  • Grand Illusion! One of my all time fave albums by Styx

  • When TS joined the band they went from great to one of the best rock bands ever

  • @Aforgomon1

    Amen

  • reeeally luv tommy shaw's voice

  • @TheMagicpower66 he still kicks butt!!!!!

  • FOR CARSON RODGERS: Growing up my father was bi-polar...He was loving / kind most of the time, and a monster the rest of the time. I've grown up, moved states, changed my name..but cant get away from what I came from. I love you Dad and always will, and I'm sorry for the distance...I do remember the good times..

  • I live in mississippi my mom works at one of the casino's I'm 16 I wanna go so bad to see styx :(

  • E minor or F minor? Obviously my pitch is off lol. Great tune both w & m!!!

  • @CypherInfinity2 I believe it's e minor.

  • Grand Illusion - Styx best lp.

  • one of my top 5 styx songs

  • What a great song!!

  • I saw Styx, 38 Special and REO Speedwagon all in one night and it was awesome, they definitely got their chops, I just wish DeYoung was there.

  • A voice to make grown men cry

  • THE ONLY BAND TO HAVE EVER SOLD THREE PLATIMUN ALBUMS IN A ROW, NOT THE BEATLES, NOT THE STONES, NOT MICHAEL JACKSON.

  • @ratlrbil Styx is one my favorite bands. But with all due respect, and according to Billboard, Styx had 5 consecutive platinum albums. Rush, another one of my favorites, is third behind the Beatles and Rolling Stones, with 8 consecutive platinum albums. MJ had 6. (Platinum-selling compilation albums not included.)

  • @ShutlOrbit Niiice:). My top 3 favourite bands: Styx, Rush, and Pink Floyd (tied with Roger Waters' music gone solo as I can't decide between the two (of course), lol.

  • @CypherInfinity2 Yes, Pink Floyd has an amazing, one-of-a-kind catalog of music. Their music never gets old.

  • @ShutlOrbit I listened to JY in an interview, it was way before I wrote this butsome number of double or triple platinum albums they released consecutively is a record (no pun intended)

  • @ratlrbil You are only as good as your last album, In the case of STYX everyone just face palmed.

  • @ratlrbil It's actualy 3 MULTI PLATINUM ALBMUMS in a row....not disagreeing with you. Just pointing out a point of how great this sooooooooooooooooo underated band was!!!!!

  • @ratlrbil If all the master tracks for the Stones somehow got erased, I would not lose any sleep! However, Styx...now that's well thought out music! Can;t see how anyone could like the Stones. Really! Even Charlie Watts said back in 1992 that he thought that their recent music was somewhat getting somewhere unlike before! I hate the Rolling Stones and the type of people that adhere to it! Sorry folks, that's just how I feel!

  • @daonfpe now i said that about a song (not the whole band, the song) by Guns and Roses, and I got yelled at within a day. How'd you get away with it?

  • Also, these RUSH, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and even Triumph heads have also contributed to a rather leaving of a bad taste and sediment in my inner most being! It doesn't take much you know!

  • @ratlrbil Are you serious ?

  • i spend my life and sell my soul on the road but i'm still in the dark cuz i cant seem to find the light alone

  • The best Styx song ever recorded!!!!!

  • since i was 7, styx was my muscial expression. i am 47 now and their music is still my expression....test of time, indeed!

  • I love the story Tommy tells. It's amazing how one awesome group inspired another. I can hear the Kansas influence in this song.

  • As much as I enjoy ALL the great stuff, this is one that really speaks to me on a very personal level, what with the way my life has gone this year alone. I went from having these high aspirations to now having almost nothing for all my efforts. This song can uplift me and get me to my ideal plane of existence. Thank you, StyxFan93, for posting this. You have no idea how much this means to me. Again, thank you, my friend.

  • I saw Styx and Yes last night and it was a fucking AMAZING show.

  • First saw Styx 1978 in Chicago...since then I've seen them all over the country over 20 times with bands REO, Kansas, Journey, Foreigner and others...many different venues...ALWAYS a great show!!!! This coming week I will get to see them, for the first time, at what may be the BEST venue...Red Rocks in Morrison, Colorado. Looking forward to this one for sure!!!!

  • I set up concerts for a living(22yrs)and Styx&REO last year in SA TX was one of the best collaborations I've seen in Quite a while ......:D Cj

  • i saw yes and styx with my dad on the 4th of july in camden they owend the show yes was just a bunch of old farts

  • Ever since I first heard this song in 1995, it's been one of my theme songs.

  • Just saw these boys last night at the kickoff of their U.S Summer Tour with Yes. They blew Yes out of the water. GET TICKETS!!

  • @MrGreglander i was there too yes couldnt stand up to them

  • @MrGreglander that is ignorant yes put on a great show too and they both blew my mind

  • Song of my teenage years.

  • Not only a great song, one of the greatest guitar solos ever recorded

Very seldom both found in one song!!

  • @AnnaAnnaYes VERY,VERY SELDOM....ALMOST UNHEARD OF.......EGGSELLLENT!!!!!!Cj

  • @chrisjewett63 I'm glad you agree!!

  • @AnnaAnnaYes email me......?

  • Not the same without Dennis DeYoung.

  • @wdouglocke The puzzle never looks or sounds the same with a piece missing.

  • tommy my brothah... i hope you get to read this. best recording ever baby. everybody let me know what you think. commonwithit!!!! everybody say OOO... EVERBODY SAY OOO... GO TOMMY... GO TOMMY...YO GONNA PARTY ... LIKE IT'S HER BIRTHDAY

  • This is such a well-written song that speaks to me as much now as it did when I heard it in grade school. Very much underrated. IMO, it's introspective theme is universal.

  • tommyの作品のなかでも、若々しい作風で好きです。guitar soloも詩にmatchしていて良いですね。

  • love tommy's voice...

  • I had a GF in HS ane we were in the back seat listening to this 8 track and she has such a hairy pussy I felt like a man in the Wilderness

  • @paperboy6996 awsome

  • @paperboy6996 that is the shit!

  • This is surely in the top 10 ever of rock ballads ! electrifying!

  • siiiiap add nih..........

  • Creepy picture...great song!

  • @JimSVoit Thats because its the Grand Illusion =P

  • Awesome! Thank you for posting this timeless classic!

  • One of The Best Rock Albums.....

  • Just absolutely love this song...

  • Oh man this brings me back!!! Love the Solo!

  • Great song!

  • Rockn Roll....True Rockn Roll is now outcast to classic Rock stations. The guitar Solo is dead and Modern Rock is where it's at ????? WTF ??

Alternative or Modern Rock takes no thought in the musical aspect of music anymore. Journey, Styx, Reo SpeedWagon, Boston, and all bands like them are in my opinion the last of the true Rockn Roll era. I have Boycotted anything having to do with todays modern Rock.

  • @Tom6093 Try Avenged Sevenfold.. every song by them is full of solos.. im a younger fan of Styx and i can understand where the appeal is lost in the new forms of metal with all of these bands emerging with mediocre guitar riffs.. personaly i enjoy alot of these bands as well as classic bands just because of the generation that im in.. but there are still bands out there that although they may still not be your "cup of tea" are undenyably talented.

  • @EscapingGahennah Yeah, but there all underground now. Most of the todays music that I'm interested in came from listening to Pandora. These bands get hardly any radio play, and are hard to find in record stores.

  • @EscapingGahennah *Clap Clap Clap*

  • when i was like 14 and i heard styx was breaking up i looked on the back of my Kilroy Was here album, and wrote the fan club a letter telling them how muchit ment to me that they stay together.. im 46 now and they are still rocking .. thank you so much styx

  • @MrGlenntipton There's only one original Styx member left. So .......yeah, they broke up,.

  • alot of ppl didnt notice the man on horseback in the albumn cover

  • Fuckin A

  • ohhh man, that felt so good to hear, thank you !!

  • They don't play songs like this on the radio cuz, well

cuz songs like this would blow the average pebble's mind.

    REALLY!

And really, I'm glad they didn't blow this out like they did with so many other greats.

Come Sail Away, off this album

    Money -Pink Floyd

    Stairway to Heaven -Zep

And so many, too many others

There's some really great songs I can't even stand to listen to any more, I'd rather change the channel.

  • hey, have a listen to an original called " IN YOUR MIND " by andrew gerbasi. I know he's a huge styx fan. good tune too. Post a comment there and see if you agree. cheers.

  • RUNNING WITH THE TIDE, NEVER QUITE KNOWING WHY,SOME TIME IT MAKES NO SENSE AT ALL......

  • One of the best.

  • waiting for this on here the Longest time!!! Thank you for posting!!!

  • "what kind of man have I become? All of the years I've spent in search of myself -and I'm still in the dark 'cause I ... can't seem to find the light alone" -Sing it Tommy (Shaw) ...Awesome song...

  • soup to nuts, one of their best. check out equinox and crystal ball.

  • The most underrated band ever!

  • I still have TWO copies of this album on vinyl. A BIG THANKS to StyxFan93

  • I feel like styx needs to be more available. I've introduced this band to many people and all agree, awsome band!!!!!!!!! I've been a fan since equinox. Thanks for posting and happy holidays!

  • R.I.P. John Panozzo!!!!!

  • @HallPassExpired, back in the Fall of 1983, when I was a 19 yr Room Service waiter working at the Four Season's Hotel in San Antonio, I had a chance to serve some hot tea to John Panozzo, a very humble and laid-back person, he asked me if I was planning on going to their show (the Kilroy was Here Tour), I must admit that I hated the Kilroy song because it was played so often on radio back then. Anyway, John Panozzo gave me free two tickets, one for me and for my girlfriend and I love the show!!

  • @proudhawkeye great story,

    i never met him,

just loved him and neal pert as best drummers of there time.

  • Good song to play every year on New Year's Eve or even New Year's Day.

  • i'm kinda new 2 Styx. i'm just checking out some songs by them just 2 see how i like it.

  • saw them perform this at the salem va show oct 25th 2010--soooooo amazing!!!

love hearing it over and over!!!

  • I think when all of the smoke cleared, this became the best song on the album for me.

  • This album is CLASSIC!!! THIS track though broke me STRAIGHT down the other day. Had me crying uncontrollably probably because I lived in confusion growing up on the SAME streets the group did.

  • @esauwilldie1 Completely agree with you. I remember when this album came out and we listened to it over and over. Gotta love the old vinyl. For years I would play this song every New Years Eve and reflect on the year past and the year to come. I'm not religious about that reflection anymore, but this has been one of the tougher years of my life for a number of factors. I'll definitely be listening to this one again in a couple weeks while reflecting and planning.

  • I love this song so much!!! Back when i was a teenager in the 70's this song was like my anthem. I'd listen to it over and over. I really felt like this song nailed the longing and loneliness in my heart, but it was a little like suicide food to me!

I'm not meaning to preach here, so believe what you like, but my testimony is this; that I carried that longing in my heart for years after. It was only released for me when I found a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

  • Unbelievable! No dislikes...so far so good!

  • @bucky468 2 dislikes!!! WTF!!!

  • This SIDE of the album has to be in the TOP ten of rock albums. I hated when it was over.

  • @DrDougMusic1 I miss when you had to flip the records. I remember when I was little that I thought that album was over when it hit the end. Never knew you had to flip it. :-P

  • Hey, is "Too much time on my hands" one of the songs from Grand Illusion or Pieces of Eight?

  • @dangerdantheone Its from Paradise theater

  • @kwl1236 OKay..cause THAT was the Song they played that wasn't on Grand Illusion or Pieces of Eight

  • NICE SONG

  • 1:28

  • Best tune on the album!

  • "Another year has passed me by yet I still look at myself and cry, what kind of man have I become? all of the years I spent in search of myself."

Sometimes it makes no sense at all. (very profound Lyrics.)

  • @geo386, I was laid-off from my job on 8/30/2009 and it took me almost a year (12/1/2010) to find a temp position that last only six weeks. I pray to God that something full-time and permanent will come my way soon. Geo386, the lyrics that you printed describe exactly how I feel and then some!! My self-esteem have been through hell and back. Thank God that my wife works and that I am still receivining the tail end of my unemployment benefits. I have a Master's Degree but no job!!

  • @proudhawkeye Thanks for the kind response I lost my job over a year ago and not only that my fiance left me and I was removed from the apartment we resided in. I believe we as men feel we must show a bold bravado in the face of adversity, never allowing ourselves to feel pain or strife except to ourselves. I pray for you and all those in similar predicaments in the world.

  • AWESOME SONG!

  • one of my favourite albums ever

  • wanna be Rush much?

  • guitar at 3:16 rules

  • man they still Rock saw them last year it ruled they toured with reo and 38 special

my favorite song of all time by them

  • man they still Rock saw them last year it ruled they toured with reo and 38 special

  • love tommy's voice...GREAT SONG

  • this gay band?

  • AWESOME this was my favorite song for YEARS !!! Thanks

  • Always loved this tune! Thought it and Castle Walls were the most underrated tunes on the album!

  • @gremmiehodad you got that right

  • This is one of the best songs off this album....loved it then as i do now (2010) !!!!

  • un gran tema por muchos olvidado

  • My favorite Styx song. Just came to mind. Saw them back in May 2010. They still sounded as great as the two times that I saw them in the seventies.

  • Comment removed

  • I love how DDY solos on his synth at somewhat low volumes throughout the second verse and chorus. It adds a perfect touch without getting in the way of Tommy's vocals.

  • k, this is my favorite. Always loved this, and i learned how to play it on guitar.

  • is that younger James Hetfield 2nd from left?

  • @tacomonster98 No it's guitarist James Young - JY for short - founding & longtime Styx band member. BTW this is the original prog-metal here folks.

  • Uh I meant original American prog-metal - or at least the roots of it came from Styx. Let me clear that up. Prog began in the UK then Canada & US followed soon after (Styx & Rush came out at practically the same time.)

  • Love Styx! One of the best bands of the 70's and 80's

  • I always felt Grand Illusion was their summit, everything before it was a Grand Buildup ...and most everything after sort of left me flat. Thanks for putting this song up.

  • Magic record...Timeless, soulful

  • I loved this song, but it sounds like they borrowed it from Kansas!

  • Best song they ever made....

  • One of the best album sides made... grouped with UFO lights out & Aerosmith get your wings... one of the best musicians Chicago produced in that era....... Billy Corgan was later. If you don't fall in love with one of these songs on this album, you are DEAD!!!

  • great birthday song!!!

  • This song is so classic. :] LOVE IT!

  • I heard this song was about the Nam war.

  • Classic Styx!! Excellent album cut that should've been released as a single.

How ABBA, Prince & Madonna get in the Rock Hall before Styx is beyond me?!

  • @bucky468 I gigged LA club scene for years and the talent to recognition ratio is absurd. Saw thes guys a few years back in So Cal. Timeless.

  • Greatest guitar solo Shaw ever did.

  • Love it!

  • the whole album is dynamite !

  • Yeah.

This entire album just personifies the essence of Win.

  • the amazing thing is as screwed up as i was when this came out, i knew it was something incredible, and to this day 30+ years later it still is.

  • could you please add the lyrics?

  • Sometimes it makes no sense at all.

  • Great song !! I play it every B-Day !! It speaks to me & has helped me thru some Very Very rough times..

  • This is one of my favorite tracks of all time. Radio is all about MONEY. They don't care if a song is good or not as long as producer X gives them shitloads of money to play their commercial crap then they cramm it down our throats and make us think that it is the greatest music ever. But some of us know better and make guys like Styx cult heroes because they are REAL musicians putting out timeless stuff.

  • @alcatras4--very well said my friend

  • @alcatras4 Some people were smart enough to understand what you are saying. I remember reading back in the day that bands like Styx could get a album to go platnimum in the time in took the Rolling Stones to get 1 hit single off a record. And they said that Styx was a "faceless" band. ROFLOL.

  • @alcatras4 SO TRUE SO SAD

  • @alcatras4 you are right and I love You.

  • What an incredible album! Not a bad song on it!!!

  • Never ceases to amaze me how Styx has been so under-rated and dogged for all these years. Their music and musicianship are so awesome and so much better than most of the stuff put out 10, 20, 30 years ago--not to mention the dreck today. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, anyone?

  • @tsfanoh10 what about rush..they have been around forever and no mention of the RnR hall of shame

  • This song was never radio friendly. Maybe that was a goog thing. The stupid stations would have played it to death. It's too good.

  • @tripleH1313 It wasn't radio friendly only because of it's length. It was a rare thing, back then, for a song longer than 4 minutes to get any airplay. Today it isn't quite as bad. Only problem now is that the current music sucks, compared to this!

  • Tommy's vocals are incredible!! I love this song!!

  • Awsome post havent heard this since my 45's

  • The best of the best.

This song was my favority one since I know it

  • still a awesome album

  • Of course, still my favority stix song and album.

    salute you aphasia from méxico
