OK where are the clips from "Invasion of the Dinosaurs"? That whole story easily needs to be in the top 2. And the one with the boom mike on the sunglasses was hardly noticable; if you're going to nit-pick on that then show the scanner from "The Three Doctors" where you could see the reflection of the missing TARDIS walls and all the cameras & crew in every shot.
I Disagree with No.10, Just it's Bubble wrap painted Green but who cares, It doesn't matter what it is, It looks coool. Well Number 7 there is absolutly nothing wrong it what so ever. The power of the Dalek scene I wouldn't have noticed until you pointed it out. I'm glad theres so new series too. The whole new series is shit. One again, Tin Foil monsters, Who Cares, It looks good. It's only because you keep seeing it as Tin Foil.
I don't care if these effects are not up to today's standards, all these stories (aside from the 4th) are great stories, so the effects shouldn't matter. They didn't care about having eye-popping effects, all they wanted was a brilliant story, with entertaining and memorable characters.
All these people moaning in the comments that "Nuhu's effects are crappy compared to the old ones" must be fucking blind! Just because they used a model instead of CGI doen't automatically make it any better. Most of the time models look like...models. CGI spaceships give you the dynamic movements that models simply can't.
What about the Rat in The Talons Of Weng-Chiang? The robot feet in The Robots Of Death? The trees in The Mark Of The Rani? The CGI explosion in Rose? The CGI dustbin in Rose?
You've missed out loads which are far more glaring than the ones in your clips. And The Green Death doesn't deserve one mention here, never mind three!
Also the captions between clips are too long and mostly unnecessary. Just play the clips! If they need explaining or pointing out, the effect can't be all that bad!
No mention of the flimsy space suits in The Moonbase? The wall of spikes in The Rescue? The CSO in Underworld? The wobbly walls in Invasion Of The Dinosaurs? The Dinosaurs in Invasion Of The Dinosaurs? The Beast from The Androids Of Tara? The flying car in Planet Of The Spiders? The Nimon from The Horns Of Nimon? The pre-cut collapsing walls in The Invisible Enemy and Nightmare Of Eden? The snake in Kinda? The Bandrils in Timelash? The Morloxes in Timelash? The Timelash in Timelash?
All a little unfair as they had to make the show with a ball of string and a half penny! Where's the Murka? Truely dreadful, but CGI is worse as everyone thinks CGI, no power of imagination.
so how long did it take you to hunt all this down? surely if you hated doctor who you wouldn't care to know the names of the episodes and cut out pieces of it.
These were the classics man! They didn't have the things we have now. And 4 isn't even a special effect! Its a mistake, so that doesn't even deserve to go on the list!
@2150dalek The resolution wasn't that bad in the 60's I could tell watching reruns Dr. Who's special effects was generally worse than Lost in Space(first season generally pretty good for the time except in black and white), Star Trek, and The Outer Limit(also done in black and white but otherwise generally better).
WHAT! The dinosaurs in INVASION OF THE DINOSAURS aren't #1? You disappoint me! Most reviewers seem to elbow each other out of the way in deriding IOTD, even though it is such a superb story that the puppet dinosaurs are quickly overlooked. Likewise, ARK IN SPACE Is such a superb story that most viewers don't even notice the bubble wrap.
The GREEN DEATH's actual giant fly is FAR superior to what Nu WHO would do: create a CGI fly that is the cartoon it appears to be!
To be fair bubble wrap wasn't anywhere near as ubiquitous in the UK circa 1975, having only been invented a decade before. If people were to have seen it at all it would have been a tiny rectangle.
Now with Ebay you can't shift for the stuff. If you hadn't seen it much it would be a quite effective cheap alien skin. You can't knock the guys performance though. Scared the crap out of me when I was five. The glasses thing isn't a special effect so it doesn't count.
Nu-hu has much worse effects. E.g. anyone at home can make a CGI Dalek go up a flight of stairs, but in the original series we get a real one! In fact all the CGI effects look worse than any rubber monster, cuz they look unrealistic AND virtual. And even when they make a real costume in nu-hu it's designed crappily like the man with rhino head, man with fly head etc.
They are not curtain with Dalek's painting on. They are full scale images cardboard cut-outs of Daleks. Care to tell us a more convincing way to show armies of Daleks in 1966?
@HTprods since they dont move at all, why not just make actual 3d models out of cardboard, instead of a curtain or sheet of cardboard? its obvious from looking at it that it is a flat surface with a 2d image painted onto the front. using a slightly bigger room if need be is not a problem, and it obtains an actual realistic look with little effort. the people who made dr who however werent concerned with quality video, writing, acting, or effects. not sure what they were honestly.
@HTprods anyway it wasn't that the BBC lacked funds, it was actaully the Daleks who did this themsleves, they ran out of funds to built a complete army so just made a painted curtain/cardboard cut outs because they thought the stupid humans wouldn't notice.
You know. Given the budget that they had in the 60s and 70s they did pretty damn good. And even today's standards. We watch these shows not just about the effects but the story lines. And yes those are too crappy. If you are only watching these just to pick ou tthe bad then you are...who cares. Enjoy the shows and forget about the damn effects or reflections in sun glasses. Its Dr. Who and given whats out there today. I'd rather take my chances with this then get infected with Stupids Disease.
@IHateMarioKartWii Tbf, that was good special effects. I mean, there is nothing faulty or bad quality about the effects. The story and idea is just stupid
@IHateMarioKartWii i actually found that to be good fx. i dont know why everyone else says its not. I mean the one from the unicorn and the wasp. Maybe you mean a different one.
One of my favorite cheap ones is the fact that several of the maggots used in "The Green Death" when they were blown up were actually blown up condoms. THat said, overall you picked some of the best "worst" effects from the series. One minor quibble though - the glasses was actually what's known as a flick flub - meaning a mistake by production that made the actual story. It's not CGI or other effects. ;)
Several of those selections felt more like nitpicking than anything else. You could see the crew reflected in the old lady's shades? That's not even a special effect! And nothing on classics like the First- and Second Doctors' era Cybermen costumes, or the Sixth Doctor's regeneration?
Also, what was with the sound? I couldn't hear a word anyone said. And since several of those clips went on and on, it really showed.
To those saying that dr who is all cgi nowadays... Have you ever seen dr who confidential? Yes, cgi is used to enhance things, as without it, people just wouldn't watch it except the real fans, but most, if not all of the monsters are people in costumes, with the exception of things which would be physically impossible for an actor to play.
The number one worst special effect in the history of Doctor Who is the Loch Ness Monster from "Terror of the Zygons."
The dinosaurs from "Invasion of the Dinosaurs" come in a clase second.
But that's just my opinion. If you think that the tank is the worst special effect in the history of Doctor Who, that's fine with me. I'm just stating my personal opinion.
In another scene in Robot the giant robot is supposed to grab Sarah Jane in its claw. They didn't have an actual size giant robot, so they filmed the normal-sized robot on a green-screen and used a Barbie doll as Sarah Jane!
I didnt get the thing when you said a wobbly moment and the first one was a dissapointment. I dont think it shoulda been first. But I love that thing with mickeys nan
the onlly part of the "Bloopers" was where the 2 guys collide with the wall-Caption reads *Watch top of the wall* theres not even enough footage of top of that wall to watch for the mistake, What happened at top of Wobbley Wall?
Stop picking holes in old episodes. They just did not have the technology. Ok smarty pants, without the use of new special effects or CGI how DO you show an alien infection on someone's arm? Anyway... Bubble wrap is AWESOME!
I actually thought some of the 10-6 entries were worse than some of those in the top five, though I definitely agree with your number one choice. Now excuse me while I crawl under my bed to hide from the killer bubble-wrap aliens
They did pretty well considering the technology and funds available to them at the time, cept for the Gran's glasses one, that would have been a production error. I love Doctor Who, but this is still VERY funny! Mind you, I wouldn't have placed the tank at no. 1. Great vid none the less!
Also, there were scenes in the first Dalek serial where the Daleks werre far more cardboard-cutout-y than the Power of the Daleks scene you have here. Not that I didn't enjoy the video!
"Nothing in the world can stop me now!" Oh, screenwriters in those days...
A worse shooting I do not know, but how about the stabbing of Arbitan at the end of the first episode of Keys of Marinus? It has become my personal favorite on-screen death ever just because of how absurdly bad it was. Of course, that's really the acting more than the effects... Keys of Marinus also has some model work that, if I remember correctly, was even worse than what you have here. XD I love this show!
I enjoyed that, some very bad effects back in the golden days. I would suggest also Leisure Hive for crap effects and certainly the Keeper of Traken - Trakens SFX are awfull and my favorite part is the end when the master opens and closes his Tardis door and the grandfather clock falls back slightly and he holds onto it before taking Tremas's body. Interestingly there are many fan made special FX for Traken and they are excellent. I hope someone remasters the old series some day.
Bubblewrap was so new in 1975 that none of us watching could make the connection. The actor's conviction makes it work (you may notice that the grub is made of it as well, and the Alta costumes in Blakes 7)
number 4 isn't even a speial effect and you were probably too lazy to slow down the footage at 5 so we could see it wobble. Thanks for picking on the ebst show ever, no one cares about the bad SFX but you just pointed it out so now we can't not notice and he underwater menace one wasn't that bad at all
I remember when I first saw Robot I thought that tank was the worst effect ever. But bad special effects were always part of the show's charm. At least they made up for it with good scripts and strong characters. If you remember from the classic series, the effects got much better during the Colin Baker series and into the Sylvester McCoy years. Not surprisingly, that is when the scripts began looking like they came out of the toilet.
@MFPhoto1 Funny though it may be. it's almost a pity the Robot tank gets singled out for attention because it takes away from some of the ambitious things they tried with OB video and CSO in that story that actually come off. In some scenes, there are three layers of video overlay, but you don't notice because of how well it's stitched together.
Erm n umber 5 I didnt see anything? What am I looking for?
Thanks for that, well put together, and dont worry about doing suspense, I just fast forwarded as soon as I saw it halted lol
Also Id like to nominate a story which did actually involve giant fly type creatures, it was in the first series of Doc Who back in 63 but I can't think of the name of it, you left that out, those flies were atracious, they were polystyrne or wood or spometihng and u could hear them creaking.
Obviously, these scenes represent the worst from the episodes you've seen... there are so many more instances from the original series that are worse or just as bad.
And the crew reflection in the sunglasses was not bad FX, but a goof.
-A few Tom Baker episodes where they show someone's possessed by having their eyes glow red...by sticking fake "eyes" over their closed eyelids. I think they did this in both "The Planet of Evil" and "The Keeper of Traken".
-My all-time favorite, from "The Claws of Axos": a blob that is just a midget under a painted sheet. Even blue screening in Jello, the way they made a frog "grow" earlier in the story, would have been less cheesy.
To me the worst monster effect was with John Pertwee. I forgot the name of the episode but it had a dinosaur that got unfrozen and was romping around England. You could tell right away it was a hand puppet.
Another really bad special effect was with Tom Baker (his side kick was Romana). Tom supposidly had his arms and legs torn apart. You could tell Tom was sticking his head out of a black curtain and a really small doll body was placed under his chin.
in destiny of the daleks, the daleks start killing people, its the worst dying ever! one woman actualy look sideways and nods before squationg down and rolling over, cool vid!
@Rjstudios100 Also in Warriors of the Deep there's a bunch of people that get electrocuted by the Myrka and they sort, get down rather than fall over.
ehmmm... not all of these were bad special effects, and you didn't really take any of the really bad ones. I think your top 10 was much better than your number 1. and from the same episode as your number 1 there are "a hundred" worse special effects than the one you actually picked.. sorry, but you'll have to come up with a better list I think!
I think Paradise Towers had the worst special effects ever. Using a couple of neon lights to portray the monster. You could have used a couple of garbage bags and stuck some odd bits on it and it would have looked better.
@fedokosmokrator Great list. I assume you must be a Doctor Who fan ;D. Where do you find out how they made these special effects or did you just observe and said what you think they look like?
@DYLANDISASTERbz Yes, I'm a huge Dr Who fan! The special effects are explained on the DVD documentaries and commentaries. The only one I guessed was the Vardans which I now understand aren't made of tin-foil...
@fedokosmokrator & the zarbi!!!!Horrid!!!& i think my # 1 would be the tom baker storey(i think...)With the sontorans, where their ships are golf balls on strings!!!
it was fun, i enjoyed that, we all know its budgit was low but we believed in everything and suspended it was wobbly, besides in 1975 bubble wrap was a new thing.
i loved it regardless, it was fun laughing with affection at its dodgy moments
@gusisgr The alien Vardans are clearly made out of tin-foil. I'm sure if that episode was made today, special effects would have improved enough to make it look a bit more convincing!
Everyone needs to remember these are very old shows. And British. I'm sorry, but British programs always had bad special effects even when special effects were bad. So they made up for it with good plots and storylines. Something our modern special effects have ruined.
In a way, I think the bad special effects were a big part of what what made the original series so good because the writers, directors and actors (especially the actors!) had to work a lot harder to make the viewer suspend their disbelief. And the result, ironically, was more believable. The new series is good sometimes, but mostly it's too caught up in sentimentalism and touchy-feely nonsense.
@barbarash Sorry you didn't like it. Please keep in mind though that I never said these were gaffes as in mistakes but poor special effects that could have been better. Thanks for your comment, I appreciate your opinion.
actually there are 2 other really bad shootings, one in tomb of the cybermen when the guy doesnt even aim at him when hes shot. and one in destiny of the daleks when the victims stands for 2 seconds after being shot
@dalektaliban Thanks, I'd never noticed the tomb of the cybermen one before but I'll look for it now. I did know about the Destiny of the Daleks one but I thought this one was funnier. Thanks for your comment!

the onlly part of the "Bloopers" was where the 2 guys collide with the wall-Caption reads *Watch top of the wall* theres not even enough footage of top of that wall to watch for the mistake, What happened at top of Wobbley Wall?

didn't see anything wrong with #5, #1 was shit
the alien from city of death is pure shit, the story sucks, and the title lies
LegendarySilverWolf 7 months ago
No. 6 is interesting because it was official policy in the 60s that only 3 Daleks could appears at any one time; to have 4 is extravagant
chewie211171 7 months ago
In fairness to the original producers, they did the best they could on a small TV budget.
chewie211171 7 months ago
I disagree with #10 - I never ever had a problem with that one

I keep rewinding and can't see a single problem with 5.

Stop picking holes in old episodes. They just did not have the technology. Ok smarty pants, without the use of new special effects or CGI how DO you show an alien infection on someone's arm? Anyway... Bubble wrap is AWESOME!
20meerkat 9 months ago
What's the special effect in number 4???
MordaciousFilms 9 months ago
I bet the Brigadier's mam went round to see the giant robot's mam after that, lol.
Sadly ,Dr Who sometimes had the production values of a junior school panto
Zipgunn1 9 months ago
In all fairness, was bubble wrap particularly well-known to the general public in 1975? I was a kid back then and don't remember. :-)
histrion2 9 months ago
I actually thought some of the 10-6 entries were worse than some of those in the top five, though I definitely agree with your number one choice. Now excuse me while I crawl under my bed to hide from the killer bubble-wrap aliens
bigbenkentucky2 9 months ago
They did pretty well considering the technology and funds available to them at the time, cept for the Gran's glasses one, that would have been a production error. I love Doctor Who, but this is still VERY funny! Mind you, I wouldn't have placed the tank at no. 1. Great vid none the less!

Also, there were scenes in the first Dalek serial where the Daleks werre far more cardboard-cutout-y than the Power of the Daleks scene you have here. Not that I didn't enjoy the video!
DragonSporks 10 months ago
"Nothing in the world can stop me now!" Oh, screenwriters in those days...
A worse shooting I do not know, but how about the stabbing of Arbitan at the end of the first episode of Keys of Marinus? It has become my personal favorite on-screen death ever just because of how absurdly bad it was. Of course, that's really the acting more than the effects... Keys of Marinus also has some model work that, if I remember correctly, was even worse than what you have here. XD I love this show!
DragonSporks 10 months ago
I enjoyed that, some very bad effects back in the golden days. I would suggest also Leisure Hive for crap effects and certainly the Keeper of Traken - Trakens SFX are awfull and my favorite part is the end when the master opens and closes his Tardis door and the grandfather clock falls back slightly and he holds onto it before taking Tremas's body. Interestingly there are many fan made special FX for Traken and they are excellent. I hope someone remasters the old series some day.
TheF126 10 months ago
Haha, number one just *had* to be That Tank, it's notorious. Terrance Dicks had so much fun teasing Barry Letts about it in the Robot commentary. :)
I'm surprised the atrocious dinosaurs didn't make an appearance on the list though.
EalaDubh 10 months ago
Bubblewrap was so new in 1975 that none of us watching could make the connection. The actor's conviction makes it work (you may notice that the grub is made of it as well, and the Alta costumes in Blakes 7)
IshmaelSkyes 10 months ago
number 4 isn't even a speial effect and you were probably too lazy to slow down the footage at 5 so we could see it wobble. Thanks for picking on the ebst show ever, no one cares about the bad SFX but you just pointed it out so now we can't not notice and he underwater menace one wasn't that bad at all
Smallvillenerd 11 months ago
I remember when I first saw Robot I thought that tank was the worst effect ever. But bad special effects were always part of the show's charm. At least they made up for it with good scripts and strong characters. If you remember from the classic series, the effects got much better during the Colin Baker series and into the Sylvester McCoy years. Not surprisingly, that is when the scripts began looking like they came out of the toilet.
MFPhoto1 11 months ago
@MFPhoto1 Funny though it may be. it's almost a pity the Robot tank gets singled out for attention because it takes away from some of the ambitious things they tried with OB video and CSO in that story that actually come off. In some scenes, there are three layers of video overlay, but you don't notice because of how well it's stitched together.
EalaDubh 10 months ago
Erm n umber 5 I didnt see anything? What am I looking for?
Thanks for that, well put together, and dont worry about doing suspense, I just fast forwarded as soon as I saw it halted lol
Also Id like to nominate a story which did actually involve giant fly type creatures, it was in the first series of Doc Who back in 63 but I can't think of the name of it, you left that out, those flies were atracious, they were polystyrne or wood or spometihng and u could hear them creaking.
bluejeckett 11 months ago
If you did this kind of a vid for the new series it would have to be called Top Million Worst Special Effects.
LegoDaleks 11 months ago
Obviously, these scenes represent the worst from the episodes you've seen... there are so many more instances from the original series that are worse or just as bad.
And the crew reflection in the sunglasses was not bad FX, but a goof.
rnigma 1 year ago
You missed a couple of "great" ones:
-A few Tom Baker episodes where they show someone's possessed by having their eyes glow red...by sticking fake "eyes" over their closed eyelids. I think they did this in both "The Planet of Evil" and "The Keeper of Traken".
-My all-time favorite, from "The Claws of Axos": a blob that is just a midget under a painted sheet. Even blue screening in Jello, the way they made a frog "grow" earlier in the story, would have been less cheesy.
TheFavorista 1 year ago
lol number 10 i watch the ark in space in low qality so it actuly looked ok
xo990 1 year ago
To me the worst monster effect was with John Pertwee. I forgot the name of the episode but it had a dinosaur that got unfrozen and was romping around England. You could tell right away it was a hand puppet.
Another really bad special effect was with Tom Baker (his side kick was Romana). Tom supposidly had his arms and legs torn apart. You could tell Tom was sticking his head out of a black curtain and a really small doll body was placed under his chin.
Thanks for the memories.
TheJokerzGirl 1 year ago
No 3 wasn't tin foil.
It was a reflective plastic sheet filmed on a blue (Or a white wall maybe) screen then supper imposed onto the set like a ghost effect.

@Rjstudios100 Also in Warriors of the Deep there's a bunch of people that get electrocuted by the Myrka and they sort, get down rather than fall over.
Yetaxa 1 year ago
ehmmm... not all of these were bad special effects, and you didn't really take any of the really bad ones. I think your top 10 was much better than your number 1. and from the same episode as your number 1 there are "a hundred" worse special effects than the one you actually picked.. sorry, but you'll have to come up with a better list I think!

Yeah, echoing the other comments, the audio is in desperate need of adjustment and #4 is not a special effect.
SolCross 1 year ago
I think Paradise Towers had the worst special effects ever. Using a couple of neon lights to portray the monster. You could have used a couple of garbage bags and stuck some odd bits on it and it would have looked better.

@DYLANDISASTERbz Yes, I'm a huge Dr Who fan! The special effects are explained on the DVD documentaries and commentaries. The only one I guessed was the Vardans which I now understand aren't made of tin-foil...

I had one of those toy tanks seen in #1 (an Action Man Scorpion tank).

Reflections in sunglasses are a production blunder, NOT a special effect.

why is number 3 a bad special effect
gusisgr 1 year ago
@gusisgr The alien Vardans are clearly made out of tin-foil. I'm sure if that episode was made today, special effects would have improved enough to make it look a bit more convincing!
fedokosmokrator 1 year ago
Everyone needs to remember these are very old shows. And British. I'm sorry, but British programs always had bad special effects even when special effects were bad. So they made up for it with good plots and storylines. Something our modern special effects have ruined.

In a way, I think the bad special effects were a big part of what what made the original series so good because the writers, directors and actors (especially the actors!) had to work a lot harder to make the viewer suspend their disbelief. And the result, ironically, was more believable. The new series is good sometimes, but mostly it's too caught up in sentimentalism and touchy-feely nonsense.
TheDedPengwyn 1 year ago
Not to nit-pick but about number 4 --- Crew reflections aren't technically a special effects gaff.
