we listened to this as kids, and i still love it today. me and my sisters would sing it to my dad..... he didnt care for it lol. anyway, i still have the record we listened to 34 years ago and its in great shape. thank heaven for harry belafonte! :)
Ah...the first album I ever memorized, or tried to. I was two. 1959. They'd put this record on and my toddler ass would channel harry belafonte....eerie but fun!
Evidently, Canadian pressings of "Belafonte at Carnegie Hall" would have used the Red Seal label - given that U.S. pressings used the regular black label.
@wmbrown6 Canadian pressings of both classical (LM/LSC) and Original Cast (LOC/LSO) series were issued with the famous Red Seal label. Moreover, not all RCA Original cast series U. S. Pressings used the black label, since the first pressings' label (1950 to 1954) was green.
@wmbrown6 Unlike RCA U. S. pressings, RCA 60's Canadian pressings were issued with "large Nipper" (shaded dog) with silver lettering until early 1969. Greetings
Fantastic album! I also couldn't believe how great the sonics are on this Harry B. album. Surely whoever cut the lacquers must have been a very skilled guy!
It's not dragging. This is the correct speed as it was played live in 1959. It was actually the first version I heard. In my opinion it is much better then the studio. This one has much more "feeling" to it.
lovely song love this man so sweet ..in the 70's 1973 i meet him harry beautiful man my mum was so happy to meet him too with tears harry hug'ed her my mum ...befor mum pass'ed away she said to me she going to have tea with harry ! i thought it was a lovely thing to say god bless her ....
we used to play this when we were kids and this is the 80's.and my sisters and i would dance on the piano area singing this song while dad watched hehehehe. looove the whole album. nostalgic now.
I can so relate to Andrellen...we did the same thing. I can still see my dad sitting in his swivel rocking easy chair...my mom puttering in the kitchen...and me lying half under the coffee table....singing just being a kid..........."oh nOo..my daddy can't be ugly sOo".........:o)
Grew up on this and know every word, every nuance. Spent countless hours laying in front of my parents stereo (or was it mono?) singing along with Harry. My favorites were always Darlin Cora, Sylvie and Shanandoah.
I've got a copy of that old LP, but yours sounds much less scratchy and chewed up than mine. I used to sing this song to my kids; my daughter called it the "Monkey's Uncle" song...??!!
In case people don't know, Harry B. is a wonderful and kind human being, and I consider it a bit of a privelege to be alive during his lifetime. Thanks for sharing the tune!
Yes I am lucky... this copy is my Grandpa's and I'm just "borrowing" it from him (he knows he'll never see it again). Doesn't matter though; the reason it sounds so good I think is because he never much cared for Belafonte!
Wow!...that was quick. Sometime when it isn't so friggin' late, I might want to pick your brains about how you digitized it. Thanks a million, again, for sharing.
@VinylToVideo i used to have this album from my parents, i'm 45 years old, i grew up on this,, my record however, is lost,, it was very scratched, but you could listen to it. i would sing to it even at the age of 3 or 4. my dad had the 8 track player in his car we would listen to canegiee hall evrywhere, that was in the early early 70's i must say, life was so magical at that time, was a very exciting time to be a kid. i miss it allot. not that these days are much diferent, it's just colder
I played this song for my little niece just the other day and she immediately loved it:). I even got both her and laughing up a storm with my silly antics while listening to this as well.
Nice audio I have this record! I love this record !! but I don't have a turntable just the records in my sisters basement. thank you peace to you and yours
Yes, remarkable clear audio, but this not only due to the recording but the used playback equipment is also very important. What turntable did you use and what cartridge is screwed in the tone arm? 5 stars!
This is a fairly decent Pioneer PL-730 (I believe) from the early 80s with a Pioneer moving coil cartridge. This is not one of Pioneer's top of the line turntables but is definitely a very good one and with a fine high output cartridge from Pioneer's MC series. And yes the recording has something to do with it as well; RCA Victor's "Living Stereo" series of the late 50s and early 60s included the best albums ever released sound wise.
Thanks for my trip down memory lane. I grew up an Air Force brat, and my dad had this record on tape, so that we could sing along on all our car trips. I hope you post more from this concert. I love every single song on it, from the funny "Birds and the Bees," to the spiritual, like "Take My Mother Home." I swear even after so many years of not hearing it, I can still feel the orchestra and wince at the very sounds of "when they was nailing in the nails." Thank you for this treasure.

I'm not sure about this slow version...
it looks like the record is played at the wrong speed, can it be? it's reallly slow...

Uh, no. This was recorded with a webcam.
VinylToVideo 3 years ago
The long play albums played at 33 rpm. Time it and you will see that it is the right speed. If you are used to watching 45rpm, it looks slower.

If you allowed for ratings you would have loads of 5 stars, do you know that? Harry Belafonte's best track imo.

We're sure lucky to have this though. The recording technology used was absolutely top of the line for 1958 and I feel it's still unmatched today.
