Little Richard really could Rip It Up. But here in front of all these white seated middle-class handclappers he's holding back. The saxes are good though. I saw him at the Liverpool Empire on the same bill as The Beatles in 1962. He played the piano with his feet, jumped on to it, then fell off it. He lay motionless on the stage, we gasped, then his body arched and he sprang on to his feet. Just so amazing. Yes I screamed! We all did. The Beatles were good too. ;-)
He's obviously not allowed to "Rip it up" It's like he wasn't allowed to dance!?!?!?!? This is before he wore make-up and permed his hair. He truley does not look like he is loose and enjoying himself!?!?!? All white audience, all white band!?!?!?!? Except for Little Richards music the past SUCKED!
@bmoliveras This was Richard's comeback after the stint as a minister - and, of course, black audiences had turned their back on him and the early rockers by this time.
I just watched a video of Richard Penniman when he was about six years old and he was playing the piano in a movie he is the most amazing piano player I have ever seen! And at six years old!!
I was a 12 year old white boy in Alabama eating a hamburger when some big kids came in and played "Rip it up" on the juke box.
My life instantly changed. I've been a musician since that day in the 1950's. Racism goes out the window when Rock-n- Roll comes in.
