It reveals some important things about MGS3 and it helps you understand about the origins of the Patriots. In short, it's preps you up well for MGS4. I don't think it's necessary but I highly recommend it.

Liquid hasn't mentioned one thing about the Patriots in the Shadow Moses Incident. No one in that entire game knew about them except two people, one who we still see now, and one that was underground before his presidency; Ocelot and Solidus.
Liquid wanted to free himself of the curse of being the inferior clone, however it was Solid Snake who was the inferior clone. Liquid himself was the superior one.
Since Ocelot is the son of The Sorrow (inheriting the nature of ESP [Ocelot not being aware of that matter either]), and having the memories and thoughts of Liquid, was what sparked him to lose his ego, and then the sub-concious mind of Liquid would take over the body, and since he knows of Solidus' and Ocelot plans, he himself decided to take out the Patriots and follow the footsteps of their Father, Big Boss. Outer Haven, controlling war itself.
Solidus being a former politican, wanted to break the hold of control and remove the Patriots.
Liquid, however, wanted (at first) the remains of Big Boss so that he can become a superior clone, and build an army of his own. Now after the Big Shell Incident, and in a new body with the worry of being a clone (advanced aging) he will follow the exact same steps as his father once did, and create a nation of soldiers, and rid of the Patriots once and for all.
Solid Snake was working for the military who was under the Patriots before the Manhattan Incident. Once he knew about the military, he, alongside Otacon created Philanthropy, an Anti-Metal Gear group. This was only after the Shadow Moses Incident, his main role at the time was to rid of any Metal Gear that was to be erected. Now that Campbell needed his help, I'm sure this isn't under the order of the government, because they have their own worries. The PMCs alongside Liquid.

Portable Ops is no side game, it is part of the storyline and you need to play it, to know some important things about Big Boss and the patriots.
When you play a MGS titel you need about 10-15 hours so it is not that long.

i was the right eye that naked snake lost. and its not an eye patch that solid snake has in MGS4 but i think its called Snake Eye or something, which is kinda like binoculars and other features.

Between Liquid & Snake, Liquid was the dominant although between the 3 brothers, Solidus was the perfect clone, he was a complete copy of Big Boss.
I know most of us are pretty much pissed off Solid is not going to continue after MGS4 events, but I can't help wonder another clone might pop up. Also the narrator says he's going to continue Snake's war, I think it's Raiden. MG:RAIDEN, doesn't sound bad at all but Snake! Snaaaaaake!! this is a must have game of the century! yeah u heard me!

no way dude. i think raiden is gonna die in mgs4 and some trailers indicate that he will. my guess is that maybe the son of big boss will continue or a completely new character. at this point no one is right and no one is wrong, we all have to wait and see. it has to be someone that the mgs fans would wanna play as. some say that johnny character will continue the game but i wouldnt buy the games anymore to play as him

I would bet my money a new clone is gonna pop up. This is Hideo we're talkin about n anythin can happen plus we don't kno who has Big Boss' remains, some say the US Gov, others say the Patriots. Even if facts indicates either, still its not 100%. Right now I'm hoping a new clone comes pops up. Les Enfants Terribles so far is hush hush, we only kno 3 clones existed, who's to say there's more than 3 (fingers crossed)

The government in MGS1 was ran by George Sears aka Solidus Snake - it's a fair assumption The Patriots have the remains of Big Boss atm.
And Big Boss to our knowledge did Eva once, I'm not sure if her been in MPO is cannon but I'd guess it isn't, and he's also sterile because he was an atomic test subject at bikini atoll so the they had a child theory still is missing any evidence at this point, it's interesting she's been dubbed as big mama in 4 though - there's sure to be some meaning in it:)

try the original first then work your way up to snake eater. remember that snake eater is the prequel but you should play the original first because you will miss CQC. or you could always read the story on wiki but i suggest you dont as these games are nothing short of awesome.

Liquid hasn't mentioned one thing about the Patriots in the Shadow Moses Incident. No one in that entire game knew about them except two people, one who we still see now, and one that was underground before his presidency; Ocelot and Solidus.
Liquid wanted to free himself of the curse of being the inferior clone, however it was Solid Snake who was the inferior clone. Liquid himself was the superior one.

Since Ocelot is the son of The Sorrow (inheriting the nature of ESP [Ocelot not being aware of that matter either]), and having the memories and thoughts of Liquid, was what sparked him to lose his ego, and then the sub-concious mind of Liquid would take over the body, and since he knows of Solidus' and Ocelot plans, he himself decided to take out the Patriots and follow the footsteps of their Father, Big Boss. Outer Haven, controlling war itself.

Same targets but with different goals.
Solidus being a former politican, wanted to break the hold of control and remove the Patriots.
Liquid, however, wanted (at first) the remains of Big Boss so that he can become a superior clone, and build an army of his own. Now after the Big Shell Incident, and in a new body with the worry of being a clone (advanced aging) he will follow the exact same steps as his father once did, and create a nation of soldiers, and rid of the Patriots once and for all.

Solid Snake was working for the military who was under the Patriots before the Manhattan Incident. Once he knew about the military, he, alongside Otacon created Philanthropy, an Anti-Metal Gear group. This was only after the Shadow Moses Incident, his main role at the time was to rid of any Metal Gear that was to be erected. Now that Campbell needed his help, I'm sure this isn't under the order of the government, because they have their own worries. The PMCs alongside Liquid.

naked snake is big boss and yah hes dead. Solid snake killed him in Metal gear 2 (not to be confused with Metal gear solid 2)And hes not in MGS4 atleast nothings been said about him being in it. Solid snake is Big bosses clone. In MGS1 you play as Solid, MGS2 you play as raiden, MGS3 you play as big boss back in 60s, MGS4 you play as solid snake And yah solid snake is old snake.
