@HappyHumanism My thoths on the matter is that they were just conserned about appropriate behaviors and positive results. In the real lunsh to Mars, they could be some women, but thats another story.

@PierreRMB From a scientific point of view, I think they should just enlist those most capable, intellectually and psychologically, in doing the job. Now, there definitely are women that fit those perimeters, so it seems almost sexist that there were any on the team. It probably is not, and there is probably a splendid explanation, however I just thought the current way a little strange.

In the simulator, you are sealed in as you would be in a real spacecraft, but they have a device known as a "Chicken Switch". If you start freaking, you just press this switch,and it alerts the guys outside and they'll release you. Unfortunately, in a real spacecraft in orbit, this is not an available option!
