moment. He's right about "we're not each other's everything".
I didnt want to say anything but this song is cool but also remember "They wont go when I go" And "Now that we ve ended" by Syreeta. These arent only about divorce they were also about grouping up. Stevie didnt re-sign with Motown for 2 years in the late 60s because he got tired of doing "bubblegum pop" and the in-house focus groups. He went indy and released 2 albums only coming back to Motown in 1970 to produce the Spinners "Its a shame". These were the BEST Motown years.
This is the perfect breakup song. It makes me feel good about my breakups. Most of them are too sad. But Stevie brings it home... you gotta remember there's a reason for the break up in the first place. "So long baby, bye-bye baby."
Stevie's music is so timeless that it reflects the karma of life! ... No matter what the decade is of his music, you can turn some stevie on and it sounds and feels just like new! ... all over again. This man has a song for everyday, every moment and every situation we go through. No doubt a stevie song will either encourage you and keep you happy through a great time or keep you calm and collected through a sad and down time. TRULY A GENIUS!
I have been looking for this song for YEARS!!!Every break up I had I sang this to myself. It keeps me strong. I am playing it now while my man is sleep over and over. Tonight is the night for goodbye.
You all are so right!!! I only wish I had remembered this song at the time of my VERY painful break-up, for it would've undoubtedly made things much easier for me. Instead, I weeped and felt sorry for myself and finally decided someone else was gonna hurt besides me and took revenge...STUPID move, because now I have to get over the shame. Stevie is an amazing Genius & I thank God for giving him to us
