This video really fails to explain just what Personas are other than "let's make our browser look pretty!" I'm a Firefox user, but it's sad when you have to resort to reading YouTube comments to actually understand just what the hell this thing is.

agreed... from teh video it looks like some fucking picture that goes in the background... google chrome did this first i belive... from what i see its just a picture that gets cut off in the browser page area but is visible only in the browser window (above and below webpage area)... i have no idea of what it is other than that... a background (window?) pictury kind of theme...

Personas are simplistic copouts compared to a well-executed theme. Yeah, anyone and their mother can make one in seconds... and it shows.

@nuclearcollision Actually, because (comprehensive) themes are difficult to make, most themes feel tacky and poorly-executed. Personas are a way for artists, rather than programmers, to make themes that, you know... look GOOD.

New programming languages and tools have made it piss-easy to make programs and games. Result: lots of really crap programs. However, a lot of extremely high-quality applications are available as well. D'you prefer the time when computers could do F-A useful to you, or now?

But I don't really see how new programming tools that make app-writing accessible to just about anyone has anything to do with my original point that no persona can match a good theme. You're free to use them, and I can say they look cheap. That's all there is to it.

@nuclearcollision Because a good theme was difficult to make - as I said before. It required a pretty extensive knowledge of XUL, which lets face it, most artists and designers aren't interested in. XUL themes were often incomplete, e.g. omitting certain icons, and that made them feel cheap or badly made. Additionally, there just weren't that many of them - and, unlike you infer, a lot of them were also bad.

@nuclearcollision Personas have made Firefox theming accessible to a wider audience: instead of having to understand XUL, you simply need to be able to create an attractive image. This means that there are now more personas then there ever were XUL themes. Are there going to be bad ones? Yes, of course, but I challenge that the number off good themes far outsets the number of good XUL themes.

Ok, so Personas is like Themes.

I like Firefox because it gets the job done. What I don't like is the new direction you folks are taking with this commercial. It looks fake and sounds fake. It looks like something Microsoft or google might do to invite and trap unsuspecting customers.

Firefox is cool with me as long as it stays Firefox. Honest, down to earth.

I would hate to see awesome software like this turn into junk like IE.
