I love when people throw out "get a life." String figures are a cross-cultural tradition that have been performed since primitive man. Ironically, the same people telling this guy to get a life are probably sitting on the couch, fingers stained from an empty bag of Cheetos, watching Family Guy right now. Their life is filled with the blind ambition to find the next thing that will entertain them for five more minutes.

If you pay 25 dollars, you get a member ship for a year, and they give you a free bulletin (a book showing different figures and how to make some of them, including the history behind all the string figures) and you get the back issues of their magazines that show fully illustrated instructions. Most the stuff on you tube, I already know how to do, or have done it before. There is a book published by IFSA called Fascinating String Figures....

Some people call it just "cat's cradle." I call it an opening. Depending on the trick, you use your index fingers or your middle fingers for the opening. Sorry... got me there.
If anybody can post videos on Nauruan String Figures, that would be frickin' awesome. String Figures from Nauru Island are normally very complex to make, but are very fascinating. Its like knitting with just a loop of string and your fingers. Theres actually a book on them written by Honor Maude.

String figures could have a different name depending on who teaches them where. (IE Osage Diamonds vs. Jacob's Ladder) When I learned this in elementary school in California, my teacher told me this figure was called Many Stars. Thank you for teaching me another name.
